The NME Awards Tour History
NME takes the best new bands out on the road every year
2003
This was the year the tour’s headlines were stolen by the astonishing sight of The Polyphonic Spree, a 20-plus army of white-robed happy clappers led by the David Koresh of rock, Tim DeLaughter. Such was their infectious enthusiasm and way with a tune that even New York gloom merchants Interpol, who also enhanced their growing reputation on the jaunt, were seen to crack the occasional smile watching them. Elsewhere, New Zealanders The Datsuns provided the uncompromising rawk thrills while Irish popsters The Thrills managed to charm everyone with their homages to California, clearly a place they preferred to their native country.
