Icon were formed in December 2001 when Ronan joined on bass to complete line up of Tony (vocals and guitar), Shark (guitar) and Al (drums). After some initial cover sets in Kilcock and the sadly now defunct Clifton Court, they played their first original songs at a charity gig in The O'Reilly Theatre, Dublin. They spent the following months writing and gigging around Dublin.

In September 2002, Icon entered the inaugural Wella Shockwaves 'Get Out of the Garage' Unsigned Bands Competition. They got through to the Dublin heats in the Temple Bar Music Centre, and qualified from there to be one of just two Dublin bands in the ten-band national final in Dublin's Ambassador Theatre. The band came second and out of this result got two days recording time in Cork. They laid down two tracks, 'Say' and 'The Twelfth of Never', and continued writing until their summer exams.

Extensive gigging ensued and Icon played a charity Battle of the Bands in Skibbereen, Co. Cork, in August 2003. They won this and received more recording time in Cork. Due to record two tracks at the end of October, their plans were put on hold after much of their equipment was stolen following a gig at Whelans in Dublin. The band rescheduled recording for March and, having replaced their equipment, laid down four tracks, "Duck and Cover", "Cowbell Song", "Hunting in Packs" and a one take demo version of "Come Again". Less than a month later, Icon won the first inter-varsity Battle of the Bands between NUI Maynooth, DCU and TCD, and were rewarded with recording dates at the world class Grouse Lodge residential studios in Co. Westmeath. The band recorded a further two tracks and set about organising gigs for the Autumn, playing in NUI Maynooth and Trinity College Dublin, and culminating in an extremely successful headline gig at the Sugar Club in Dublin.

In 2005 Icon continued writing and gigging, winning their second consecutive inter-varsity band competition in DCU, and then after a brief hiatus and finding a new rehearsal room began gigging, recording and writing all over again at the start of 2006.
