For the years when it was the only cover widely marketed most people considered Jeff Buckley's version definitive. That's no longer true. Today, it's just as often panned as it is praised. It's just one of numerous versions that each has its own following. Thanks to the internet, John Cale's version which created the pattern for Buckley and others is now getting better known. And, in the past five or so years dozens of new versions, with collectively a much larger audience than any single version, now make up the Hallelujah chorus.
