Chrispaz - take your point about the impact on British music, to a certain extent, but I think the Cure have had more of an impacty on 'alternative' music worldwide - the Cure blazed the trail for music from the sidelines to pack stadia, which is something that the Smiths and the Stone Roses never got to do. The Jam were indeed brilliant, but neitehr they nor The Stone Roses made much of an impact stateside, whereas The Cure did.Part of this is to do with slightly snobby notions of 'mystique' - the Smiths split after four albums, the Stone Roses after 2, whereas the Cure are still growing musically after thrity years. the Cure have impacted on bands as diverse as Fall Out Boy and Mogwai, and been covered by people as diverse as Bat For Lashes, Younger Younger 28s to Dinosaur Jr.

I'd love a proper Cure tour. The Cure have been my favourite band for 17 years, and at times that's led to me receiving a lot of snide comments about how they were has-beens, and people being quite patronising. And they do indeed play for three hours. The latest album is great! x

Well done The Cure and well done NME! The Cure are without a doubt one of the most important bands of the post-punk era and it's great that, after a period of time when something approximating stalinist revisionism attempted to see them swept away from the pages of the printed media that they are finally getting the recognition they deserve. They are easily as important as the Smiths, New Order, and U2, if not more so.
