The NME Awards Tour History
NME takes the best new bands out on the road every year
1995
Four bands, six dates, one bus: the inaugural NME Awards tour set the precedent for future years by assembling a bill that was both diverse and full of groups that no-one can really remember 12 years later. But! Way back then in the distant mists of time, Veruca Salt were heroes with their indie disco perennial ‘Seether’, pictures of panda-eyed Marion singer Jaime Harding were blu-tacked to student common room walls nationwide and even self-proclaimed “clit-rock” act Skunk Anansie were considered pretty cool. Then there were the 60ft Dolls – basically three drunk Welshmen from Newport whose drummer, Carl Bevan, was a famous bishop’s son, the Dolls’ rabble rousing mod-punk was the perfect way to start the night. Plus the bands all ended up getting on so well that they’d routinely get together onstage to cover Oasis’ ‘Whatever’ at the end of each night. Bless!
