Identified by their masks and matching costumes, The Aquabats are perhaps most recognized for their superhero-themed persona and visual aesthetic. Detailed through their albums and website, the band has cultivated an elaborate mythology surrounding their fictitious origins, in which they claim to be superheroes on a quest to save the world. Elements of this mythology cross over into the band's live shows which regularly feature onstage "battles" with costumed villains and creatures. The Aquabats' music has continually evolved over the course of their career, starting in surf and punk-inflected ska before transitioning to a brand of synthesizer-driven rock and pop in the early 2000s. The band's current musical style blends elements of rock, New Wave, ska, and synthpop.
The Aquabats' second album, 1997's The Fury of The Aquabats!, was their most commercially successful, reaching no. 172 on the Billboard 200. Their fifth and most recent studio album, Hi-Five Soup!, was released in January 2011. The Aquabats! Super Show!, a television series starring the band and combining live action and animation, premiered in March 2012.
