Fucked Up win Canadian version of the Mercury Prize

Band crowned Polaris Prize winners and scoop $20,000 prize

Wed 23 Sep, 2009

Comments (1)

Whoever labelled this band 'punk'. With quotes such as "Being nominated for the Polaris Prize is one of the most exciting things to have happened to our band, not only because of the prestige of the award" how can they possibly be called punk? Punk kicks against the establishment and does not try and court it. Just another band of corporate whores, I reckon.

Dizzee Rascal to release signature trainer this Friday (September 18)

Limited edition trainer only available through Nike's 1948 store in Shoreditch

Wed 16 Sep, 2009

Comments (1)

Am I the only person that finds this truly depressing? One of the brightest talents to emerge in Britain in years ends up flogging trainers. He's now more mainstream than joke re-hashers such as Peter Kay. Jim Davidson has more edge. Think about it. What's next? Plan B endorsing Mr Muscle as it can 'remove those stubborn bloodstains from the bath after your father has slashed his wrists in there. Buy some today'!

New NME editor named

Krissi Murison to be title's 11th editor

Wed 29 Jul, 2009

Comments (1)

Krissi, here is my advice, for what it's worth. People really do care about the paper, but I am afraid that the very sensible people who have written the comments above have hit the nail on the head. A radical overhaul is needed. I reckon that you should go out and find reporters who not only have their finger on the pulse of what is happening but also have a sense of history and a vision of the future, which will have the effect of putting their words into context. How about running a competition asking people to write in and review records or live bands etc - or even get themselves interviews with bands and show what they can do. A journalism qualification should count for nothing (or very little). Let's see what people can do. Then give the best of them a job! People should also be made to feel proud and privilidged to work for the paper again. The new Lester Bangs is out there somewhere. Go out and find her or him. Good luck.

Who will be nominated for this year's Mercury Prize?

Barclaycard Mercury Prize shortlist due to be announced tomorrow (July 21)

Mon 20 Jul, 2009

Comments (1)

Madness: The Liberty Of Norton Folgate. Anyone who thinks that album is not innovitive is listening to it without hearing it. Suggs' sleeve notes are better than most of the albums out in the last year! Somehow I doubt they'll even get nominated. Depressingly enough, I reckon the winner will be in that NME list.

Gutted. Mick Harvey has been the glue that binds the band together - both as a musician and via his management duties. I'm sure the Bad Seeds will survive it but it's now like Clough without Taylor, Morecambe without Wise, one Chuckle Brother without the other Chuckle Brother......

Blur, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young for Glastonbury 2009?

The festival rumour mill grows

Fri 12 Dec, 2008

Saw Springsteen in Dublin in May for first time. What have I been doing in my life. He was absolutely incredible. I'd go to Glasto just to see him. Mind you, if the rumours are true then there'd be other stuff worth watching too. I think AC/DC will headline Download, though.

MP attacks Dido over IRA-connected lyrics

Singer told to 'clarify her position' after quoting folk song on new album

Mon 08 Dec, 2008

Comments (1)

Whilst I could never be described as a fan of Dido I do wonder why Gregory Campbell MP thinks she should explain her lyrics. I would like to remind him that we live in a country where freedom of speech is enshrined. She can say what she bloody well likes. She is not a democratically elected person holding a public office. Those people can also say what they think but members of the public would have a right to ask them to explain themselves if they said something that is unclear. In fact, I'd rather him explain why he was strongly in favour of the Iraq war, has never voted on the hunting issues and is against gay rights etc etc. That would be far more interesting to me than anything Dido produces.

The Specials reunite for 2009 tour

Coventry band set to hit the road next April

Tue 02 Dec, 2008

Comments (1)

Quite a welcome reunion as ska music never dates and the economic downturn that gave birth to many of their great tunes will be back with a vengance by the time they go on tour!! I've a feeling that some of these venues might not be big enough, though. Mind you, it'll make for a great night.

animal_machine, do you actually know what the song Born In The USA is about? I've got a feeling that you've got it completely wrong. Download the lyrics, study them and then make your mind up. I've got a small idea that you think it is some bombastic pro-American song when it is actually a critique of the way Vietnam war veterans are treated by the US government after they have finished service from the armed forces and they get back to 'Civvy Street'.

We Are Scientists think Rage Against The Machine are pretentious

New Yorkers say bands shouldn't get political

Tue 26 Aug, 2008

Comments (1)

Maybe they should call themselves We Are Knobs. Whilst having no truck with Rage Against The Machine I think it should be pointed out that music has always been a vehicle for protest and politics from Bob Dylan, Victor Jara (look him up and learn something) Woody Guthrie, to 18th Century Italian Opera and beyond. I suggest that WAS are actually are spouting fascist ideas by telling people what they can and cannot sing about. Tossers.

Nationwide Mercury Prize 2008 nominee odds revealed

Find out who the favourites are for this year's prize

Tue 22 Jul, 2008

Comments (1)

I always thought the Mercury prize was for innovation. I loved the Last Shadow Puppets album but it's only a Scott Walker on speed record. This is turning into another hype fest for the music industry who are desperate for sales now due to CD sales being down. That's why Radiohead are niminated as they gave their's away as cheap as you like through downloads and now it's released on CD the music industry needs to try and kick it back up the charts. Money Money Money. Abba were right all along!

'Ian Brown is stopping Stone Roses reunion'

Well, it would have to be better than the total debacle that was their live performances after the second album. Maybe Ian Brown is right. I'd probably go along if they did it but can't say as I'd lose sleep over it. Now, XTC deciding to play live for the first time since 1982...that I'd walk over hot coals for!

Itsverymalty, have you ever heard of the word 'irony'? And what has the way that someone looks got to do with it? Your 'bye bye career' statement has got to be worth a comment too. This guy has been knocking out albums for over 30 years and he's just come up with his best work since he split The Jam up. He'll be following that with a sold out arena tour in the autumn. I wish my career was as bad as his........ Anyway, you keep listening to your Killers, Fratellis, Coldplay CD's and in that way we'll never meet up.
