Smiths man leads tributes to late Manchester music legend

Johnny Roadhouse passed away on Saturday (April 11) aged 88

I spent many hours in the Johnny Roadhouse Music store. I was at university in Manchester in the early 90s and still pursuing dreams of playing in a band. When my first guitar was nicked in a break-in in Whitworth Park halls I got a new one from Johnny Roadhouse – a cream Squire Tele with rosewood fretboard. In a desperate act of devotion I wanted the same colour combination Hendrix used. I got my Marshall JCM 800 amp and Laney 2X12 cab from there, not to mention countless sets of Ernie Ball strings (as used by Slash) and plectrums. More important than any of that stuff I got a beaten up old solid-top f-hole acoustic with a super-high action that is still the best slide guitar I've ever owned. The staff at Johnny Roadhouse were always friendly – there was none of the sneering you get at most guitar stores – and it had the kind of labyrinthine, jumbled interior that made browsing such an emotional experience. It was a guitar womb. Though I don't play much nowadays (I leave that to the professionals) I still find myself gravitating to guitar shops, especially when I'm in a new city. All those shops browsed and I've never found anywhere quite as good as Johnny Roadhouse. For me, it was the very best guitar shop in the world. Thank you Johnny Roadhouse. RIP

Jarvis Cocker and Beth Ditto joint single out today

Duo's cover of Heaven 17's 'Temptation' gets official release

Mon 18 Feb, 2008

Nonesense, this track rocks, otherwise I'd never have put it out. What makes it so great is how *heavy* Jarvis made the whole thing. When he told me what he was going to cover I was a little freaked - sounded like it was going to be very pop. But from the first 'whump!' of those moody drums we knew we were on to a winner. Beth's got one of the greatest voices in alternative music and this is a dynamite performance. I've been lucky enough to have this on my iPod for the last year and I still go back to it. Everyone who hears does the "Woah!"-thing. Well worth a download, and you'll be helping some people in some desparate circumstances who don't have the quality of housing most of us enjoy.

The Verve comeback shows: the fans' verdict

The people pass judgement on the band's live return

Mon 05 Nov, 2007

Despite loving their early stuff and burrowing deep into the belly of Britpop I never saw The Verve live. I was too busy obsessing over Blur and Pulp. But now... now I can already feel the hairs on the back of my neck twitch at the thought of them arriving on stage at the end of this week in London. Can't wait.

Radiohead sign 'conventional' record deal

XL Recordings will release 'In Rainbows' on CD

Wed 31 Oct, 2007

Well, they finally did it. This has been rumoured for months but actually getting the announcement is still a bit of a shock. Radiohead, one of the biggest bands in the world, releasing an album on a relatively small indie label. It's weird but it's brilliant. Feels like a meeting of minds. - The Ed.

What a way to start the week! Like most of you I imagine, I'm a *massive* Radiohead fan. In the world of music news this is apocalyptic news. We'll be spending the rest of the day on the phone and online working to to get the very latest info and inside story. But we'll also be counting down just like all the other fans. Awesome. Radiohead lead the pack again.

Courtney Love slams 'untrue' Winehouse drug comments

Hole singer denies talking about soul star's plight

I've only properly met Courtney the once but one of the things I was struck by is a strong sense of, I suppose you'd call it, honour. Yes, she can be utterly random, but she also seems to have a strong sense of fairness and feels hurt very keenly. It's why she's wary about inflicting it on others. But God help you if you inflict it on her.
