The Wombats Biography

This UK indie rock band from Liverpool was formed in 2003 by Matthew Murphy (b. 23 July 1984, Liverpool, Merseyside, England; vocals/guitar), Dan Haggis (b. Daniel Joseph Haggis, 17 February 1984, Liverpool, Merseyside, England; drums), and Tord Øverland-Knudsen (b. 24 July 1982, Norway; bass). They were all former students of Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). The band stated that they started out "as a joke that they didn't want anyone to find funny", apparently by playing their first gig wearing jester's hats and sunglasses. Combining the simplistic indie rock and pop punk sound of the mid-00s, the band was signed to 14th Floor Records. They gained popularity with the release of the catchy single "Backfire At The Disco", which received airplay on the music channel MTV2. The accompanying video was a smart spoof of the Cliff Richard video for his "Wired For Sound". The clever "Let's Dance To Joy Division" received a moderate amount of airplay in September 2007 and was followed by A Guide To Love, Loss & Depression. The album reprised many of the tracks that had appeared on the previous year's Japanese release Girls, Boys & Marsupials.
