The History Of The NME Awards
A no-holds-barred romp through six decades of rock 'n' roll excess.
1993
Between 1971 and 1993, the elder statesmen of rock are gradually excluded from the NME's end of year accolades. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) create the Brit Awards, a back-slapping farce notable for keeping an eye on sales figures rather than artistic achievements. 'Must We Throw This Brit At Our Pop Kids?' demands the NME news pages. The sheer injustice and farcical nature of the Brits has become increasingly intolerable. NME instantly rises to the challenge. The NME Poll Winners’ Awards are reanimated and plans are set in motion to reward the worthy as opposed to the wealthy.
