Formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester, in late 2006, this UK indie band was frequently compared to the city's most famous guitar rock exponents of the previous decade, Oasis, with frontman Liam Fray (guitar/vocals) exuding the confident swagger of his close namesake Liam Gallagher. With the line-up completed by childhood friends Daniel Conan Moores (guitar), Mark Cuppello (bass) and Michael Campbell (drums/vocals), the Courteeners released their debut single, "Cavorting", the following August. A tour with the established UK band the Coral followed at the end of the year, and the support of an excitable part of the UK press contingent helped push the ensuing singles, "Acrylic", "What Took You So Long" and "Not Nineteen Forever", into the charts. Noted producer Stephen Street produced the quartet's album debut St. Jude, an enjoyably melodic if highly derivative collection of guitar-based indie rock.
