In The NME Office - Behind the scenes at NME - Behind the scenes at NME

Pivot? Negative. Cut Copy? Sorry, but no. Fuck Buttons? Howlin' Rain? White Denim? Neeeeoooo chance. A Place To Bury Strangers? Get the hell out of here...

So, the list of NME writers' Albums of the Year 2008 has been decided, and my own personal choices didn't see fit to coincide with the mass vote, but that's democracy for you.

How the voting works:
All NME writers submit their Top 20 Tracks. Everyone's Number One album gets 20 points, everyone's Number 20 album gets 1 point and so on. Whichever record gets the most points wins.

Simple.

continued...

You can read the full list of the top fifty albums in this week's magazine, but for now here's the Top Ten. Make sure you hit up this blog with your own personal favourites below.

Meanwhile, here's a selection of artists discussing their albums of the year:

10 - Friendly Fires : Friendly Fires
This self-titled debut kept the post-new rave percussive flame alive and strong in 2008.

If you liked this album go out and buy: Cut Copy's In Ghost Colours

9 - Kings Of Leon : Only By The Night
They went stadium. It worked. Did you HEAR the new songs at Glasto?!

If you liked this album go out and buy: Tom Petty's Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers

8 - Mystery Jets : 21
Proving they didn't need their dad to hold their hands after all.

If you liked this album go out and buy: Duran Duran's Rio

7 - Santogold : Santogold
Another gold-plated classic that ramped up several of our festivals.

If you liked this album go out and buy: Mpho's stuff (when she's finished it)

6 - Metronomy : Nights Out
Very much an opinion splitter in the NME office. It just happened that the naysayers were wrong.

If you liked this album go out and buy: All the things Little Boots has done while you wait for the album (being recorded in LA in January)

5 - Foals : Antidotes
Massive. Horny. Itchy. Perfection.

If you liked this album go out and download: A free track by Three Trapped Tigers and another by Gallops! courtesy of your friendly neighbourhood music website.

4 - Vampire Weekend : Vampire Weekend
Preppy afro-pop obsessives done good, very very good.

If you liked this album go out and buy: Fela Kuti's back catalogue.

3 - Glasvegas : Glasvegas
A cheese grater to the cochlea for me, but undoubtedly one of the year's breakthroughs.

If you liked this album go out and buy: A Place To Bury Strangers' self-titled debut for some REAL wall of sound action.

2 - TV On The Radio : Dear Science
Dave Sitek's day job blew even his prodigious collaborations out of the water.

If you liked this album go out and buy: Their back catalogue, it's even better.

1 - MGMT : Oracular Spectacular
Who else? We liked this. A lot. Unanimously.

If you liked this album go out and buy: Chairlift's Does You Inspire You

Now hit us up with your own Top Ten below!

jonny [Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 17:21
wow an nme list i agree with... roughly
Oscar [Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 17:45
You have to be taking the piss. No Fleet Foxes (easily the album of the year, almost the decade), Bon Iver, The Killers. Johnny Flynn, I mean that is an amazing cd and you gave it an 8. MGMT's album is great though.
Wat [Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 18:16
The first time i roughly agree with the nme in a long long time. Would have liked to see mystery jets album higher though that album fucking killed me this year
Emiliano [Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 18:56
1. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular, 2. VAMPIRE WEEKEND - Vampire Weekend, 3. CRYSTAL STILTS - Alight of night, 4. MOGWAI - The Hawk Is Howling, 5. LATE OF THE PIER - Fantasy Black Channel, 6. TV ON THE RADIO - Dear Science, 7. CRYSTAL CASTLES - Crystal Castles, 8. DEERHUNTER - Microcastle, 9. METRONOMY – Nights Out, 10. SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS - Alpinism.
Dru [Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 20:06
I have to add another comment about their not being Stay Positive in the top 50. That's just ridiculous.
Me [Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 21:45
I don't know how you've missed off the most important album of the year. Where on earth is Third by Portishead? A mature effort from a serious band, unlike a lot of the ones in this list that are half-baked throwaways you'll have forgotten about in two years time.
[Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 22:06
Another year, another awful NME list. Of the albums in the top 10, only TV On the Radio and Vampire Weekend are worth having.
AaB [Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 22:31
Where's Laura Marling I feel sick to the core
E [Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 22:37
THESE NEW PURITANS FFS
kevin [Visitor] //December 10 2008 at 23:17
oasis not in top 10 ? disgrace. mgmt are worthy winners tho.
Nathan Williams [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 07:57
I actually agree with this list quite alot. If I was involved, my top 20 would have been: 1 MGMT - Oracular Spectacular 2 TV On the Radio - Dear Science, 3 Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours 4 Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes 5 Santogold - Santogold 6 Glasvegas - Glasvegas 7 A Place to Bury Strangers - A Place to Bury Strangers 8 Bloc Party - Intamacy 9 Hercules and Love Affair - Hercules and Love Affair 10 Beck - Modern Guilt 11 Primal Scream - Beautiful Future 12 Mystery Jets - 21 13 Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul 14 Black Kids - Partie Traumatic 15 Lightspeed Champion - Falling of the Lavender Bridge 16 The Verve - Forth 17 Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend 18 Portishead - Third 19 Neon Neon - Stainless Style 20 Deerhunter - Microcastle
knackered_cons [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 08:05
where's late of the pier?! Friendly Fires is a mere shadow of Fantasy Black Channel.
Nick [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 08:16
Late of the pier's album was great, and not included. For shame!!
Too Many Shrooms [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 11:01
MGMT? Yeah i suppose,i keep coming back to it,its got really good fucking songs on it,no doubt about it. No Verve,Hold Steady, both great albums from start to finish imo.
No Age [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 11:07
In a year where noise-punk poked it's ugly head above ground, the smell gained world-wide influence and LA developed an actual scene not based around motley crue, all of which NME supported in a hardcore way it was a shame not to see No Age- Nouns in the list. It's an album that works from start to finish. And while Fucked Up and the heavily influenced LA-noise Los Campesinos new album were in there No Age's is perhaps better than both.
[Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 11:10
Top Ten Overyhped Pieces of Shit of 2008 perhaps.
Anon [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 11:11
Where's Age of the Understatement?!
jono [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 11:22
Why is there no Bloc Party, Late of The Pier or crystal castles
shoe [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 11:29
MGMT are overhyped rubbish. My 10 are: 1. Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago 2. Fleet Foxes – Self Titled/Sun Giant EP 3. The Drones – Havilah 4. Dodos – Visiter 5. No Age - Nouns 6. Deerhunter – Microcastle 7. The Tallest Man on Earth – Shallow Graves 8. TV on the Radio – Dear Science, 9. Vampire Weekend – Self Titled 10. Beach House - Devotion
Christophe [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 11:58
We French music lovers will always wonder why British people always ignore their best music makers, like Merz or Tindersticks. Good you put Foals in your list, but Metronomy and Mystery Jets, simply ridiculous...
TSV1860 [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 12:05
NME needs to take its blinkers off and take note of what is happening in continental Europe. No mention of VETO or Spleen United (DEN), Notwist or Peterlicht (GER), Lykke Li, Joel Alme or Markus Krunegård (SWE)... you are missing out on a lot, Brits
Girlfromschool [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 12:48
LATE OF THE PIER!
Iain [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 13:07
I wouldn't wipe my harris with any of these. You want REM, Marillion, Guns N' Roses, Brett Anderson and the Killers.
Mike [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 13:21
Where's Fleet Foxes? you numptys!
Aaron [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 13:33

martin [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 14:00

Lizzie [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 16:37
Il divo are the best Take that are almost the best
Victor Mature [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 17:00
Bon Iver + Fleet Foxes r boring Mojo acts, and shouldn't be in the NME top ten. LOTP should have been there, as much mentioned above.
nonon [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 17:28
1.not mgmt 2.not mgmt 3.not mgmt..... album list equation=no mgmt whatsoever.
Gay [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 17:47

kings of leon didn't even play sex on fire at glasto!!!!!!!!
[Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 17:56
so your saying foals, santogold and mystery jets (shudder) are all better than white denim, the killers and fleet foxes? shame on you nme! However, thumbs up on the mgmt call, best debut since is this it (even narrowly beating WPSIATWIN)
alex [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 18:06
How the hell does Vampire Weekend even get into this thing and Portishead are nowhere in sight?
David [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 18:08
Why is bloc party and oasis not in the top 5!!!
charlie [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 18:46

JON [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 20:11
LATE OF THE PIER
dylan monkey [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 20:27
FOALS obviously have released the best album this year with antidotes! and does it offend you, yeah? with you have no idea what your getting yourself into. also dan le sac vs scroobius pip with angles amazing!!!
Jono [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 21:12
I'm not the Jono above :|, But I would say TVOTR for number 1, and definitely Crystal Castles somewhere in there. Though I've always been partial to Genghis Tron...
alex [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 21:50
Late of the Pier should be top 10 easy. And no Does It Offend You Yeah? either!?
kate [Visitor] //December 11 2008 at 22:18

all the bands in this list are terrible apart from Kings Of Leon, best band and album out at the moment and it shows as they are still in the top 10 albums. MGMT are poor and every song is the same and the singer of Glasvegas needs to cheer up and take of his glasses, he is a A* twat

Oh dear jesus, the NME once again out does it's own stupidity with a slab of shite compiled into a list of 'top albums'. You really make me cringe, I'd like to stick a siringe in your eye. Where is St. Jude, you decrepit senile miserable fools.
Stevo Murevo [Visitor] //December 12 2008 at 15:49
Possibly the worst list ever? yes, yes it is
Nikola [Visitor] //December 12 2008 at 16:15
A descent list, it just really surprises me not to see Crystal Castles and Fleet Foxes on it. I'm sure they are just behind on the list along with many of the other albums people mention above and below.
SAm [Visitor] //December 12 2008 at 17:29
I keep seeing this everywhere and it is very upsetting. I saw MGMT live, not knowing who the hell they were and they really sucked. Surely there were more albums out there worthy of number one than this band.
Mike [Visitor] //December 12 2008 at 18:26
The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound That's my one and only; that IS the album of the year!

I don't really get the little dig at White Denim, especially considering they recieved higher ratings in your magazine than some of the bands that made this list...Shame there's no placing for Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver, but, hey, it's your opinion right?!
Crofhead [Visitor] //December 14 2008 at 16:01
Totally agree about Mystery Jets, Vampire Weekend and Foals being in there, bit suprised not to see crystal castles, lady hawke or los campesinous as there all top albums! I think MGMT is a good album and a refreshing sound but to be placed number 1? Not too sure about that.
Dean [Visitor] //December 14 2008 at 16:33
These New Puritans? The Raconteurs? Bloc Party? Be Your Own PET? THE MARS FUCKING VOLTA? Where are these epic albums NME?

Laura Marling?
be-honest [Visitor] //December 15 2008 at 18:22
MGMT had an amazing first effort but i didn't find the entire album listenable... some tracks were kind of annoying (the title track for instance). I'm quite surprised not to see bloc party's "intamacy" on this list.
Tristan [Visitor] //December 16 2008 at 01:54
Any credible list would've ditched Kings Of Leon's sell out album and included at least fleet foxes or hercules and love affair or every other highly rated indie album not listed here.
Nicolas [Visitor] //December 16 2008 at 10:07
How can you forget in your singles charts The Ting Tings and Estelle????
Jack leCube [Visitor] //December 16 2008 at 11:25
I'm not going to argue with the order of the list, but if that's the top 10 albums of this year, it shows the state indie music is in, indie music should be good upbeat music, with guitars, and raw bands, not bands with keyboards, way to much electronic bullshit in that top 10. Not one band that keep to a normal band format and churn out anthems like, Arctics, the View, the Cribs etc. Out of all those albums, I can't pick out one song that makes me go, "f*ck yeah! I wanna hear that one live."But then, it has been an awful year indie wise. Go back to the Underground Heroes and Backhanded Compliments. (KOL used to have a few good anthems, four kicks etc, the last two albums are just riding on them becoming pop sellouts)
Jack [Visitor] //December 16 2008 at 14:22
Vampire Weekend is the best album of the year plain and simple. Cracking songs and sounds like nothing else
worm [Visitor] //December 16 2008 at 14:24
i think you'll find, if you buy the current issue of NME today before this week's gets published tomorrow, that in the top 50, bloc party are in at 49, hot chip at 30, crystal castles at 12, late of the pier at 18, portishead at 25, ladyhawke at 16, fleet foxes at 13, los campesinos! at 34, elbow at 17. basically the point is that they all made the top 50 and at least thats something? personally i would have had ladyhawke in the top ten and glasvegas at number 2 not 3, but theyve still got high places.
[Visitor] //December 16 2008 at 14:57
Where was dig out your soul on this list>??
Callum [Visitor] //December 16 2008 at 15:34
I would have included British Sea Power, Elbow and Lightspeed Champion on there. But overall, I agree with the majority of that, minus Glasvegas. They give me boredom-induced headaches.

Wow, this really pisses me off. I bet most of the people who like the Kings of Leon have only heard their recent stuff. If you had heard their first and second album, you would realise... They dont write their songs anymore, they have become dreary and dull. Honestly, Aha Shake Heartbreak is utterly amazing... one of the best albums ever. And they have ruined themselves.

I could have made oracular spectacular with a midi controller and a brightly coloured jacket. They're a scene band, not a musical one.

Will everyone stop mentioning Stay Positive!! We've lost Biffy to the world of stadium rock this year (keyboards on the next album fergawdsakes!!) and the Hold Steady must remain as THE rockingest party band that you can see in a smallish venue - otherwise Rock will die! See y'all in church tonight at the Roundhouse where we are all "gonna walk around and drink some more"

Amazing isn't it, people have different opinions? Heres some of mine, trying not to mention the usual stuff everyone else is, , messiah j and the expert, jape, rarely seen above ground, lykke li, monkey, friendly fires, born ruffians, hercules and love affair, CSS. I like most of the other stuff mentioned but for no other reason than good musics sake i think these names should appear on this page

The superb new album from Canada's Cowboy Fringants called "L'Expedition" should be on there.

MGMT SERIOUSLY SUCK! WAKE UP YOU MORONS!
trixie [Visitor] //December 26 2008 at 23:27
i agree with MGMT at #1, but i think fate by Dr. Dog is my close second.
Sanyo [Visitor] //December 27 2008 at 13:09
I do like a lot of the albums in this list however Elbow, BSP & Fleet foxes LPs are blatantly better than the foals/metronomy records. Also the best album ive heard all year hasnt been mentioned. Luna by The Aliens is a true classic.

Em [Visitor] //December 30 2008 at 19:57
i do agree with MGMT being number one, they are a brilliant & unique band, saw them in manchester and they are just as good-maybe better- live.although im surprised late of the pier, fleet foxes and crystal castles aren't here?
Zavi [Visitor] //December 30 2008 at 22:17
Surely 'Chinese Democracy' should be in there for pure longevity, who thought it would ever see the light of day, apart from Axl!, 'brass bombs' by Prince electric was amazing too, but I don't see it on any lists, quite the mystery there!
katelyn [Visitor] //January 3 2009 at 10:02

1- Mogwai: the hawk is howling, 2- Foals: antidotes, 3-The Cure: 4:13 dream, 4- fighting With Wire: man vs monster, 5 - Elbow: the seldom seen kid, 6- The Automatic: this is a fix, 7 - This Will Destroy You: this will destroy you. can't think of any others
Jesse [Visitor] //March 7 2009 at 08:16
I didn't read all of these, but someone said every MGMT song sounds the same!?!?!?! that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard - NONE of their songs sound the same. The reason I love them so much is because I hear so many different influences on each song, some are like old Stones, some sound like BeeGees-esque disco, some like Donovan, I hear some Frank Black, def. some Floyd, Modest Mouse. Anyone who doesn't like this band either hasn't listened to the whole album, or they are a 'hater' and just like to criticize the art of others.

Glasvegas? They sound like someone deficating on music. I would rather listen to Scouting for Girls.
