Originating from Brighton, East Sussex, England, but later based in south London, the Maccabees emerged in 2006 as the latest in a seemingly endless stream of Bloc Party and Libertines cloned bands. Formed in 2003 by Orlando Weeks (vocals), Hugo White (guitar), Felix White (guitar/vocals), Rupert Jarvis (bass) and Robert Dylan Thomas (drums), the quintet chose a suitably pretentious band name referring to the group of early Jewish rebels who fought a war against Antiochus IV Epiphanes to establish an independent Land of Israel. They made their recording debut in November 2005 with the 7-inch single "X-Ray"/"Lego". The follow-up, "Latchmere" (so called after the band's local leisure centre in Battersea, south London), was released at the start of 2006 by established UK independent label Fierce Panda Records. Featuring the same speed driven indie pop sound as their debut, the positive reception to the single led to a recording contract with Fiction Records.
