Chromeo Biography

Emerging from Montreal in 2002, this Canadian synth pop duo was formed by Pee Thugg (b. Patrick Gemayel; keyboards/talk box) and Dave 1 (b. David Macklovitch; guitar/vocals). The latter was a busy presence on the Canadian hip-hop scene in the late 90s and early 00s, co-founding the Audio Research Records label with his brother (DJ A-Trak) and working as hip-hop editor at Vice magazine. He had collaborated on musical projects with Gemayel since their high school days, with the duo forming Chromeo to indulge their love of 80s electronic pop. The cheerful electro funk of the "You're So Gangsta' single was repeated on 2004"s She's In Control, which also flirted with the equally outdated new romanticism and new jack swing styles.

A series of mix albums followed in the next two years, giving some insight into the duo's musical influences (Herbie Hancock, Linx, Sharon Redd). Their second album, Fancy Footwork, was released in summer 2007. This time around the vocal hooks and melodies were more pop orientated, and with the duo keeping the pace up over the 40-minute running time the album proved to be one of the most enjoyable of the year.
