Roger Waters to play 'Dark Side Of The Moon' live in the UK

'Classic' having become a synonym for over-rated, dull and favoured by followers of critics. The cokeheaded Dark Side of the Moon was the mid-point of Floyd's descent into shallow tedium; The Wall completed the journey to its inane end. I'd recommend their first album wholeheartedly though. And if you must have hair-rock, Live at Pompeii would do at a pinch.

Government Committee recommend 'legitimising' ticket touts

New report says promoters should get a cut of re-sold tickets

Thu 10 Jan, 2008

Comments (1)

So the promoter's real agenda slips out. After spending the last year or so lobbying the government and conducting a media campaign that claims to be all about getting 'a fair deal for the fans', it turns out that this is really about getting a slice of any resale profits. I wonder if the government will consider such a mafia approach in other areas of business...

Resale of live event tickets slammed in government report

Sat 05 Jan, 2008

Comments (2)

This is absolute nonsense from people who know nothing about how touting actually works. Popular gigs have always sold out in minutes and that is largely due to the long-standing practise of ticketing agencies and promoters allowing the sale of large blocks of tickets to touts (often behind the scenes). One reason promoters allow this is to indemnify themselves. The reason the government have made this report is due to high power lobbying from a certain powerful promoter who is using this issue as a vehicle to create a completely controlled market (which is surely supposed to be the objection to institutionalised touting). This has absolutely nothing to do with fans getting a fair deal. Last time I checked, the free sale of goods (whether or not for profit) wasn't outlawed - it's supposed to be the basis of a healthy economy. Are even tickets no longer to be owned but licensed on limited terms?

Portishead doubt future of 'free music'

Trip hoppers also reveal more about their new album

Fri 12 Oct, 2007

Comments (1)

So he's not saying too much then really. Though it does highlight the fact that despite what you read on the internets, it is the artists themselves who are most put out by file-sharing and p2p has nothing to do with sticking it to the man and everything to do with hitching a free ride (not that I'm knocking that). It's quite rare to hear an artist actually come out with this in public as they usually prefer their labels to do their bad cop work - I'm guessing either Geoff didn't get that memo or he's figured out how badly that tactic is backfiring.

Radiohead new album: release 'In Rainbows' as download

Oof - what a stinker. I honestly thought I was listening to Coldplay or somesuch at first. And I do like Radiohead quite a lot. In fairness it's not all appalling but some of it is and the rest is bland and undistinguished. It's like a particularly weedy version of Thom Yorke's solo work. Such a shame - you just know that people will be saying that they had to give it away to avoid a flop. I don't want to think that. But I do.

Led Zeppelin reunion: promoter vows to take on touts

Harvey Goldsmith says eBay refuses to co-operate

Sat 06 Oct, 2007

Comments (1)

Last time I checked we were allowed to buy and sell our own property in this country. Harvey Goldsmith wants to make tickets some kind of special good and create an artificial market where he calls the shots. Anyone who has actually looked at ticket prices on ebay knows that they often go for less than face value and are mainly sold by people who can't go to a gig, which is absolutely fair. The people selling Led Zep tickets/codes were limited to 2 per person and can hardly be in business as touts on the back of this concert. You'll notice that Harvey Goldsmith only limits ticket numbers on gigs that will be sure sellouts. It is well known within the industry that real touts who buy blocks of tickets are a form of insurance for promoters which is why they are happily tolerated and are rumoured to have special arrangements with certain ticket agencies. The only people being targeted here are real fans and the odd opportunist who showed the temerity to tread on a powerful promoter's turf.
