Formed in 2003 by Adam Baker (vocals), Kenny Florence (guitar), Mike Robinson (bass), Zach Oden (guitar), Anna Spence (piano) and Nick Radford (drums), this North Carolina-based band endeared themselves to many critics with their playful and inventive indie rock. The members had been playing together in bands for several years and Annuals was in fact launched as an offshoot of lead guitarist Florence's main band, Sedona. The sextet's early releases, the Lay Down Dry demo and the Git' Got EP, were released via the independent Terpsikhore Records label. A contract with the Brooklyn-based Ace Fu Records led to the release of Be He Me in 2006. The album revealed Annuals to be worthy rivals to more fĂȘted indie rock outfits such as Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene, with chief songwriter Baker constructing a dazzling collection of tracks that cheerfully veered between folk pop and driving guitar rock.
