"Glastonbury means an awful lot to me, I would love to play there again," said Jarvis Cocker in The People this week. "We've talked about it, there we go, there'll be a band reunion." He might not have spelled it out explicitly, but it doesn't seem too premature to take this as an admission that Pulp are planning to reform for Glastonbury 2010. After all, he's hardly likely to be talking about The All Seeing I.

Is it a good idea? This is the moment where rock hacks generally tut and whinge and say something like, 'Don't do it, Jarvis - don't tarnish Pulp's legacy, don't give in to the cliché, follow the example of The Smiths/The Stone Roses/Talking Heads and resist the almighty festival dollar.' In this case, though, I'm finding it hard to quell my honest, instinctive response, which is: Pulp at Glastonbury! Fucking brilliant!

Especially if they play this:

continued...

Plus, I know Jarvis' last solo album was pretty well received, but whenever I've seen him live recently , there's been something a bit empty about the spectacle, a slight sense of going-through-the-motions, an uneasy feeling that the between-song quips are now more entertaining than the songs themselves.

Jarvis solo is a marginal figure, whereas with Pulp he always thrived on being culturally front-and-centre: think of the Jacko bum-waggling incident, or the tabloid outrage sparked by 'Sorted For E's And Whizz'. Reforming the band could help return to him to the media spotlight, which would in turn (should he choose to pen new material) refresh and reinvigorate his songwriting.

With Pulp, he excelled at capturing the wonky social mosaic that defines Englishness – ravers, nerds, art-student poverty-tourists. By contrast, as a solo artist he's currently spinning his wheels, writing tongue-in-cheek songs about fucking, such as, er, 'Fuckingsong'. You can't help thinking it's a waste of his talents. Equally, you suspect a Pulp comeback – complete with ecstatically-received Glastonbury set – might just jolt him out of creative cruise-control.

Then again, they might just play 'This Is Hardcore' in its entirety and bore everyone to tears…

Good band but it's obvious cause Blur went down a storm this year that Jarvis wants another moment!

It's hardly a Smiths/Talking Heads scenario. They only split up five years ago or so. It's like with Blur, nice for people who have got into the band in the last five years that they can see them play live, no great event for anyone else. In fact even less of an event than the Blur reunion because from what I understand the Pulp split was pretty amicable, more of a hiatus. That said I'm sure it'd be good to see them back together, as long as they throw in some Jarvis solo songs and stuff from the last two Pulp albums and don't just make it a cringeworthy britpop nostalgiafest

It would be amazing if Pulp played Glasto but, in my humble opinion, they shouldn't just reform for the Summer (a la Blur). In the long-term, it wouldn't result in good press for him, or for Pulp as a whole. They'll be chucked into the box labled "Britpop Revival" and will find it hard to be taken seriously again. So basically, it's all or nothing.

jarvis, the man last year who was too contrary to do the expected with a pulp reformation, has reformed pulp when least expected. legend.

i would cry if they played this is hardcore in its entirety....one of the most overlooked albums of the 90s, though not quite the perfect festival album...

They're not getting back together. http://www.efestivals.co.uk/news/09/091027a.shtml

it's not going to happen, Jarvis has denied it already saying his words have been twisted. I must say though that it would be great if they did. Have never seen them and a reunion and an album would be great news. This is hardcore is a fantastic album too barring 'seductive barry' which is bad and too long. Always a bad combo but I'd still expect sylvia, I'm a man, help the aged and the title track in any setlist. Nice that you put the pink glove song from the glasto song in tho, always one of my favorites especially the line 'wear your pink glove babe he put it on the wrong way!'.

Good! The problem with a Pulp reunion is that the only people who would care probably don't want to hear the 'hits' at a festival. Also who would be involved? Russell Senior should be there for it to be 'Pulp' but what about Hawley? (Never a full member) - Is he likely to step back out of the spotlight and be involved.
Curryman & sharkboy [Visitor] //October 27 2009 at 16:43
Pulp? Back together? that would be fucking awesome, for some reason they fizzled out after the most underated singles of all time (sunrise). i think they have some unfinished business with glastonbury and the fact that Jarvis's solo output is very, very good it wont smack of desperation ala' Verve, Blur, Spice girls, fucking bucks fizz ffS!
Will [Visitor] //October 27 2009 at 17:17
If pulp play glastonbury, ill cry i didnt get a ticket!! It will be incredible!!
[Visitor] //October 27 2009 at 17:19
they're not getting back together. check the validity of the articles you post before posting them. didn;t think nme.com were a one to just regurgitate tabloid tosh (apart from the 'daily gossip' columns)
Heftie [Visitor] //October 27 2009 at 17:29
I ran into one of them (not saying which) only two weeks ago and they said the band never see each other - except for Steve and Jarvis, that is. So : doubtful.
Lee [Visitor] //October 27 2009 at 17:52
I'd love them to reform. I'm going to Glasto and Pulp are easily my favourite act. Sadly I was a bit young to see them before they split so for me it'd be brilliant.
Snugglenolia [Visitor] //October 27 2009 at 20:28
If Pulp played Glastonbury in 2010 it would be the highlight of my decade - my previous being Pulp at Leeds 2000. Jarvis solo is great but there's nothing wrong with a bit of indulgence. An album afterwards would be nice followed by a tour, then by all means bugger off up your own arse for another 5 years! The time is right for this now - and it appears that the only people who don't realise it are the band themselves - someone let them know.
Tomm [Visitor] //October 27 2009 at 23:11
Pulp Are Quality, Jarvis gone solo is waaank! Please reform!
Jamie [Visitor] //October 28 2009 at 00:19
they have had there time it would be good cos they were fantastic the first time around i had the pleasure of seeing them but i really dont agree with these reunions they are pointless to the fact that they are never as good as first time around FACT SEX PISTOLS BLUR NEED I GO ON

I saw Mark Webber (guitarist) at the weekend. He was curating a series of film programmes at the NFT for The London Film Festival. I wanted to ask him about Glastonbury et al, but I didn't have the heart to in the end. It didn't feel right and I felt I'd be rude. He seems happy though. A little tired and frayed around the edges, perhaps, but happy.

God, no. Oh please no. Seeing him bumming round Shoreditch with his head held high like there's something in it of use anymore is enough without this to further delude him and knock us all out of the present scene again. Out with the old in with the new for goodness sake. There should be some law of reuniting bands saying they must write a new hit to get going again. We're just pissing in the wind otherwise.
Pier [Visitor] //October 28 2009 at 05:42
A Pulp reunion would not be a shameful thing, because they didn't have a bad break up. It's not like The Smiths (which I'm sure will never happen and that's fine), the drummer didn't sue the singer and guitar player for a shitload of money. If they do it, I'll be there, it'd be a dream come true.
Dave [Visitor] //October 28 2009 at 10:03
Actually, I'd love to see This Is Hardcore performed in it entirety. It's Pulps Dog Man Star.
Richard [Visitor] //October 28 2009 at 10:52
I saw Jarvis early this year on his futher complications tour he as still got it the only thing missing was the catchy sing a long anthems which Pulp had . I also saw Pulp at Glasto one of the best gigs i have ever attended so i think yes they should play next year surely people have not forgot haow good songs like Babies, Do you remember the first time , Something changed, This is hardcore not to even mention common people.
The Edge's Hat [Visitor] //October 28 2009 at 11:30
A Little Soul...best song Jarvis ever wrote.
Calum [Visitor] //October 28 2009 at 14:53
Luke Lewis, what are you on about? This Is Hardcore is probably their defining moment- the reason Pulp are on a different level to al the other "britpop" bands are because they managed to document the crushing comedown post-96. The singles are nowhere near as good as on Different Class and His'n'Hers, but the album as a whole is a terrific and slightly disturbing journey through Jarvis' mind at that time.
Mick [Visitor] //October 28 2009 at 21:49
Yes, this is true. This is Hardcore kicks some serious ass.
Sarah [Visitor] //October 29 2009 at 20:25
I third that. TIH is an astounding album. Dunno if anyone has noticed this, right before "The Fear" kick in is a note, which is actually the last note of "Bar Italia".
Sandwell [Visitor] //October 29 2009 at 20:55
I personally think pulp are abit boring but whatever, rather them than U2/rolling stones/some other past it supposed "legend" to do glasto
Laura [Visitor] //October 30 2009 at 17:56
YES!.. a million times YES!..
bogoss [Visitor] //November 3 2009 at 18:24
No. when great bands call it a day they should stick to their own decision. because you can't artificially reactivate the past. (I'm french so sorry for the way I wrote...). Except for Oasis if they got back together next january. I would be quite happy :) but it's an exception since Oasis is the King of rock.
