Wolfmother Biography

Retro heavy rock outfit formed in 2003 by Australians Andrew Stockdale (b. 20 July 1976, New South Wales, Australia; vocals/guitar), Chris Ross (b. Erskinville, New South Wales, Australia; bass/keyboards) and Myles Heskett (b. New South Wales, Australia; drums). The trio's 70s-styled hard rock sound began attracting a cult following in their native Sydney and led to a recording contract with the local Modular Records label. Their self-titled debut EP was released at the end of 2004 and had soon shifted more than 10,000 copies. Tracks such as "Dimension" and "White Unicorn" demonstrated the full extent of Wolfmother's devotion to the lyrical ideas of early 70s behemoths Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. While the lyrics may have been something of an acquired taste, the trio's musical mash-up of hard rock, grunge and funk rock was delivered with a youthful verve that left it difficult to criticise.

A major label contract with Universal Records followed, with the trio decamping to Los Angeles to record their debut album. The trio's self-titled debut album, released at the end of 2005, featured re-recorded versions of the EP tracks alongside eight new songs. The trio's first US release, the Dimension EP, followed via Interscope at the start of 2006. The American release of Wolfmother was boosted by the prominent use of the track "Love Train" in a television advertisement for the iPod music player.
