It all comes down to the material. If it's there (as with the most recent U2 and, finally, REM's Accelerate), then you don't consider them a "classic" band, it's just another album in the canon. She's just wussing out. But if the material's not there (REM Around the Sun) you begin to get wistful for "the glory years".
