The History Of The NME Awards
A no-holds-barred romp through six decades of rock 'n' roll excess.
1970
At the close of the '60s, rock, to a man, decides that awards ceremonies are passé. The making of music is a serious business, involving orchestras, colossal analogue synths and spangly capes. Not for them the evil frippery of celebratory trinkets, screaming teenies and the opportunity to rub shoulders with Jimmy Saville. Consequently, the 18th and final NME Poll Winners’ show is little more than a pop travesty, wholly unrepresentative of the paper's forward-looking editorial stance. White Plains, Edison Lighthouse, The Pipkins, Dana, Brotherhood Of Man, Pickettywitch, Vanity Fare, Blue Mink… need we continue? The NME, somewhat wisely, retire our awards ceremony.
