‘The X Factor’ winner Matt Terry fails to clinch UK Number One single

But he is still in the hunt for the battle for the Christmas chart topper

The X Factor winner Matt Terry‘s Christmas single has charted at Number Three in the Official UK singles chart.

‘When Christmas Comes Around’, which was written by Ed Sheeran, reached the top three after being made available to buy and stream for five days rather than the usual seven.

Nine of the 12 previous UK X Factor winners have gone straight in at Number One.

Clean Bandit remain at the summit for a sixth week with ‘Rockabye’, while One Direction star Louis Tomlinson’s collaboration with Steve Aoki, ‘Just Hold On’, went straight in at Number Two.

Terry still remains in the hunt for Christmas Number One but he faces stiff competition from the tribute single to murdered Labour MP Jo Cox.

The recording will see sales of the single raise money for a charity set up in Mrs Cox’s name.

The Stones have waived royalties from sales of the Christmas single.

Bookmakers William Hill also said it would donate any money staked on the single reaching the Christmas Number One slot, to charity.

West Yorkshire MP Ms Cox was murdered in her Birstall constituency on June 16.

Thomas Mair was jailed for life recently after being found guilty of her murder.

At time of her death a host of musicians came out and paid tribute to the late Labour MP, with Coldplay dedicating ‘Green Eyes’ in her memory.
