Woman fined millions for music file-sharing in US

Mother of four handed $1.9 million (£1.2 million) fine

Fri 19 Jun, 2009

Comments (1)

Instead of chasing the spectre of piracy, industry groups like the RIAA and BPI and their ilk need to take their well-coiffed, over-paid heads out of their arses and work out ways to engage consumers. They're making baby steps with Spotify, allowing folks like iTunes to remove DRM and so forth, but those efforts are preaching to the choir. Alienating more fringe music listeners with legal action is only going to exacerbate the dire situation.

Jay-Z: 'I'd work with Oasis and Noel Gallagher'

Rapper says he'd work with Gallagher, even after Glastonbury diss

Fri 04 Jul, 2008

Decibel, you are a wally. That's putting it politely. How does this make Jay Z the two-faced one? Noel slagged him off and now says he likes him so as no to appear the narrow-minded plonker any sane person realised he is from the get go.And Jay-Z is more likely to cause violence than Oasis? Liam is the poster boy for arrogant, fist-throwing neanderthals the world over, and that's reflected by the average low IQ, lager-swilling monobrow twat you see at their gigs.

The Troglodyte: Download is primarily aimed at the Kerrang! market with its mix of metal, punk and emo.Reading (and latterly, Leeds) have played host to a vast range of artists across a number of genres.Glastonbury is a contemporary arts festival. Not a guitar music festival. Not an indie festival. Contemporary arts. Like it or loathe it, rap and hip hop are contemporary arts.I'm not a fan of Jay Z, or his genre, but in choosing him as a headliner, the family Eavis have proven they have a solid understanding of their remit.

Music industry deemed 'more untrustworthy'

New research suggests public don't trust music industry figures

Mon 21 Apr, 2008

Comments (1)

It's not really a question of trust. As with any creature backed into a corner, the immediate response from the record industry when faced with all these wonderful new ways for people to share music was to lash out without thinking about the long-term implications. And I'm not just talking about the persistant legal harassment of music fans who may or may not be sharing music illegally, although that is absurd. No, take for example recent record industry unnovations like those plastic iTunes cards you can buy in Starbucks. Yes, pay full whack for a piece of plastic in a bricks-and-mortar store that allows you to download a single, low quality copy of an album. With DRM, no less.See also: albums on USB drives; DVD singles.Rather than go all out and embrace digital (even if it is long after the horse has bolted), they keep taking these silly baby steps that highlight how out of touch they are with how people consume music. If the majors want to stay in the game, they need to come up with a serious alternative to all these different download sources. I'm talking...- DRM-free.- High bitrate, multiple formats.- Prices that reflect the reduction of costs between physical and digital media (paying CD prices for binary data is a joke).- A vast catalogue. Not just the content from one label. Or a few. Content from all labels. And by content, I don't just mean singles and albums - I mean live shows, rarities, remixes and other items you cannot get elsewhere, too.Of course, this is just pissing in the wind. The majors do not listen to anyone but their shareholders, and judging by idiots like the guy from Terra Firma who took over EMI, the shareholders talk louder than music fans.

The Who's Roger Daltrey: 'Weather to blame for Glasto downturn'

Last year's Sunday night headliner also criticises line-up and prices

Tue 08 Apr, 2008

Comments (1)

I went to Glastonbury twice, and was fortunate enough to catch some wonderful bands there; and there is more to it than just the music. That being said, I have to agree with Roger:- This year's headliners are average (not that The Who's addition to last year's bill made it any better)- The weather is always poxy- It is hugely over-priced- The facilities are revoltingI moved to the US last year and managed to experience Lollapalooza. It's cheaper, the line-ups have been consistently excellent for the last few years, and it's not in the middle of nowhere so transport and amenities are abundant. Oh, and the weather's gorgeous.Compared to other festivals, Glastonbury does have a lot of flaws. Regardless of your take on his music, Roger's on point.

Cashing in on the huge interest in the reformation by releasing a shit ton of different versions with different bonus tracks, cover art and extras - knowing full well there are people who will buy all the versions. 3. Books of (terrible) poetry.
