What do you think of the NME Cool List? Vote now to decide the Readers' Top 10

Since its inauguration in 2002 the NME Cool List has taken the form of a major feature in the magazine. This year, however, we're placing it exclusively online in order to make it easier for you to debate the list and decide your own Top 10.

Below you'll find our own run-down of the coolest people of 2008. If there's anyone you think we've unfairly overlooked, let us know by leaving a comment. Meanwhile, you can help decide the NME Readers' Cool List by browsing through a much longer shortlist and rating each artist out of ten.

As ever, aside from being a bit of fun, it's also an attempt to take the pulse of Britain in 2008. What trends emerge from this year's Cool List?

One thing that stands out is the kudos given to compelling, energetic live performers – from Late Of The Pier's Sam Dust to Rage Against The Machine's Zack de la Rocha. Perhaps that's indicative of an industry that has swung so dramatically in favour of live music in the wake of disappearing CD sales.

It's fitting too, given current events on the other side of the Atlantic, that the creative resurgence of America is reflected in this year's list, with 18 US artists making the Top 50, set against 14 in 2007.

Most striking, however, is the number of 'veteran' performers in the list, from Robert Plant to Johnny Marr. No fewer than 13 artists have been making music for over 10 years. Proof, perhaps, that 'coolness' is not the preserve of the young, and is a commodity that can be regained as well as lost.

Enjoy the list – and don't miss the special Cool List show on NME TV (Sky Channel 382) on Wednesday (November 4) at 9pm, repeated at the same time on Saturday November 8.
