Cut Copy Biography

Cut Copy is the brainchild of Australian graphic designer Dan Whitford, who took time out from his graphic arts degree to begin making music. An investment in a second-hand sampler yielded the blissful early EP I Thought Of Numbers, one of the first releases on the Modular Recordings label when it came out in 2001. Whitford's love of sampling grew apace but when his sampler burnt out on stage it was time to rethink his approach. Guitarist Tim Hoey, drummer Mitchell Scott and bass/keyboard player Bennett Foddy were all recruited to broaden the Cut Copy sound, which Whitford took to describing as "New Order crossed with Daft Punk through My Bloody Valentine's distortion pedal".

Following Foddy's departure in 2004, the remaining trio released a number of singles, of which "Saturdays" made an understated yet euphoric impact. This was followed by the Cut Copy album debut proper, Bright Like Neon Love. The hints of French house no doubt owed something to the presence of producer Philippe Zdar of Cassius. Whitford, who also contributed the album's artwork, subsequently took his band out on extensive tours and festival appearances, securing them a loyal live following. Having been invited to join the ranks of Fabric's compilation series in 2006, the lead singer supplied a strongly danceable set of post-punk and twenty-first century electronica. The band then regrouped for a second album, with the euphoric single "Hearts On Fire" appearing in early 2007. The slightly delayed In Ghost Colours was given a positive reception when it was finally released the following March, with most critics agreeing the album was a more fully rounded recording than the band's debut.
