The History Of The NME Awards
A no-holds-barred romp through six decades of rock 'n' roll excess.
1962
Trophies are handed out to Cliff And The Shadows, Helen Shapiro, Billy Fury and Ted Heath (again). Meanwhile tens of thousands of pop-hungry punters scream themselves hoarse at the sight of gold-suited youngster Shane Fenton (that's Alvin Stardust to you) gyrating his way through 'Moody Guy'. Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band tootle the death knells of trad jazz, before the emergent moptop invasion condemn them and their goatee-bearded ilk to the beatnik bunker for the rest of eternity.
Presenters: Brenda Lee and Johnny Burnette
