Pixies - Complete 'B' Sides

Pixies : Complete 'B' Sides

Flipsides to epochal singles from one of the most influential bands of the last twenty years...

Paradoxically, it was the Pixies-inspired American alternative renaissance that sowed the seeds of the Boston quartet's destruction. Had Nirvana never happened - and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' owes everything to Black Francis' sense of proportion and propulsion - chances are they'd be huge right now. This, though, is to disregard the sheer wilfulness that nestles...

Pixies - Complete 'B' Sides: Wikipedia Album Entry

After Pixies disbanded in the nineties, they left a large body of singles and B-sides that were relatively tough to track down compared to their popular LPs. Thus, this Complete B-Sides record simplifies the task of hunting down the non-album tracks. The album was released in March of 2001 on 4AD.

It is a testament to the strength of Pixies that, despite the fact these songs (or these versions of some of their more well-known songs) were not on their full-lengths, these tunes are very strong. The band is generally revered for their amazing sense of songwriting dynamics and unconventional yet catchy melodic arrangements; this record showcases this characteristic very well. The tracks come from various eras of the Pixies' history, from early "Come on Pilgrim" asides to their later, early-nineties period. This means the sound and production levels vary greatly, but it's no detriment to this album's appeal. Some live cuts are thrown in as well, including the blistering fan-favorite "Into The White."

Undoubtedly, Pixies' influence will loom large over the music of the future as it already has to other nineties and contemporary bands' records. This wouldn't be the first record to buy for a neophyte, but is a great addition to those people who are already fans.
