Empirical

Empirical is a Jazz project, formed in 2007, involving four young British jazz musicians that aims to expand on the traditions of jazz. The group performs compositions and improvisations that express ideas beyond music with a uniquely equal approach, each member being given equal responsibility for the direction of the music whether in composition or in the moment of improvisation.

Their aim is to present the audience with a path into music by commenting on well known ideas in the world today, drawing influences from film and TV, proverbs and sayings, and even sports, expressing their thoughts and opinions through the collaborative trial-and-error process of jazz improvisation.

The members of Empirical are: Nathaniel Facey (alto saxophone), Shaney Forbes (drums), Lewis Wright (vibes player) (vibraphone) and Tom Farmer (bass player) (bass).

Empirical has been presenting projects, performances and recordings since 2007. The eponymous debut album, Empirical, and the 2009 release Out 'n' In were extensively toured on the jazz circuit in the UK and abroad. Their most recent album is Elements of Truth (2012).

On 14 February 2012, Empirical featured on Jamie Cullum's radio show.
