The NME Carling Awards moves to Hammersmith Po Na Na, which reverts to its original name, The Hammersmith Palais, for the occasion. Why? Because two months after frontman Joe Strummer's death, NME is honouring The Clash, who immortalised the place in their classic song ‘(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais'. Their Godlike Genius Award is presented by Kate Moss and Bobby Gillespie. Other big winners include Coldplay (Album Of The Year), Oasis (Best UK Band) and The Libertines (Best New Band). We also have live performances for the first time since the ‘60s from The Datsuns and Noel Gallagher, who finishes with a version of 'Wonderwall' performed with a string quartet, Nick Jago from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club vies with Pete Doherty for the title of Most Wasted Person In The Room, Doves miss out on collecting their award when they’re in the lavs and one enterprising Japanese music fan attempts to sneak into the venue in a crate of tablecloths.
