Radiohead open with 'Creep' at Reading Festival 2009

Thom Yorke and co wrap up this year's event with a surprise

Sun 30 Aug, 2009

I turned up cynical (after being bored senseless at Glasto a few years back, when SFA on the Other Stage was obviously the much better proposition), and left awestruck. Creep was a masterstroke, but the mix of songs from their 7 albums was properly career-spanning. Sure, there was the disappointment of a few songs not getting played (I'd've liked No Surprises, Stop Whispering and Thinking About You, but you can't have everything, right?), but this was pretty much everything you could've hoped for from a festival headliner.

Kings Of Leon slam Reading Festival crowd after headline show

Nathan Followill calls fans 'frozen'

Ignoring the north v. south shite for a moment (If you all love the north so much, by the way, why were there so many Northerners at Reading...? Oh, wait, 'cos it's the original, and your festival's a franchise... ;) ), let's look at the evidence:Radiohead -- I've seen them put in dull, drab, static sets, but they kicked arse at Reading. Marmaduke Duke, directly up against KOL, rocked so loud and hard that my ears rang for hours later, and the crowd there was most definitely not 'frozen'.So, maybe KOL aren't a main stage headline band? The people who said that when they headlined Glasto last year must be pissing themselves laughing now.

Reading Festival bosses ask to increase event's capacity

Reading Borough Council due to vote on new plans today (Jul 24)

Fri 24 Jul, 2009

Surely they'll just expand the site. And yeah, whilst Reading is a very compact festival within the arena (compared to, say, V Festival or Glastonbury), I've never found the compactness of the festival to be a problem, and have never got "stuck" in crowds. You just need to know how to handle a crowd. *shrugs*

Blur to play Manchester gig – exclusive

Band confirm new 'first gig' of reformation shows

Tue 10 Feb, 2009

"Why play the MEN in the middle of summer?" -- because they want to do a warm up gig a couple of days before their Glasto appearance (hint: the MEN gig is on the Friday, so they'll be headlinining the Sunday main stage at Glasto). And they probably didn't want to do a huuuuge open air gig, whereas an arena gig like the MEN is just right to get warmed up for a main stage headline.

'Last Night I Saved Her From Vampires' will be sold on the jaunt

Wed 24 Sep, 2008

I'm confused - unless there's more than one Amersham Arms in London than the obvious one (New Cross), this means that they're playing at a Jazz Jam night... Hmmm. None of these dates are on the bands' own website yet, either. The "Astoria 2" gig is actually a Push! club night, so probably a shortened set. (Moan, moan, moan).Still, this is the best new band in British rock I'm talking about, I'm allowed to moan a little bit about the South East being short changed (where's the Reading/Oxford gig? :) ).

Ahhhh, the comedy of it all -- I downloaded "Back In Black" from a dodgy Russian MP3 site because I wanted it as the ringtone on my phone. I'm even tempted to go see them when they do their UK gigs sometime next year. But I shan't be buying any of their "physical" albums, because, as a number of artists have recently argued, albums are increasingly irrelevant in the 21st century. ("Discuss. 25 marks.")

Razorlight announce UK tour

Johnny Borrell and co hit the road this November

Fri 26 Sep, 2008

Thing about Razorlight is that they're one of the few bands I've ever known inspire people to SHIT into a plastic bottle at a festival. Bottles of piss, yes, everyone's done that. But shit? That takes a new level of hatred.

Thing I'll never forget about 50 Cent is the bottling he got at Reading Festival a few years back. (Kudos to the guy who made his way down the front with a camping chair to try to throw that at 50 Cent, too. ;) ).

There's already a secret "tax" on blank CDs, in that CD manufacturers give a cut of the money from CD sales to the major record companies. I can't remember where I heard this conspiracy theory, but it was probably on the internet or something, so it must be true. :-D

Radiohead hit back at claims UK tour is too expensive

Nearly £50 a ticket will ensure 'quality' say band's management

Fri 28 Dec, 2007

Comments (2)

Muse put on two "quality shows" at Wembley Stadium last year. £37.50 a ticket got you the first proper rock shows at the new stadium, three support bands each day, Zane Lowe DJing, pyrotechnics, giant special effect satellite dishes around and on the stage, trapeze artists over the crowd, their trademark giant balloons, and a kick-arse set each night. I reckon a fiver is probably the standard inflationary increase from a gig of that price last year to this coming summer. So, Radiohead had better _really_ lay it on for the money.
