Guitarist speaks out about the current state of the music industry
Sat 23 Jan, 2010
I remember reading an article that said 2009 was the best year for singles sales ever, which really makes a mockery of the idea that piracy is killing music.

Live music performances for 100 people or less will no longer need a licence under new plans
Thu 31 Dec, 2009
Oh great. That makes up for the draconian new plans to punish filesharers and the complete lack of any useful action against ticket touting.

But they haven't targeted it because of Cliff Richards, have they? They've blatantly done it because the DJ has made comments about soldiers in Iraq. Cliff Richards has fuck all to do with anything.

No, read it again. She's looking for a cleaner AND a PA who wants to work in the movie business. Not someone to do both.

Rob Harvey feels disillusioned by the digital revolution
Fri 05 Sep, 2008
It isn't downloading that has made indie music disposable, it's the existence of so many disposable bands - the Music being a prime example. Downloading has opened music up - it's not just the anoraks and the well-off that can listen to a wide range of music now - anyone with a PC and a modem can check out a new artist without having to spend £12 or more for the priveledge. Thousands of artists have benefitted the fact that listeners can now "try before they buy." If the Music are unhappy with their record sales, they need to look at the quality of their own output and the details of their recording contract.

Band suggest Gallagher is after publicity
Mon 18 Aug, 2008
It makes me laugh to see all the idiots on here taking one side or another... on a musical scale Kaiser Chiefs and Oasis are about as similar as its possible to be without being the same band. They both make derivative, plodding Britpop type shite. How could anyone like one and not the other?

Oh dear. What is it about Lily Allen that brings all the idiots out to the comment boards? How hilarious that EMI's greed has cost people their jobs. Ho ho ho!

Gene Simmonds says band won't release new songs until downloading stops
Tue 17 Jun, 2008
I love Kiss, but all that condom-free sex has clearly led to STDs that have addled Gene Simmons' brain. He is richer than God from all the Kiss merchanise available, but if he wants more money he should try getting a fair deal from the record company, not criticising fans. I would never have bought "Destroyer" if I hadn't gotten hooked on "Detroit Rock City" after illegally downloading it.

Are you listening to music illegally at work?
Tue 17 Jun, 2008
How ridiculous. The artists do not lose out in any way by having their songs played in workplaces and taxis. This is simply a money-grubbing initiative thought up by a greedy industry and if anything, it's made me even more keen to illegally download records and play them wherever the hell I want.

Poll reveals fans' downloading and copying habits
Tue 17 Jun, 2008
Only 96%? Presumably the other 4% don't have computers. People will still buy albums if they have sufficient incentive (if it's a favourite artist, a well reviewed album or an album with more than one hit on it), but they object to paying just for one song and I can understand that. As the music industry diversifies, it gets harder and harder to hear stuff by new bands in any specific genre. If I couldn't illegally download stuff by new artists to give it a try, I wouldn't have bought many of the albums I've bought in the last couple of years. It's not like we can rely on the radio or the music TV channels to play a good mix of new music (especially if you're not an indie or dance fan), so illegal downloading helps to expose people to new music. As for the artists, the problem here is not that illegal downloading is cutting their profits, but that they are given too small a slice of the pie in the first place due to unfair record label contracts.

Beatles' hometown tops new poll
Tue 17 Jun, 2008
Liverpool have the Beatles, but that's it. There's only been average indie nonsense from there since. I think the sad truth is that London probably has the biggest proportion of bands, simply because it's the biggest city.
