In The NME Office - Behind the scenes at NME - Behind the scenes at NME

It's almost 14 years since Blur and Oasis went head to head in the chart battle that has come to define the swagger, excess and blaring self-confidence of Britpop.

As has been repeated endlessly in the years since, it was a critical staging-post in music history, the moment 'indie' music went overground in a single dazzling depth-charge of publicity and excitement.

The Blur/Oasis tussle was reported on the News At Ten, debated by the UN Security Council - and sparked a brief-but-bloody civil conflict in Burkina Faso.

Grunge bands, instantly exposed as dreary and workmanlike, unanimously gave up overnight. National productivity quadrupled; and the entire population of Britain started wearing Union Jack parkas and bellowing the lyrics to 'Tracy Jacks' in each other's faces.

It was a pretty big deal.

NME, 12 August, 1995

continued...

Then of course there were the insults, thrilling exchanges of verbal poison, the most memorable being Noel Gallagher's withering smackdown: "Damon? He went bald trying to be me."

Received wisdom states that Blur won the initial skirmish ('Country House' beat 'Roll With It' to Number One), while Oasis won the long-term war – a view backed up by figures released yesterday by PRS, which show that, by any measure – album sales, airplay, royalty earnings – Oasis are the more successful band.

Now, of course, the rivalry has been reignited. The two veteran acts are currently the biggest draw on the live circuit (excluding Take That and their mechanical elephant).

Blur's astonishing comeback has seen them steal the show at Glastonbury and pay two megagigs at Hyde Park. Meanwhile, Oasis are about to play three nights at Wembley Stadium.

Altogether, the two bands will have played to almost 500,000 people inside two weeks.

Clearly, Blur are the band with all the momentum. There's an impassioned edge to what they're doing right now, demonstrated by Damon's tearful delivery of 'To The End' at Glastonbury.

Oasis, meanwhile, have been plagued by bad luck – think of the power failure at Heaton Park - and persistent rumours that they're on the verge of quitting, or at least taking a lengthy hiatus.

But what do you think? From the perspective of 2009, which is the better band?

(And before you comment, yes, we know it's pointless trying to turn a subjective preference into an empirical 'fact'. But that's never stopped us before).

What i want to say to anybody who read this great piece of journalism is this. Do not let The NME get away with trying to sell more copies or get more clicks with this sort of journalism. For my part Oasis are a better band but that has never stopped me listining to Blur who I like as well. Dont start arguing about who is the better band or who won the so called war. Anyone who knows the story from 14 years ago knows that the NME stoked the flames to sell copies. Dont let them get away with it this time. Let's just enjoy good music.
Luke Lewis [Member] //July 9 2009 at 15:03
Come on Sufjan, it's just a bit of fun.
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:07
I like both bands, but Blur changed the world and made it a better place. Oasis just have catchy songs.
Noel [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:10
Oasis all the way
BrianPowell [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:16
There's no doubt in my mind Oasis are better than Blur. Blur are a brilliant band end of story, but when I listen to Oasis, they make me feel 10ft tall, it's that simple.
Morrocan Peoples Revolutionary Bowls Club [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:22
This isn't even worth debating: no words can possibly describe the substantial distance by which Blur are better than Oasis! It's like asking what's better; a 3 course meal or a kick in the bollocks? Record sales mean nothing either: by those standards Westlife would be better than The Clash (someone please prove me wrong on that one).
Paul [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:23
Oasis. Hands down
Sufjan [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:24
Like to point out that Luke Lewis who commented after me is the author af this piece.

BLUR!
Dom [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:32
Bloody hell Sufjan, calm yourself. Blur are the better act in 2009, which is clear from their live performances.
Jimbo [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:36
At this point, I'd say Blur. Just because they've progressed as a band, and with their sound. Oasis DO have good songs, and I am a fan, But now I'd rather listen to Blur over Oasis.
Max [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:39
I think Blur just about edge it personally.
essex [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:40
Having been to see Blur in Hyde Park last week I have to say that I have always prefered them, better songs, better characters and a yummy Damon to front it all. Then again, there is no denying Oasis are an amazingly talented act.
Ali [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:50
I prefer oasis cos their first two albums are better than anything blur have everdone imo
moodie [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:51
blur. oasis have had one sound for 15 years. and for that reason are totally boring. the only interesting thing about them is noel gallagher's outspoken interviews.
cole [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:53
if anyone says blur then they nothing about music. blur are good, oasis are great
Heather [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:54
Blur are a thousand times more creative and original than Oasis. I think even Oasis fans would have to give them this.
Jim Roache [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:56
Oasis by a mile, peoples lives were changed by Oasis songs. Parklife?? I dont think so.
Mucker [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 15:58
Oasis in a landslide! Blur make me feel like a schoolboy. Oasis make me feel like a man... man.
tom [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:01
oasis - no contest
Potter [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:01
Oasis. No contest. Saw Blur @ Hyde Park - they were a disappointment. Can't wait for Sunday!!!
BrianPowell [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:02
Sufjan, don't be a cunt lad, like Luke Lewis said it's just a bit of fun, easier not to try and be clever.

blurasis
T Griffiths [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:05
Oasis any day but they are a poor man's Stone Roses.
Josh [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:10
Blur anyday
Del [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:11
For me you just have to look at the support bands. Blur had the cream of exciting and exotic artists from across the musical spectrum. Oasis have Kasabian and The Enemy, straight down the line people's rock bands. I like artsy fartsy creative music, so I prefer Blur, but Oasis are absolute masters of music for the people. Each to their own.
Rhys [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:14
Both great. Oasis are better
Eszt [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:14
Blur! I am listen to Oasis too but they are very similar than The Beatles ...Blur is original.
Sarah [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:16
Blur all the way. Oasis sound like a poor tribute act of The Beatles most of the time.
don larry from torino [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:16
blur! i'm surprised there are no comments about pulp being better than both of them (anyway i still think blur are better than pulp too)
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:17
Blur, they shouldn't even be compared any more - and shouldn't really ever have been, there really are no similarities that can be drawn between both bands musically, from where the better band can then be chosen, they're just different and it's a matter of taste - and those with it prefer Blur :P. Seriously though, 1995 - the two biggest bands in Britain with little cross-over in their fan-bases - why not see who can sell more records based on who has the bigger fan-base, as the only similarities are popularity, age and nationality. I say this because I am a life-long massive Blur fan, a total completist, I have everything they have ever released in every format it's available in, I have imports and pretty much everything Blur-related done in good taste (I never did invest in the Smash Hits organiser). I have never been like this with any other band - I just love Blur and happen not to really 'get' Oasis' music, but don't think being a fan of Oasis and a fan of Blur is mutually exclusive - people have already commented that they like both - I just happen to love Blur and only enjoy a couple of Oasis songs... It is, however, a testement to both bands' huge popularity that fourteen years on this story is still being sold, when since then thousands of bands have come and gone.
Roz [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:22
FUCKING BLURRRRRRR!! all the way. Oasis just got boring after their first album.
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:24
oasis are bad live they have no stage Presence i left early when they where at sunderland there songs are good though but blur have the whole package i seen the glastonbury gig they looked brilliant so blur are better
Garry Boy [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:24
Oasis Oasis Oasis Oasis Oasis Oasis Oasis Oasis Oasis Oasis Oasis Oasis! As much as Liam's voice may not be at it's best I feel like everyone fails to notice that Damon Albarn is fucking horrific live. He makes Ian Brown sound like Freddie Mercury!
Emmet [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:25
"Oasis, meanwhile, have been plagued by bad luck – think of the power failure at Heaton Park - and persistent rumours that they're on the verge of quitting, or at least taking a lengthy hiatus." Hmm, "plagued by bad luck"? Dont think so mate. Oasis are in the middle of their biggest UK (and Irish!) tour to date, playing to well over 500'000 people. Apart from 1 night in manchester with sound problems, every gig has been a total success. As for rumours of a split, its been that way since 96, whats new.. Both bands are on a serious high, which is great to see! Though the point has to be made, whereas Blur are basking in the glory of the returning heros, Oasis have never gone away. Theyve remained one of the worlds biggest bands for 15 years, something which should be commended.
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:25
we all know Shed Seven beat them both for album sales and success.....
Germano [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:26
OASIS! ButI like Blur as well.
H [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:26
saw both in last few weeks and prefered blur
Emmet [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:27
Both bands enduring popularity show what a top scene britpop was in the first place.
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:28
Oasis defo. Blur mockney songs are awful !!
Themwerethedays [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:30
Just look at that fantastic NME cover compared to today's "Smash Hits" offering. What went wrong? IMHO both bands have made some good tracks but neither were/are worth getting that excited about.
Blur [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:31
Blur are much more talented.
Sufjan [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:33
Hear that laughter? Thats Steve Sutherland laughing his tits of again. Well done NME
franky d [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:35
IN my opinion Blur are the better band. THey may not have sold as many albums but when has that ever been a measure of how good a band is? Blur are able to reinvent themselves and take on alternate influences while Oasis can't take influence from anyone but the Beatles and keep on banging out the same old stuff year after year.
Sarah [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:35
Saw Blur at Glasto, absolutely immense. Seeing Oasis on Sunday at Wembley, sure to be fantastic. Why not embrace the whole britpop era and just say they are both fab. end of.
James Wilsher [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:37
You don't have to be a brain surgeon to realise that Oasis write good songs where as Blur pushed music forward and off into many other directions. Blur showed they could change their sound/image to suit their maturity and interest to their surrounding. Blur also comment on a sociaty that all of the UK can recognize, while Oasis write songs that go well with beery nights and post club fights.

Douggie [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:52
I love them both the same but liam is the better singer and coxon is the better guitarist
audrey [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:55
blur are intelligent smart arses which is why they will always be the choice for intelligent smart arses, whereas oasis' first two albums were great, the following umpteen was monkey music for builders
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:56
Blur is absolutely better
Stu [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:58
Don't really like getting involved in all this but I have seen both bands many times and I must say that out of the 10 times I have seen Blur they have never ever let me down. They always give their all and are a fantastic live act. OAsis on the other hand I have seen about 9 times and yes 3 of these times they were amazing but the other 6 shocking. Their live shows now are dreary, they play their music far too slow and have no passion whatsoever. In terms of albums, songs etc I again would have to nod my head towards Blur who have continually re-invented themsleves. Listening to songs from the 90's they have as much relevance now as they did then - perhaps even more when you isten to stuff like the universal etc. Oasis on the other hand just play the same old sh*t on every album - don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the last album but I played it for a couple of months and now it doesn't get a look in. So in conlusion Blur defo better value for money but I wont get in the argument of who is better because that is just a point of view and down to personal choice - my personal choice is BLUR! but i think Oasis are alright too...ish.
Superbeak [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 16:59
How can they even be compared really? They both offer a totally different sound and style.
Bails [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:00
Both amazing bands. But I've always preferred Oasis and that gig with the power failure was still a massive success. Another debate - better guitarist - Coxon or Noel?
Grant Saucier [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:02
I think blur are the better of the two. I think they are much more innovative and creative. Though I must say I've not been as open to oasis through they years mainly because I think they are a bunch of twats. They've got a few good songs though. But in my eyes Blur blow them out of the water
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:06
Oasi all the way, even there b-side's are bettet than most band's best work
Kelsey [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:09
Oasis will always be the better band. Live forever!
Besty [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:11
Oasis were brilliant to start with, then tailed off. Blur started off decently, got brilliant, and stayed there. I've seen Oasis far more often then Blur, but don't care if I never see them again. Saw Blur twice in the last couple of weeks and they were fabulous both times. If it were a football match I'd say Blur 4-2 Oasis. But it's not Blur are better though
Michael [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:12
Luke Lewis is the worst journo the NME have, although not as big a c___ as Fergal Hunter
John [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:15
Blur are the better band. Always were. Oasis are still trading off their first two albums.
rick [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:17
i've always prefered blur, oasis might be better songwriters, but live, i think blur and just more entertaining
Mike [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:18
I like Oasis a bit, but the gallaghers are fucking annoying, especially Liam. Blur are the better band I think. But I also agree with what Sufjan is saying, don't start all that bullshit again.
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:22
blur=oasis
Twinkie [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:22
I am a fan of neither band. However, I am a fasn of music and musically Blur are the better band. They are more dynamic and experimental in their sound without alienating their audience. Oasis have been pedalling the same music for their entire career. By the way, the entire concept of a 'war' between these two is just dumb. Anyone who remembers this in the mid-nineties will probably recall how stupid it was - except, of course, for the imbeciles who got caught up in it all - namely, the fans.
Tommy Tank [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:28
I’ve always been a neutral. However, the Fact that Blur have the same Line up since they started out has to stand for something, Oasis are not the same band they used to be I lose count of the number of changes they have had (Liam and Noel alone are not a band). They haven’t matured musically (as we will see at their gig tonight) they rely heavily on their first two, and only decent albums. Blur were simply Awesome live last week. I’ve seen oasis a few times, and they have never got a crowd reaction like Blur did at Glastonbury! I think that Oasis need to take a long break (like Blur did) if they really want to become legends in this Industry, truth is a lot of people are getting bored of Oasis!
bryan [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:30

Shanky! [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:32

Zig [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:43
Blur, technically better band. Oasis - they've got... something. Brian Powell up there ^ put it perfectly. I'm on the Oasis camp all the way.
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:44
Blur, by a long shot. Blur have the better songs, are better and more energetic live whereas Oasis have a handful of great songs, they have in my opinion produced more shite than gold, and they're boring to watch live there is no stage precene no envolement of the audience (If you saw Blurs Glasto performance it was a matter of moments before Albarn had got the crowd envolved.) also Liam can't sing, Noel is a piss poor guitarist at best whereas Coxon is not far off a master at the art of playing guitar. Blur win.
[Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:44

Blur's best work was from 'blur' onwards and Oasis's was everything up to 'Be Here Now'. Modern Life Is Rubbish is great too though. Oh, and Parklife. It's definitely blur today and with hindsight but I'd have said oasis in 1996.
Noel [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:55
OASIS!!!!!
George [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 17:56
To quote Alice Glass at the Hyde Park gig "Oasis have AIDs"
soph [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 18:00
oh Sufjan, yaaaaaaaaaawn. pipe down, this is a great debate. I am going to get involved AND enjoy great music. Blur all the way. Although looking forward to seeing Oasis tonight.
Liam G [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 18:01
Cleary oasis are better , More albums sold, more stadium sells out, and be goin for nearly 20 years....Blur havn't got 1 good song sorry. Even Oasis B sides are better than their A tracks LOL
Sammm [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 18:04
As a relatively young person, I wasn't into music at the height of Britpop. Therefore, with the benefit of hindsight, and without being caught up in whatever phenomena Oasis caused, I can see that many of their songs resemble the Status Quo fronted by a leering Mancunian. Mostly boring Midtempo rock, with a couple of decent pop songs. they don't "rock" they lumber. On the other hand, Blur are more exciting, musical, their lyrics mean things, and looking the band and Damon Albarns recent ouput, way more creative. Can you seen Noel doing something like Gorillaz or The Good the Bad and the Queen? 15 years of Oasis progressing as a band has bought us "heyyyyyyyy layla" and "The Shock of the Lightning".
Kev [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 18:05
Oasis . Yes, their music hasn't progressed onto different levels, or re-invented themselves - who cares !? They make good tunes. It's easy for people to come on here and slag off the Gallaghers for living off the past; but if it's as easy as those same people make out - why can't other bands sell the volume of records they do, or fill the stadia they do? Seen them live in Edinburgh recently, and they were better than ever.
Sufjan [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 18:06
I am full of rage and quiet unseething indiscretion at the fact that you petty, meaningless fools are still gabbling over this fabricated conflict, conflicated and created by NME; or should that be, New Musical EXCESS?! Aha. Such wit and class I possess, much more than you mindless drones. Learn the truth behind the Blur and Oasis battle of the 90's, people - it cost 7 UN troops and one penguin from Argentina's lives! The truth is out there! 2012! Down with your mindlessness! Jose [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 18:39
No competition for me. They're both completely different to one another. I love them both for different reasons and don't prefer one to the other, all depends on which mood I'm in to which band I put on my stereo. Go Blur and Oasis!
RB [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 18:39

Oasis. Definitely.
Liam [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 19:16
Blur! I liked both but Blur had their own style. Oasis just copied Beatles and their music doesn't seem to change much in style. Blur had the Britpop sound for parklife and great escape then they changed on albums like 13, Blur (self titled). Blur all the way!!!!
Dave T [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 19:17
Oasis haven’t matured musically.. Blur have and you can tell this from their albums Enough said!!
britpopislove [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 19:20
blur is not only a group of much nicer, better looking men, but much more deserving of their fame. oasis can make songs that get stuck in your head, but blur makes songs that give you goosebumps, and wonder how a band can be so brilliant.
Tana [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 19:25
I have to go with Oasis. Blur has some VERY good songs, their music is excellent, but I absolutely hate their vocals. Id rather listen to Noel signing over Damon anytime. That, together with Oasis catchy tunes and great lyrics make them win by FAR.

silentbob69 [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 19:33
I would like to say to people who say that Damon's voice live was terrible. Surely we cannot forget Oasis on the Brits a couple of years ago...that is the single worst vocal performance I have seen on TV!! It even makes Paul 'Hi De Hi' Shanes' Pebble Mill vocal sound like Pavarotti... Both bands are good and I don't really see the point in this going on anymore...why not Supergrass v Pulp, Elastica V Suede. Let it Lie!
thenewwhack [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 19:35
OASIS any day. Earliest memory's singing to Roll With It. Always, always loved them. Blur are okay but Oasis are amazing.
George-O [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 19:45
Noel Gallagher's the better guitarist but Blur are the better band, I reckon.
Calvin [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 19:54
Has to be Blur. so many different style and sounds. No doubt Oasis have some tunes, but most of them sound the same. Also, the fact theyve sold more albums/played more shows may have something to do with the fact blur werent together for a while... maybe?

seen both bands at small venues in early days to bigger venues more recently all over UK, my daughter has now followed me watching them and loving them both all over again, BOTH DIFFERENT CLASS! just wish they would BOTH do arena tours again for a new generation as well i.e. brighton centre, brixton, manchester apollo, (hopefully POMPEY), Love em both! Meanwhile KASABIAN are TOP of the pile at the moment! Hope they stay in the smaller arena's

There's something fascinating about how this old debate empassions everyone after all this time. Whilst Oasis have clearly sold more records, Blur on the other hand have been on a journey with their music. Listening to them now, they still sound fresh and exciting never predictable and bland. They have probably benefited from their hiatus, where as Oasis have continue to hash out music that hasnt moved on much from the 90's. Both great bands but for me Blur are true musicians and their music often underrated is some of the best by a British Act ever. And if we are talking Guitarists, thats an easy one Coxon rapes that guitar whilst Noel just strumms. Peace out
Daniel [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 21:00
Blur aren't bad, but OASIS were, are and will be the best band in the world.
Anders [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 21:08
If your answer is Oasis, you're an idiot. Blur is a far better band, Oasis is the fave band for people who kinda like music, they sound like a bar band. Will never understand UK's love for Oasis. The rest of the world knows Blur is better. Maybe it's a pub thing.
Zeca [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 21:16
Oasis are a rock band. Blur are a pop band. Oasis have the best songwritter ever. Oasis have the best frontman and singer ever. Oasis sold more records and sell out more stadiums. Oasis are on the top for 15 years against all the people who want to let them down. I respect Blur and their fans but Oasis is the best rock band in the world.
Zeca [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 21:18
And it's not just in UK that people prefer Oasis. You go to continents like South America, Asia and countries like Portugal, Italy, Spain and everyone likes Oasis.

Oasis forever.. and I think Oasis are not to be compared to such band.. Blur got their style and Oasis got theirs... I think they are able to influence many bands ...SO...Oasis did make a change to music... they were able to carry their own influence and produce masterpiece songs.. Rock on Oasis...you did it..you are still doing it... peace :D

casper [Visitor] //July 9 2009 at 22:27
why the hell do they even compare the two?? oasis are a slightly dreary rock band, blur are a good alternative band with varied influences clearly. blur hands down though.

Oasis - outside of the UK blur is a one hit wonder (song 2). and the only reason it broke is because it sounds nothing like any other blur track. Oasis is a world wide decade spanning phenom!

Lets face the true fact Blur are a 1 hit wonder ... Ask yoruself this .. can you name every track of one of there albums with out looking on the net ? Oasis don't need to reform to make themselves BIG again.. it's like a relationship.. If I ignore my gf for a day .. she wants me more then next.. then if I do it again she'll dump me.. just like Blue fans will do after they realese there next mediocre album... People always want what they can't have.. which is the game blur had to play to make themselves feel wanted. Granted Alburn did some crazy shit with monkeys.. but he's not someone who fills you with inspiration about music. How many up and coming bands go " I grew up listening to Blur .. they shaped my youth and made me pick up guitar " Oasis are an evolving band.. look at the transition from the first 3 albums to the ones now ? Oasis are the best band of the last 15 years.

Blur are a good band. But they'll never ever come colse to matching oasis for emotion and musical power. So what if they keep changing their sound - who cares. Blur have nothing to compare to the Oasis classics and even blur fans in their heart of hearts will know that

Oasis are the better band, more charisma, humour and better music. At heaton park june 6th it was amazing, scoutsers were united with man united + city fans, which is VERY unlikely in the riteous city of manchester, but they were united to one thing and that was the sound of rock n roll star and lyla, which are both from different decades - and were both equally massively appreciated by the crowd of 70,000. I bring charisma up - Oasis were hilarious at heaton park, demanding that the pie and mash be changed to chips + gravy was hilarious, + the jesus joke with the keyboard player. Whereas at glastonbury damon asked the audience to say hello to moon, let me make sure you understand that im being sarcastic when i say wow, blur were exhilarating! Blur couldnt write a champagne supernova, dont look back in anger, or anything as crowd exciting as shock of the lightening. sure blur have sing a long songs, but Oasis have life changing songs! Personally i have never got bored of any Oasis album, + people can say theyre past it or whatever, but when Oasis went through the bad times, they didnt split up like poncey little girls, they carried on and showed they are a lasting force. So what if their voices arent as good live, neither are blur's, and theyre both make different genres. Oasis are a peoples band, the band for the 70,000 audience at heaton park who probably had to save up for months to buy the tickets. Whereas Blur arent. And you can say Oasis want to be and try to be the Beatles, but Noels right when he says if you dont want to be as big as the Beatles then you may as well sack yourself. And what band doesnt want to have the success and cultural impact the Beatles have. Blur moan about life in their songs, but Oasis tell you how good your life can be. Live Forever did save my life, and i feel loved when i hear champagne supernova, and i feel powerful when i hear Morning Glory, and the great thing is when ever i listen to any Oasis album, whether it be Definitly Maybe or Dig out your Soul, i NEVER feel sad or lonely, whereas banging on modern life is rubbish makes me want to feed my eyeballs to gordon brown. So what if Oasis stole guitar riffs, lyrics and hair styles, they made something great out of it, they made me get up in the morning when i just really cba. And be here now and sotsog shit on alot of other people's best work. Blur might be better musicians with the hole gorillaz thing ( which i personally think all their songs sound the same ), but Oasis have better music, personalities and a better frontman. You dont want some boring man who asks you to say hello to the moon, you want atitudial, someone who thinks hes the best and isnt afraid to say it, so what if he offends you, get over it. And people say Oasis' songs sound the same, sorry, but how does married with children sound like lyla or roll with it. How does Slide Away sound like Live Forever. Oasis continue to sell out huge stadiums, and im sure its not just for the first two albums because the crowd went mental for waiting for the rapture. And my other point - Oasis' songs have meaning and power, whereas Blurs songs dont have any of this, they lack personality, thats why. Oasis give a crowd an unforgettable night filled with atmosphere and a sky filled with piss. At their concert liverpool footy fans were united with manchester city + untd fans, which is something that doesnt usually happen in manchester, but they were united by the words of rock n roll star and the pounding beat of lyla and the importance of being idle. Never have people i have never met in my life made me feel so wanted. And i guess in some ways i owe my life to Oasis, because if i was in a fight i wouldnt be humming park life and goin on about dustbin men, id be telling my self yeah, im a rock n roll star bitch. ENOUGH SAID.

I think I've got a crush on Graham Coxon. But I've always been in love with Noel Gallagher. Seriously, they both have excellent songs, with amazingly brillant lyrics. We can actually stop comparing them if they are nt living in the same epoch.. but they are. So, what ? I've seen Oasis live, and not Blur, so Oasis have a special place in my heart, and their stage presence doesnt bother me, they're just themselves & thats cool. Blur's comeback is just great and they prouved they're still talented at glasto! But lets be serious : where is THE blur album, the one who would worth Definitely Maybe or Whats the story morning glory ?

Oasis by a country mile Blur may be more creative or whatever but dont have anywhere near the amount of good songs as oasis and have no classics at all unlike oasis. Oasis will never recreate the heights of the mid 90's and their albums arnt as good now as they used 2 b but a bad oasis album is stil better than a good blur album or most bands around 2day. If oasis make boring music which is too samey and they are just a beatles tribute act why do they sell out stadium shows constantly and sell millions of albums. The fact that turmoil has always surrouned the band and they have never split up shows just how much the public want them around where as when blur split cos they had a tiff no1 really cared that much

toonarmy [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 00:48
Can't believe this shit debate is still going. If you weren't convinced Oasis were the better band by October 1995 you may just give up listening to music. Sure Oasis tailed off after Morning Glory but they still manage a few great tunes every album. After the Great Escape Blur stoped writing pop songs and became a poor man's Radiohead. All of Blurs early stuff sounds dated (Who can listen to Parklife and think "yeah, still a great piece of social commentary"?). The first two Oasis albums are classics, something that can't be said about any of Blurs. And no matter how annoying Liam comes accross there is no one in the music industry more annoying than Damon Albarn and his stupid mockney singing voice. Look at him when the do Girls and Boys live, it's embarrasing

blur is not only a group of much nicer, better looking men, but much more deserving of their fame. oasis can make songs that get stuck in your head, but blur makes songs that give you goosebumps, and wonder how a band can be so brilliant. Couldn't agree more!

Can liam or noel do a backwards roll whilst playing guitar? Blur have an incredible live energy, which makes seeing them live better than listening to a CD. They haven't changed and they can still sing. And their songs have stood the test of time. (see Glasto footage and reviews for a start if you disagree)
Fee [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 01:46
Re: Noel Gallager is the better guitarist. Than who? Graham Coxon is an amazing guitarist, have you heard his latest album. Could Noel play that, I bet not. And Damon can sing! Blur have a chemistry together that works. They complement each other. And I do have respect for Oasis. They have good songs, but not enough variety for me.
IBlameAlex [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 02:10
While Oasis were obsessively and repeatedly regurgitating out something that wasn't even any good in the first place, Damon and the band made music full of charm, wit, tunefulness, fun and emotion. Also, their music managed to progress over time, unlike, as I've said, the lumbering "grooves" that Noel and Liam seem to shit out every 3 years. I can imagine that our neolithic cave men friends would absolutely ADORE Oasis, but, for music that actually represents something beyond smashing in some dickheads eye on a night out and drunkenly chatting up ugly girls, anybody with half a brain cell will pick Blur. But hey! Some people love what a user aptly called earlier 'Monkey music', made by (could very easily be) brickies for brickies.

After what I saw last night, Oasis should yet again copy The Beatles and stop playing live. They were AWFUL!! And regarding the Oasis V Blur debate, while no can argue that Oasis were bigger, there is also no argument that time has proved the better band of the two was Blur.

frentury [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 11:02
I will try to be as honest as I can. First, let's get one thing straight-this 'storry',that Oasis haven't released a good album after the first two is the biggest BS story in music today.I remember when Heathen Chemistry came out i listened to it without skipping a song for about 45 times in two months-something and enjoyed every second of it.And it's not the best album they've released after the first two. They're last one is a joy to listen to-the keyboards in The Turning, the sounds of Get Off Your High Horse Lady, the tastefullness of the last two tracks...So that hole story about making two good albums is horse Sh.-the first two albums were brilliant, but there was very good stuff after that also. But i have to agree about Blur beeing more creative in terms of changing they're style(sound?not sure about that) and that they sound probably more fresh sometimes and have some wonderfull music released(well,a lot in fact). It's just what bothers me a little is that people start to use this argument, 'Blur had developed more' to say who the better bend is.Not so sure.Do you care about who changes more,or who's music you enjoy more?I would say the second is more important,by far. Anyway, two Great bands, but my choise would be Oasis.
snedros [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 11:03
whens the last time blur made music?? all this jumping on the band wagon of comebacks to boost your bank account is just ripping of the fans..at least the gallagher brothers put out knew stuff for people to enjoy and have worked hard for many years to keep it all going ..they now deserve a little rest, but blur I mean really..they will take the cash from this little tour dissappear and comeback again in 10 years to rip the public off again
George [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 11:06
I saw Oasis at Heaton park and they were immense, on top form. Then I saw Blur in Hyde park and they were just as good, probably edging it because of the emotion of the occasion. Then I saw Oasis last night at Wembley - it wasn't sold out, it sounded rubbish - they looked like theyd rather be somewhere else... So, better band - Oasis. Best band live - Blur (because they give a shit). The end

danabnormal [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 11:37
blur are one of the very few britpop bands ever. Oasis...completely different. Damon always knew that the two bands were completely unlike each other. Oasis are a bunch of vicious bastards who take evrything too seriously and have to have the last word in the argument. They write some outstanding songs and produced possiblythe greatest album of all time (What's the Story..) but blur have class, they write better lyrics, their singer can sing, and they are all round better musicians. Most people on this blog will either say they like blur or both. It is impossible not to like blur. without doubt the most influential british band of modern times

Come on now - Blur have a far better back catalogue and didn't find themselves writing a range of poor imitations of songs. I've seen both in the past week and Blur won hands down I'm afraid. Even with the Oasis spectacular lighting and video, blur's gig was more exciting. My best bits of both gigs were Parklife and Don't look back in Anger - it's great seeing 90,000 fans all singing in disharmony!

Every Oasis song is a classic. At a Blur gig you get to hear Parklife, Song 2, Universal, Country House and BLG. 5 classic tunes. At an Oasis gig you get to hear: Rocknroll star, Lyla, Slide Away, Dont look back in Anger, Wonderwall, Live forever, Importance of being Idle, Champagne Supernova, The Masterplan, Falling Down, Outta Time, Songbird, Roll With It plus you get to see the greatest front man of a generation (who hasnt been topped yet) plus one of the greatest songwriters of allllll time. Plus I went to last nights Oasis gig and Blurs final Hyde park show. Both great but Oasis were better by a mile. The songs speak for themselves at the end of the day.

Blur all the way!!!I saw both Oasis and Blur this month in small amphitheaters (France)and Blur was definitely the best.Oasis just did their job while Blur gave the audience goosebumps.Damon Albarn was so happy to be there...I couldn't say the same about the Gallagher's!Blur's music clearly evolved, sometimes I feel that Oasis only change lyrics (it doesn't mean I don't like it).Damon is so creative and not only with Blur.Coxon is the best guitarist to me!

Its a matter of opinion at the end of ther day but IMO blur are the better band and musicians, they still have the original line up, all their albums sound different, Coxon has showed us that he is one of the best guitarist of our generation and has also released 7 solo albums, Albarn is a great songwriter and has showed that outside of blur with Gorillaz, TGTBQ, FIlm soundtracks and Monkey: Opera.

I love both bands. I went to see Blur at Hyde Park last week and saw Oasis at Wembley yesterday. I thought that Blur had a better peformance on the night. However, I still prefer Oasis- to those saying that 'they keep churning out music that sounds the same', clearly you haven't listened to any of the albums.
The New Age Mod [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 12:53
Oasis all the way, their working class lads like me, They sing about things all working class people go through and can relate too, Blur tunes have no real meaning and are pants anyway.
Cnuts in a jar [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 13:00
Guys, this is how it is - Oasis have a far better catalogue of proper rock and roll songs although in recent years ie 1997 onwards they are shite. But Blur on the other hand made a lovely album called think tank that made me Jiz in my pants - who really gives a fu@k!
Anthony [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 13:08
Oasis. Music for plumbers. Blur. Music for thinkers.

Rod, there's certainly more than only five classic Blur tunes. For example, you forgot Girls & Boys, There's No Other Way, Beetlebum and This Is A Low.

oasis did great albums, but not the lasts ones. blur rocked hyde park, glastonbury and will do it in reading. this time, blur wins.
[Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 13:53
the difference is just that blur were developing through time, and when they thought there was no further way to go, they wouldn't go on because of money, and quit. as for oasis - they've just been playing the same catchy tune since 1995 and shitting the world with their disgusting personalities. how can creators be compared to money-makers, i don't understand. ridiculous.

SO, Oasis all the way... I´m mad fer it!

Looking at these comments, i notice, generally speaking, that blur fans can spell, and have a basic grasp of english grammar, while oasis fans can't.
[Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 15:53
blur are a proper band where each member matters - Alex james not mentioned enough here - where oasis are just a duo with a changign lineup of backing musicians. Blur, like all the best bands strive to change and develop and not stay in one place. also noel has shamelessly ripped off countless other songs to put his own ones together AND writes the most trite lyrics. 'cannonball' my arse - i can;t see anyone relating to that song working class or otherwise.

A few things I would like to clear up. Sye - I think your comment shows complete ignorance about Blur and their fans with commants about how nobody knows any of their songs or albums and to suggest that they broke up in order to make money now is ridiculous. The fact that Think Tank was a number 1 album shows that even without Graham they could easily have continued to make records and milk more money if they chose to but they did not and have always shown great respect to their fans. Loose - You must have been on another planet recently after saying that Blur couldn't have played to 70,000 at Heaton Park. They have just played to 110,000 at Hyde Park and I'm sure they could have sold even more if they put on another date. Also, if you think that Blur don't write songs with meaning and power and lack personality, you really need to listen to some songs like Battery In Your Leg or No Distance Left To Run and I'm sure you would realise that you are completely wrong about that. Tfinz - I'm sure Blur could play to a sold out Madison Square Gardens and in fact Alex James recently said that they were offered the chance to play there this year but they turned it down because they wanted to see how they felt about the other gigs they had booked. I won't go on any further cos otherwise I'll be here all day. I think you can see that I clearly prefer Blur, but I also like Oasis too. I agree that it is rather harsh to say that all of Oasis songs are the same, but for me the range of styles and progression that they made mean Blur come out on top for me.
Dmytro [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 16:29

I think by far Blur have been/still are far more adventurous than Oasis, I mean they've been churning out the same stuff since 1995, but Blur have constantly re-inventing themselves since 1995. It's irrelevant that Oasis have made more money, Blur have far surpassed them in terms of creativity.

2 different kind of backgrounds, 2 different kind of music, 2 different kind of lyrics, 2 different kind of relationship with fame & succes. no need to compare them. I feel lucky to be living in a time where both bands are still going. And I know that one day, all there will be left are records & memories. I more listen to Oasis and I love them but they're really both great bands so why can't we just let them make music and everybody can decide which band they prefer?
Don't Care Because Britpop Sucks But (SUFJAN) [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 20:17
Love Live Forever. But that's it. Oh, it also sounds exactly the same as Wonderwall. And I can't get into the rest of their music. They just seem slack and mediocre, so completely uninterested in what they're doing. Is Liam even aware he's singing? Doubt it. Go listen to the chorus of Girls And Boys or Parklife and listen to Damon. He really gives it his all, he's a lot more intelligent, the music speaks leagues more than the distorted drudgery Noel perpetrates.
Tara [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 21:28
after having seen them both for the first time in the past 2 weeks, I would say blur are a better live act - damon was amazing with the crowd and came down off the stage and generally got the crowd going. Oasis on the other hand have a lot more hits and 'big' songs but in my opinion, were not as good live as blur.
Tina [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 21:39
Saw Oasis a few years back in Las Vegas at the House of Blues when they were supporting Don't Believe the Truth. Great Show! However, I love BOTH Oasis and Blur and hate having to pick who I like better. Oasis is more of a traditional Rock act. They kick out the jams. Blur is more poppy and more experimental and take more artistic risks. Love them BOTH!

OpinionatedTruth [Visitor] //July 10 2009 at 23:12
For every truly epic and transcendent Oasis tune there are 3 good to very good Blur tracks. But Oasis songs have always seemed much more profound and meaningful. I've been listening to both bands quite relentlessly as of late, and i can't seem but shake the impression, that with exception of their most recent material, Blur's "classics" just seem dated. They sound like a fond memory of something that happened 15 years ago. Blur songs don't define the nineties, but their sound personifies them. Oasis tracks however, might as well have been written in 1969, or yesterday, or 20 years from now. I just can't fathom how people can compare tracks like Girls and Boys, Country House, or Parklife with bona fide classics such as The Masterplan, Live Forever, or Champagne Supernova. I will admit that Oasis' latest efforts have been far from impressive: SOTSOG, HC, and to a lesser extent DBTT seemed like lackluster efforts, but DOYS truly restored my faith in the boys; It truly has an immediacy not present in an Oasis album since Definitely Maybe. Even the bonus tracks (especially Liam's Boy with the Blues) are testament to how great Oasis can be. All of you go on about how Blur is better because at least they try to modify their sound, and honestly, I couldn't care less about it. Truth is, Oasis defined and inspired a generation. Oasis songs are a pivotal and seminal aspect of British culture; songs like Wonderwall will always be heard at football matches, schoolyards, funerals, weddings, etc. And it's on that basic emotional level where Oasis truly takes the cake. Those who say songs like Wonderwall or Stand By Me are pub songs are either retarded, in denial, or truly missing the point. Truth is, (and as much as I hate to say it) not since The Beatles has a set of songs and a group of people been so entwined and ingrained in British culture. So yes, Blur may be good, but Oasis, despite the egos and scandals, will always be great. On a side note, my friend went to a gay bar and she told me that they played Girls and Boys. Teehee.

Blur hands down. Oasis are pretentious prats (sp.? - I'm American) - every time they open their mouths it is to say something obnoxious and whiny. I have enjoyed Oasis music in the past, but they spew such toxins, and Blur are just the opposite - sweet and sincere. And, of course this comes out in the music. Blur all the way!

for me it has to be blur. they have proven ability in reinventing their sound and 'The Spinning Top' and Gorrilizas prove that they are more than just britpop. Whereas, to me, Oasis are just repeatedly making the same songs, but getting gradually worse at it. I'd rather Coffee and TV than The Shock of the Lightning (first blur and oasis songs that came to mind) any day. Here's hoping blur make a super new album to prove it once and for all :)

Oasis, as they are more than a band, they're more like a football team and no matter how good or how shit they are, they'll sell Wembley in 2 hours. They are the propper rock and roll outfit, they sell records, sell out venues, have more drummers than the Scots Guards, push up the circulation of the NME when they're in it. Blur are cool, but they fell off the radar at Think Tank and the posh boys wanted to go solo. Cheerio.

If Oasis had never released the first two albums, they definitily would not be talked about in the same way. Could you imagine them being heralded as legends just based on the release of Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants? Blur on the other hand have got better with time. Yes, their first two albums may not be up to the standards of Definitily Maybe or WTSMG? but from Parklife on they definitily surpassed Oasis with every album. I'm not too keen on tracks like Parklife and Country House anyway, which Oasis fans always talk about as the reason they for Blur being second best to Oasis. In just one song, Trimm Trabb, Blur displayed more talent than Oasis would ever be able to do. And people argue that Noel is a voice of a generation, but have you heard digsy's dinner? Even the lyrics to Champagne Supernova mean fuck all. I would really like to be able to enjoy Oasis, but I get the impression that they don't feel as if they need to earn anyones respect anymore and so they just put out an album as an excuse to tour the old songs... Also, people have to stop comparing Oasis to the Beatles, they may be fans of them but they sound nothing alike. Strawberry Fields Forever vs. My Big Mouth?

Blur....have songs but not much else.
Oasis [Visitor] //July 12 2009 at 19:27
Also may I point out that oasis have played AMAZINGLY WELL in their recent wembley stadium show. I know because I was there. As the old saying goes: Blur won the battle, BUT OASIS WON THE WAR!!!
alice [Visitor] //July 12 2009 at 19:33
i think that blur are really great, i love all the songs they have , but i also love oasiss and also like all the song of them, so whats with the fans who love both bands??
tevesy [Visitor] //July 12 2009 at 21:32
Oasis are absolutely shocking. One sound that they've kept the whole time and which is terrible lad rock. Blur are one of the best pop bands of all time.
The Indie Kid [Visitor] //July 12 2009 at 21:35
Oasis defined a generation, they wrote the songs for the 'working class'? I dont understand that. But what I do understand is that Oasis have alot more chemistry to them: The two main people in the band are brothers; every album theyve had has been number one (just thought that was worth a mention ;)); theyve been through a bus full of band members, but in the end the Gallaghers are still together, cause in the end all they care about is the music, they might not show it, but hey, they're Rock & Roll Stars. *(Oh yeah and Blur are alright)
viktor [Visitor] //July 12 2009 at 22:25
blur!!!!

Randy Gallagher [Visitor] //July 12 2009 at 22:48
I am the unborn Oasis. BLURRR FTW NEGAAZZZZZ
[Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 00:01
I feel like those that slam Blur and commend Oasis have never really listened to Blur too much. There is a lot to be seen in Blur. I've listened to a lot from both bands, and Oasis has never taken me in as much as Blur, who have always been so full of talent and innovation throughout their music career.
Greg [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 00:48
Of course Oasis is better band.
David de León [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 01:43
Oasis is Better =)
[Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 01:53

d.albarn [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 02:20
oasis are just better than us! get over it :(
[Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 02:49
oasis all the way, no contest
Lily [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 03:26
Oasis. Blur are good, but Oasis just have better songs IMO. Oasis are amazing in concert and I want to see them again so bad!!
Irish music fan [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 04:02
What a stupid, pointless and dated debated. Blur and Oasis are both great bands. There is no feud and let's face it probably never was. Great to see Blur back!
zoe tf [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 05:17
i preffer blur, i think they are more inovative and creative, they are out there to entretain people and can pronounce a sentence without the word FUCK or FUCKING being said more than 20 times. Oasis just have catchy melodies(which are all the same) ill give you that, BUT Blur is different and has grown so much more, they are at a completely different place than when they started off. Blur all the way
Biz [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 08:10
Blur annoy me because like radiohead, they always try to 'challenge' their audience by changing their sound and trying to be all complex and make them sleves look smart, when all they are doing is allienating themselves from their fans. Oasis all the way.
Jimbot [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 08:55
Oasis- Blur have some belting tunes too though. I say give both bands sticks and let them sort out themselves!
~X OasisMad X~ [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 09:35
OASIS, definitely oasis noel gallagher is so kewl
Voltron [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 10:54
Seriously folks - music is art - its not there to be argued over. Its there to be appreciated - Catchy or not - a good tune WILL hit you on an emotional level. Simpley Both can co-exist! Use your ears and not your mouths this is not a war!!!
[Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 10:59
To the twat who said Blur are only popular because they moved the release date of Country House to coincide with Roll With It - you don't deserve to have your opinion counted in this poll because you are obviously clueless on the subject. It was the other fucking way around!! Blur were the biggest band in Britain after Parklife and had a few albums under their belt and had built up a big fanbase; Oasis had just started - it gave them a boost; even Oasis themselves have admitted this.
shaymin [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 11:00
bluer
[Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 11:08
Surely in the sense of 'the old saying' - 'Blur won the battle but Oasis won the war' that kinda proves that Blur are the better band; they moved away from all that tabloid nonsense, outgrew it and wrote their best album... yet Oasis and their fans can't take it that they lost the one 'battle' that both bands actually willingly participated in, and know they can't do the old 'great next album' card, so have to keep grappling qith the age-old 'battle' while Blur surpass them creatively and make fools out of all the moronic Oasis supporters this way - through better music, not by cheap lines in the press. It's about being a band - about music and live performances - and Blur put their heart and soul into both, Oasis feel they have to rely on clothing lines to make their cash. And for the record, Blur went to comprehensive, not public school, but why not assume they paid for their education just because they obviously made more out of it, eh?
scroobster [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 11:09
BLUR BLUR BLUR BLUR!!!!!!! not only are they a million times more gooder they arent a bunch of arrogant prats
Rob [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 11:58
Blur.......Look at how innovative each band member has been since the 'heydays' of Britpop...Oasis? Just more Dad Rock. Status Quoasis. I like both though, but Blur just edge it. Shame on you NME or trying to whip up yet another 1995 style media created 'war'.
Ben Wells [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 12:38
Oasis are one of the greatest bands ever. Blur are nothing. Oasis made a pretty good album last year. Blur's last album was years ago and it sucked. Noel and Liam are gods. Damon's a twat. Blur try to cash in on whatever music is trendy at the time. Oasis make the music they want. Oasis mean it. Blur are cynical.
Oaaaaasis [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 17:49
Oaaaaasis. And to those who say that the lyrics of supernover mean fuck all, then to you I say, "you're dumb."
Goda [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 17:55
Definitely Oasis. And I truly don't think I need to give the reasons, why.
fromecuador [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 21:33
Blur is far better than oasis. oasis really need to move on and try something different. their last album was just more of the same. blur are way more innovative than the gallagher pricks
[Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 22:19
"Blur try to cash in on whatever music is trendy at the time"This shows is the single most ridiculous comment so far. They clearly did not.At a time when american grunge music dominated Blur released Popscene and Modern Life is rubbish to start a new scene and stay as far away from the american aspect of it as possible. Not only that, but their self titled album in 1997 was a complete change of direction from the "britpop" scene that they are still to this day branded with, despite the fact that they are so much more than that. And can you tell me which trendy music they were following with 13 and Think Tank?I thought not.I think you need to get your facts straight before making such statements at least a fair amount of Oasis fans have made their case with coherent and understandable reasons.
Me [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 05:33
I'm impartial in the debate, but I much prefer Dig Out your Soul over...oh, that's right...
Ogi [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 10:20
Three bands have changed the face of the nation in the past 45 years - The Beatles, Sex Pistols and Oasis. Blur is simply a pseudo-arty-poppy drag. Sorry, lads - Oasis all the way
Carlos [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 14:15
The worst Oasis song is better than any song ever done by Blur. Well... except Song 2 (perhaps)
celine [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 16:16
i love LIAM, and Noel is cool..........their music is great..so i will go for OASIS OASIS OASIS X X

Oasis. Blur: are shite (once again).
will [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 20:06
Oasis have been flogging the same horse for a decade. I feel Blur are more diverse and are the better band
James [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 20:12
Look up the term, "Mockney" on wikipedia and see what you find. Honestly, the only time that the word Blur has ever appealed to me musically is when it's followed by the line "you've got a head like a ghost train." The fans'll know what i mean. Til then.
lindsey [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 10:00
Blur is by far the best band of the two. The only reason oasis had more airtime over the years is due to them not pissing off and giving us abreak from looking at their miserable mugs. After all these years Damon and co have still got it and when i seen them at T in the park this year it sent shivers down my spine they were that good. Love for Damon! xxx
Francisco [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 19:43
Oasis #1 , The Verve #2, Blur #3. Enough said.
Sharon [Visitor] //July 16 2009 at 06:18
Oasis don't come close to Blur!
siobhan [Visitor] //July 16 2009 at 10:44
Blur. Hands down.
Ben Wells [Visitor] //July 16 2009 at 12:43
To the visitor too afraid to use a name on my comments about Blur. Much of the 'Blur' album, most notably Song 2 of course was an attempt to cash in on the kind of US alt. rock that was critically successful at the time (Pavement Mercury Rev etc), and to try and escape the critical backlash they faced after The Great Escape disaster. And Think Tank was just an attempt to be a bit like Radiohead. All rubbish.
Conor [Visitor] //July 16 2009 at 19:41
I was a big oasis fan when i first started playing.. nice easy chords, easy lead riffs, simple bass lines, basic drums.. Perfect stuff for absolute beginners imo. What put me off them was, well they never improved or tried anything different (and i would hardly call SOTSOG different, Oasisheads!) Its always pretty much the same song over and over again. Blur are a band I never really listened to until I heard a track by them called 'movin on', an album track from the 'Blur' album. I have to admit it opened my eyes to Graham Coxons unique style of playing, and as i dug deeper into their discography i found that they are a pretty awesome band. Each album is different, styles vary from album to album with the last track of each working as an insight to the next one (album that is). IMO, blur are more 'beatley' than oasis in that respect. Now, Blur were gone by the time i started listening to their stuff but i was lucky enough to catch a Coxon live show in edinburgh a few years back, which rocked, and i was even luckier to meet him afterwards. We had a pint together and spoke guitar, glorious guitar and he wrote me down the method of his 'movin on' solo. A few years later 2008 I had the misfortune of attending an Oasis gig in belfast, at which I was shocked and almost felt embarrassed to own their records. Lucky though, i've just been to see blur at glasto and although they played a very commercial set i was impressed with how good a show they put on. It Blur for me hands down. Any serious musician surely can see that? P.S. If PRS are anything to go by, Westlife are the greatest band of all time.Boke.
Caitilin [Visitor] //July 17 2009 at 14:57
I always found Blur to be smarter lyrically, yeah Oasis did produce some classics but the never really developed where as Blur were always trying new styles and you can hear that through the albums, also I saw blur at hyde npark on the 3rd and it was the best gig of my life :)
YURIY [Visitor] //July 17 2009 at 20:16
I support post #1
[Visitor] //July 17 2009 at 20:54
you must be bored, Luke Lewis. Neither Blur nor Oasis for me.
JimmyJazz [Visitor] //July 18 2009 at 07:41
Let's settle this using a series of simple album v album face-offs to decide which band has a better back catalogue... Leisure v Definitely Maybe- Oasis win Modern Life is Rubbish v (What's the Story) Morning Glory- Blur win Parklife v Be Here Now- Blur win The Great Escape v Standing on the Shoulder of Giants- Blur win Blur v Heathen Chemistry- Blur win 13 v Don't Believe The Truth - Oasis win Think Tank v Dig Out Your Soul- Blur win I make that Blur 5, Oasis 2... Making Blur by far the better band. See, that was easy! Thank you
baby spice [Visitor] //July 18 2009 at 18:01

Oasis' best albums are the first two, while Blur's best albums are the last two (in my opinion).

Blur are a great band, but Oasis has a better personality.
NME [Visitor] //July 24 2009 at 19:39
I cant believe people are saying blur are more creative and oasis just have catchy songs, so ur telling me "girls, who love boys, who like boys, who dig girls..." isnt JUST a catchy song? as is parklife, and country house, put those 3 choons up against, live forever, wonderwall and morning glory and oasis win hands down, theyve sold more records than blur ever will, and how could blur have changed the world? they arent even known in america, just did a few choons in britain for a while then split up, nothing like the legacy of oasis
[Visitor] //July 29 2009 at 11:23
tough decision-i'd say manic street preachers
