Ewen began her career performing in the role of Nala in the West End production of The Lion King. She then progressed into television in both the United Kingdom and Australia making several appearances on a number of well-known shows. In 2005 Ewen joined the R&B group Trinity Stone which achieved limited success in the UK, Ireland, and Russia. On 31 January 2009 Ewen won the British national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest and represented the country at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow on 16 May, in which she achieved, out of a total of 25 countries, 5th place for the United Kingdom. In doing so, she became the highest placed UK Eurovsion act since 2002.
Following rumours of trouble within the British girl group Sugababes on 21 September, 2009 it was finally confirmed on the group's official website that Ewen would be replacing Keisha Buchanan as the third member of the Sugababes and they would release their seventh studio album Sweet 7 as planned.
