Noel Gallagher quits Oasis after Paris 'altercation'

Guitarist walks after gig cancellation

Fri 28 Aug, 2009

Comments (1)

Oasis were one of the most important bands in the mid-1990s, and they soundtracked a particular place and time in my life and many other people's. the first two albums are stone cold classics and deserve their place in history. For that I am extremely grateful and they deserve respect. However, they have been on a steady decline since Be Here Now (funnily enough, the album of their career that saw them get the worst reviews was Morning Glory. FACT. Even though it was and is a brilliant album). I have to say that Liam Gallagher's anti-intellectual stance is absolutely nothing to do with being working class and symptomatic of a massive inferiority complex and a chip on his shoulder. There are plenty of working class Mancunians who did have a brain and read - ever heard of Steven Morrissey?

Paul McCartney makes MPs expenses protest

Former Beatle refrained from voting in European Parliament elections

Wed 10 Jun, 2009

Comments (1)

the problem is that the right to vote has been really hard fought for, and to not vote (as opposed to spoiling your vote) is frankly unhelpful. It's the only chance people get to participate in a democracy. The BNP are not about democracy, their views are anything but democratic. With freedom comes responsibility. It's about time TOMQ84 was thrown off this board. If enough of us object about his (I'm assuming) comments, hopefully he should be banned.

Pete Doherty releases anti-BNP message - video

Babyshambles man speaks at Love Music Hate Racism festival

Thu 04 Jun, 2009

Comments (2)

Irrespective of whether you like Pete Doherty's music, thank God that there are people who are prepared to take a stand against the evils of racism. The BNP are nothing less than a very eveil bunch of dangerous thugs and to ignore them and to hope that they go away is naive and risky. There is no excuse for the behaviour towards another human being that he describes in the clip. Racists are not demonstrating freedom of speech - they are making the countries in which they live dangerous people. Britain has always been a melting pot -and thank God it is! Anyone who thinks this is a bad thing is paying lip service to the likes of Hitler and any other figure at any time in history or the present who thinks it's acceptable to scapegoat certain groups. As one half of a mixed-race marriage, I am offended that there are people who think it's acceptable to make racist comments on here. NME has always made it very clear where it stands on the issue of racism; it was reading NME that inspired me to join the Anti-Nazi League over fifteen years ago.

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters could repeat Berlin Wall gig in Israel

Star wants West Bank wall/fence taken down

Wed 03 Jun, 2009

Comments (2)

Waters has been to Israel. I spent five months there in 1995-6 and went back in 1998 for two weeks. The Israeli treatment of the Palestinians is appalling, and on every occasion on leaving Israel I was actually asked 'Have you spoken with any Arabs?' When I said yes, I nearly got strip-searched. There are many people working for peace there, from many backgrounds. But what is going on in Israel, which I have seen for myself first-hand is nothing less than Apartheid being carried out by the Israeli government and absolutely nothing on earth can justify this. The heavy-handed security checks carried out by many countries now are nothing compared to what the Israelis were doing fifteen years ago. The national airline, El-Al make everyone feel like a terrorist. There are two peoples on quest for a homeland, and unacceptable actions carried out by both sides. Like I say, I have been there and seen it for myself, and have studied the history not just of the last sixty years but the last 3,000 years.

Bonehead: 'Oasis should have quit after Knebworth'

Departed guitarist speaks about band's legacy

Tue 02 Jun, 2009

Comments (4)

In many ways, I have to agree. Those first two albums were amazing, unfortunately Oasis long ago descended into self-parody. So unfortunately have many of their fans - some of the folk who post on here seem to applaud the Gallagher brothers' every word, even when it's non-sensical. And people also need to learn the difference between 'still sell lots of tickets and records' and 'still actually being any good.'

Didn't read the interview, but what he's saying here does not seem to be slagging Oasis off. What I understand Tom Clarke to be saying is that Noel doesn't need to be playing in the band for money, but that he keeps on doing it for the love of it, and that would be his dream, too.

Blur set to release new compilation

Double CD spans band's 'Midlife'

Wed 20 May, 2009

Comments (1)

It is a great tracklisting, hit singles mixed in with some key album tracks like 'Strange news' 'Advert' and 'Battery.' It's got Popscene on it, marking the first release in the UK for that track since 1992, meaning that it changes for quite a lot even now. And finally, what is also good, is that it is not simply 2000's the Best Of Blur with one or two singles tacked on. Good stuff.

Coldplay give away live album beginning today (May 15)

You can download it now

Fri 15 May, 2009

Comments (1)

Coldplay’s free download live album starts with the sound of the band bragging about their drug-fuelled orgies moments before they stagger onstage, the dwarve drug runners, the nymphos and the goat they sacrified to Satan, which from the sound of it they’re still covered in. It finished with them doing a thirty-second thrash metal version of ‘Yellow’ and the band collapsing into the drum-kit, as it ends in a shower of white noise and terrifying feedback not heard since Suicide’s ‘23 Minutes Over Brussels.’Of course it doesn’t, stupid. Lily Allen: 'I'll still vote for Gordon Brown'

Fri 15 May, 2009

Comments (1)

Geo91 -agreed. We need people who can do the job. As a 32 year old who remembers what it was like under 18 years of the Tories, anyone who thinks that things will be better under them is deluding themselves quite spectacularly. Would be good to see NME get a little more political again, there was a time when you would get politicians on the cover - I can remember Neil Kinnock, Tony Blair (the famous 1998 'Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?' cover), Ken Livingston, focus on the treatment of New Age Travellers, 2001's Riot issue...for some of us, NME was as much a political education as it was a musical education. It would be great to see those days again...

Not coonvinced at all. As someone who runs a small record label, I know that I have to accept some people will download without buying, but they may also go and see shows, or buy the music later on. In the early 90s, I recorded a lot of music, that I subsequently bought on vinyl or CD, in some cases both! the major labels will do anythin g to keep their heads in the sand like ostriches. Whatever people think of Coldplay, their releasing an album as a free download is quite a bold step for a successful band still signed to a major.

Pulp, Elastica, Supergrass for 'Common People' Britpop compilation

Wed 29 Apr, 2009

No Oasis or Blur? Mind you, you still don't see Beatles or Stones tracks on sixties compilations, and I've never seen The Clash on a punk compilation. Some great tracks, some utter rubbish and some nice surprises (Spearmint, Lodger, Geneva). I wonder what Luke Haines makes of an Auteurs' track being included on here, given how scathing he was (and is) about Britpop.

Jarvis Cocker: 'I don't support them but a Conservative government is necessary'

Former Pulp man says Labour's era is over

Tue 28 Apr, 2009

Comments (1)

Jarvis in 1997 as a twenty year old I campaigned around my university campus to get labour elected. Betrayed as I have felt subsequently (tuition fees, Iraq, a so-called minimum wage that is still uneven), I have been living in Scotland since 2001. I feel as strongly now in 200 as I did in 1997 that I could never bring myself to vote for the Conservatives. I have seen first-hand the damage that the Tories have done. I have worked as a teacher in some of the most deprived areas and seen how communities were ripped to shreds as the infrastructure centered around local industries collapsed. I've spent six weeks in an elite private school where I had to cut privelged little sods down to size for snobby remarks. We are still paying for the 1980s abomination of Thatcher. As for you, with your working class northerner persona, how can you square the world depicted in your lyrics with wishing a Tory government on Britain? We never expected any better from Phil Collins. But we did expect better from you.

Oasis' Noel Gallagher: 'I'm average at guitar'

Noel says he's not that great – and Paul Weller agrees

Tue 27 Jan, 2009

Comments (1)

Do you need to be an amazing guitarist to write great tunes? Steve Vai is a technically brilliant guitarist but as about as much soul as Simon Cowell. There is a difference between being technically good and being able to write good tunes. The Sex Pistols weren't amazing musicians - though better than they made out - but produced great records. Sometimes Noel can be egotistical, here I think he's being modest. sure he's written some dross, but nothing can take away from Supersonic and the Hindu Times, for example (even if I like other bands more).

The Boxer Rebellion 'outselling Kings Of Leon, Coldplay on iTunes'

Fri 16 Jan, 2009

Not particularly a fan, but good on 'em for doing so. And if digital only tracks can be eligible, why not digital only albums? As someone who runs an admittedly tiny record label -and spent the last few days walking into shops with boxes of 7"s, i think there is definitely a return to DIY happening, be it through bands putting out their own digital releases, blogs etc.. May it flourish.

Plus guitarist pays tribute to Ryan Adams

Fri 28 Nov, 2008

Comments (2)

Good God, Noel, yes you have made two decent albums and some good singles but you are becoming a nostalgia act. I'm not an Oasis hater, iether, but every single time a new Oasis album comes out, it's the same old story. Two very egotistical brothers. Face it, Andy Bell the bass player produced far better albums as a member of Ride.

I have never heard Trick trick's music and I don't want to. I am very enocuraged by the comments condemning this homophobic idiot. Homophobia is not acceptable and has to be challenged. As a secondary school teacher I have torn shreds off people for making homophobic and racist remarks. People like Trick Trick have no right to a platform. With freedom -in this case , speech - comes responsibility, not to say stuff that is gratuitously offensive. Most, if not all homophobes are people who think they are gay and are too afraid to come out. The US has an African-American president, and it seems much is possible now. Let's challenge this homophobic arsehole.

Well done The Cure and well done NME! The Cure are without a doubt one of the most important bands of the post-punk era and it's great that, after a period of time when something approximating stalinist revisionism attempted to see them swept away from the pages of the printed media that they are finally getting the recognition they deserve. Unless they are really, really hard up for money, I'd actually rather they didn't reform and instead preserved the mystique. However, some reformations have worked - saw Blondie live and they were brilliant, and Television were amazing, as were The Pixies (all of whom I saw once they reformed). Maybe instead of doing it for the money, if they really are reforming, how about doing it for - gosh shock horror - the music.

Glasvegas announce Christmas tour

Winter jaunt will follow September's sold-out tour

Mon 08 Sep, 2008

Saw them at Edinburgh Liquid Rooms last night and they were brilliant. tickets were changing hands for £50 on ebay, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. To all those sharpening the knives: believe the hype. Glasvegas ARE the real deal, and the album is one of the best this year (I review for an online magazine and I hve heard over 100 new releases this year).Ed

as a brit, it is blindingly obvious that who the American president is has an affect on the rest of the world. It is obvious to anyone with a brain that Barack Obama is the man to do the job, and that John McCain obviously isn't.Let's hope the Republicans don't get in again, and let's hope that here in Britain we finally get a party that represent the people. Some reformations work (see Jane's Addiction, Killing Joke) others don't. I would hope that they do convene and see how things work out. If they work, great, cannot wait to hear it. If they feel it doesn't work, then no. But I cannot help wondering, given how 'alternative' grew in success, whether they had stayed together in 1991 this might have produced more successful albums. Have seen them live twice since they reformed and rocked. Let's see how it works on record.

Isaac Hayes obituary - 1942-2008

A look back at the life of the 'Shaft' and 'South Park' man

Mon 11 Aug, 2008

Comments (1)

Rest in peace, Mr. Hayes. A true legend. And may I suggest that if you haven't heard Hot Buttered Soul, you do investigate. It's up there with Curtis Mayfield's Curtis, Stevie Wonder's Music Of My Mind/Talking Book/Innervisions Trilogy and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and Let's Get It On as one of the great soul LPs of the era, and indeed one of the great LPs anyway. With it's twelve minute version of 'Walk On By' and nineteen minute version of 'By the Time I Get To Phoenix' it is a staggeringly great album. A true pioneer.

Look forward to hearing this, the Cure are my favourite band ever, and there are so many artists who are indebted to them. Gutted, gutted, gutted. Now live in Scotland but was a regular visitor to this Berwick Street legend when I lived south.Surely there can be some way of it being saved? Would rather buy records from the likes of places like Sister Ray, Rough Trade, (and here in Scotland) Avalanche than HMV or Zavvi. There are those who will claim that downloads are doing the damage. I beg to differ. The people who shop at places like Sister Ray are people who will go all over to find their music, and it's far more likely that some stuff is being undercut elsewhere (supermarket chains are not helping either). Wish I had the cash to help. Sigh...

Tue 17 Jun, 2008

With regards to this and the Kiss story...this is the equivalent of people taping stuff in days gone by.CDS have been sold at vastly inflated prices which is why people have done this, They cannot afford to buy it (with the threat of a recession do you think this is going to get any better?some old albums are deleted and not even available on download services like eMusic or iTunes. I cannot find studio albums like Curve's Doppelganger, Wedding Present's Watusi, or the Darling Buds or Primitives albums (I'm 31!)Added to which, if people download the album, they might yet buy it when they have the money. I taped many albums and then bought them over time when I had money. (It's called a back catalogue).Weep no tears for the much of the music industry. Much of this is about money and greed and nothing to do with music at all. The people who do deserve sympathy are the small independent record shops and the music fans who cannot afford to compete with the high street maga chains. The internet makes the whole process fairer and more democratic.

I am fed-up with seeing people being scapegoated, There is no way this band can be held responsible. Depression is a horrible illness to have, and anyone who suffers from it needs help. Many emo-kids -or people who are perceived to be, are scapegoated and villified, simply because of the way they dress. It's time that the real root causes are addressed: was she being picked on at school? Were her family properly supportive? Time to investigate properly. Anyone who leaves poisonous threads or postings on here should be kicked off. I'm not into MCR particularly, but as a teacher i am sick to the back teeth of seeing people villified for daring to be different.

My Chemical Romance fans plan march against Daily Mail

Do not be fooled that they 'named and shamed' Stephen Lawrence's killers; that was nothing more than a PR stunt for the paper.By comparison, the MCR march may seem trivial, but the Daily Mail is symbolic of a wider malaise in society that must be stopped.I'm a teacher and I am horrified at the amount of vilification I see of emo-kids by the media and people using the media to their own foul ends.
