50 Cent - Power of the Dollar: Wikipedia Album Entry
Power of the Dollar is an unofficially-released but heavily bootlegged album by rapper 50 Cent. The album, which was originally set for a September 12, 2000 release, was supposed to be his debut album with Columbia Records. Prior to the filming of the music video for the single "Thug Love," 50 Cent was shot nine times. When Columbia records found out that 50 Cent had been shot, they scratched releasing the full LP. So instead, Columbia released the album as an EP.
Allmusic writes that the tracks utilize "penetrating wit and funk-infused beats, accompanied by grand orchestrations of commanding horns, pronounced percussion, and various string elements". The first single, "How to Rob", was released on August 10, 1999. In the song, 50 Cent comically explains how he would rob many prominent figures in the music industry. Several rappers including Jay-Z, Big Pun, DMX, and Wu-Tang Clan affiliates The American Cream Team replied to the song.
The second single, "Thug Love" featuring Destiny's Child, was released on September 21, 1999. A few days before 50 Cent was scheduled to film its music video, he was shot and confined to a hospital due to his injuries. While in hospital, he signed a publishing deal with Columbia Records. However, he was dropped from the label after they found out he had been shot. The track, "Ghetto Qu'ran (Forgive Me)", has been speculated to be the reason for the shooting.
