Some members of the band were close friends with Suicidal Tendencies, who are from the same hometown as Excel. Guitarist Adam Siegel and drummer Greg Saenz (now in The Dwarves) contributed to singer Mike Muir's projects Cyco Miko and Infectious Grooves.
Excel released two albums, Split Image (1987) and The Joke's on You (1989), before Siegel joined the ranks with Infectious Grooves in 1990. In 1992 Siegel and Saenz left Excel to form power-trio My Head. After five years of silence, Excel returned to record their third and final album, Seeking Refuge (1995), and then broke up for good.
In 2003, ex-members of Excel considered legal action against the famous heavy metal band Metallica over the song "Enter Sandman", which they claim borrows heavily from the Excel's song "Tapping into the Emotional Void", originally included on The Joke's on You LP, released in 1989, two years before the release of Metallica's Black Album.
In May 2006, singer Dan Clements joined forces with former No Mercy singer Kevin "The Jerk" Guercio and former Suicidal Tendencies members Grant Estes, Amery Smith and Louiche Mayorga in the band AgainST.
