In The NME Office - Behind the scenes at NME - Behind the scenes at NME

David V Goliath, Floyd Mayweather V Big Show, Yoevil V Sunderland in the 1949 FA Cup – history is littered with the kind of momentous underdog victories that make your heart swell up like someone's stuck a bike pump hose in it and pushed really hard on the handle.

continued...

Now we could be on the verge of another, as Glasvegas take on the metal might of Metallica in the UK album charts this week.

So, we know that one band who melt if they wear any colour other than noir will be at the top of the pile on Sunday, but which one will it be?

Glasvegas' debut album has already put the wind up Lars Ulrich's mob, prompting them to release their album early (it wasn't supposed to come out until tomorrow). And at the time of writing Glasvegas' self-titled effort had found its way into rather a few thousand good citizens' shopping trollies.

null

So I urge you, NME reader, citizen, lover of music not mutilated by the fact that it's got a double bass drum pedal pounding away on every song like a haemorrhaging hummingbird's heartbeat, to buy a copy of 'Glasvegas' today.

It is, in my opinion, the best album of the year so far. And do you really want this band to be top of the UK charts?:

Only people that believe in the ancient model of music distribution care about charts. And trust me, nobody will know this new band 30 years from now...
Dan [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 15:08
Metallica is far better than these talentless indie boys. Metallica are one of the greatest bands of all time
Kang [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 15:24
physical sales mean nothing tallica will be no one cos everyone will download it off itunes, plus metallicas album is actual pretty good anyway so deserves then no1 spot in my opinion
Howie [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 15:28
Metallica Number 1 - no contest, no competition
Peter [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 16:04
Metallica are aging old men, Glasvegas have a huge future ahead of them. Will buy the album today!
Najih [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 16:30
Nah.. no band beats Metallica - period!
Mathew [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 16:42
not a lot of clothes that aren't black in either band. glasvegas are pedalling mary chain schtick from 20 years ago and the 'tallica are pedalling the same old metal as they did 20 years ago. i vote for brian jonestown massacre or paramount styles as outsiders for the top spot.
ken [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 16:47
nah, your alright. i'll just ignore this blatant indie shite thank you. not that i hate indie, it's just i've got enough jesus and mary chair LP's and i could use some more metal seeing how the new slipknot was a pure letdown. let's not be phased here: both bands dress in black and try WAY to hard. and plus there are no winners between metallica and glasvegas. x
Jock [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 17:55
You're right NME.Metallica DO give a shit about some bland bunch of unoriginal dullards possibly swiping an English No.1 away from the biggest and best metal band of all time. In their long career, this is what matters most. Get over yourselves and stop hyping up bands way beyond their natural order.Glasvegas have nothing, and never will have anything,on Metallica.
Miggi [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 17:56
Are you serious? Metallica wipe their ass with Glasvegas
Ali [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 17:56
Metallica deserve top. Metallica will get top. Ignore NME, buy Metallica.
adebaflor [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 18:35
you know what nme...i try to follow you but this time i won't. this ain't david vs goliath, this is 'calamity' james vs buffon.the first one wears black clothes. i'm wondering how glasvegas will handle a second album considering that the first one sounds like a forty minutes long song(too similar the songs)...metallica made 5 must have albums in a raw. history....
Justin [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 19:00
The only reason Garbagevegas has a chance for the top is because there is nothing good in England to top them....Until now.
Vasco [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 19:01
Mmm, Metallica are a personal fave, however, I'm not sure if I'm gonna like this new album. Glasvegas are overrated (by the nme) they are good, but there are better bands i.e. Twilight Sad. I'm getting Death Magnetic, however, IF I see Glasvegas' out there I'll also get there, but I don't live in Enlgand so yeaj
Billy [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 20:32
Metallica #1- no question
Elaine S [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 20:33
Mon the Vegas!!!! This album is truelly superb!!:-)
Declan [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 20:49
Metallica Double Bass Kick Glasvegas' Arse!! 'Tallica all the way to the top!!
Ol [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 21:05
Come on the vegas!!. If all you ageing rockers actually listened to the lyrics of songs then you would appreciate bands more. such as Glasvegas!!
ssatyrr [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 21:09
Thanks for making me laugh. As I unwrap my glorious Death Magnetic digipack and put in on the stereo. MUAHAHAHAHA!
Chris [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 21:10
Honestly, who cares? Metallica, i'm sure, don't give a shit. Even if they do what have Glasvegas ever done? No one will care about them in 2 years time...they'll go the way of Franz/Kaisers/Killers...1 good album, then they hit the slippery pretencious slope down. Long live 'tallica. They probably brought 100k of the 120k, to make a challenge of it :p
stuart fi falkirk [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 21:44
fuck the metal heads
Dan [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 21:45
While I wouldn't listen to Metellica if they were playing in my front room and I love the new Glasvegas album I seriously doubt Metellica give a Cleveland Steamer about some indie band from Scotland even if they do beat them to number one.
Josh [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 22:18
death magnetic is one of the best of albums of this century..metallica are one of the best acts ever to grace this earth!!
Jon [Visitor] [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 22:26
Nobody cares about the charts except record labels and 12 year olds. Glasvegas will not go down in history, whether or not they beat Metallica. Glasvegas are generic pop-rock music, whereas Metallica have maintained a unique individuality in a genre where it is so easy to become uninspired and bland (metal). Glasvegas have released the best album of the year so far? That's a pretty bold statement. Even forgetting that you're not being genre specific (we'll assume you mean popular mainstream music), there have been a variety of very accomplished releases from much more talented musicians (Bloc Party, Weezer, Scars on Broadway, Mindless Self Indulgence, Radiohead, Crystal Castles). Lastly, the person who wrote this clearly hasn't even listened to Metallica (a double bass pedal pounding away on every track? Metallica are legends for a reason, because they don't just follow the boring metal archetype).
Stocky [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 22:37
oh no Glasvegas has sold 120.000 copies!!!! I bet they'll beat metallica with 90 million records sold worldwide. eh not. I saw Glasvegas at Glasto, fuck me, they bored the hell out of me. Does it really matter if the UK's number ones will be those glasvegas people? nah dont think so because the rest of the world will have Metallica, not because their new album is a new Kill 'em all, no, just because they are Metallica, and this album is better than St. Anger
Cleary [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 22:49
Glasvegas?? never heard of them! Im 2000% certian that in 4 years time, No one will remember Glasvegas.
Davidian [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 23:04
This is possibly the most pathetic article I've ever read. Who cares who gets to number one? I'm sure Metallica don't, because in 10, 20 or 30 years people will still be listening to Metallica, I can't really say the same about Glasvegas. Even NME will be bored of them in 6 months as they'll find another bandwagon to jump on.
Tom [Visitor] //September 11 2008 at 23:08
This is such a typical NME artical, promoting a below par indie band over true pioneers.
Feriens Tego [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 00:03
And do you really want this band to be top of the UK charts? Um, of course. NME should have learned years ago that pimping and trying to promote a succession of awful indie bands is an embarrassment.
Sean Mcphee From Alloa [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 00:04
Glasvegas Are Awsome One Of My Favourite Bands At The Moment Geraldine Is An Awsome Song =) ;)
Alex [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 00:05
Metallica have far greater music and there is no way that this little not very well known band will beat sales of Metallica's new album released today.
Hamish [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 02:32
Ummmm who is Glasvegas? Never heard of them. ive heard of metallica on the other hand, only the second most successful band ever next to the Beatles. So on that note, do yourself a favour, buy Death Magnetic.
Scott [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 04:52
The fact is Metallica have been around for nearly 30 years. This band survives because they are the best at what they do. I'm listening to the new album now and IT'S AMAZING!! I was getting worried that it was going to be another stAnger. Far from it!! Glasvegas??? No one will know of them in 10 years yet alone 30. NME biased? I think so. Metallica are back!!
GlasWho? [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 07:02
I've already bought 3 versions of Death Magnetic. The digi, jewel case, and the coffin. Good luck to whoever Glasvegas is, but they won't get any help from me.
Ryan. [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 09:45
Glas who? Tallica continue to put out the best guitar music on the planet! I ask again glas who?
Pheel [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 09:54
Glasvegas is surely overrated. Don't know why. That's true - lyrics a good, but whole album is dull and depressing, having only couple of really good songs on it. Metallica will beat them, though I don't like this band
Wayne [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 11:12
As a Metallica fan all i can say is ......... Jamie, did you get bullied by the big boys at school?
JOHN [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 11:19
Is this a joke? seriously...come on. Metallica will have no idea who glasvegas are. They are mere brown stains on METALLICA's great big massive pantaloons. Get a grip NME....Who cares about indie anyway. This depressing monotonous talentless rubbish isn't even in the same league. I'm sure even glasvegas (whoever they are) will have a good laugh at this. There are millions of metallers on this planet and almost all of them will buy death magnetic. Britain can have their Glasvegas cos the whole world has METALLICA!!!
stevie [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 11:24
Glasvegas are a very annoying and cringe worthy band. They sound like the proclaimers on E. They are a complete embarrassment to Glasgow. Im not a big fan of metalica but i will buy there album to spite this disgrace in music :)
Pete [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 11:35
Metallica will be number 1!Fans like myself will make sure of that today! Eitherway, well done to Glasvegas - you've planned this publicity stunt well and you've got at least a few Metallica fans going: "Glasf*ckingwho?"
Tom [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 11:38
This is just ridiculous! You can't stop the Metallica Monster, they would eat Glasvegas for breakfast. get a grip NME.
Paul [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 11:48
Fair play to the Glasvegas lads for the Glaswegian accent and the wee girl on the drums and all that. But really NME? You must be hard up if these are you annointed challengers to Metallica! And what's wrong with ugly men who use double bass drums anyway?
[Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 11:52
trust nme to want glasvegas to 'get one over' on METALLICA. utter nutters...... and fuckers
mtfrankenstein [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 11:53
fuck Glasvegas, don't know'em and don't wanna know'em. Metallica rules!!!
Tommie [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 11:54
Fellow sissies and mama's boys of the world unite. Please buy a Glasvegas album today.
Jamie [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 12:02
Well I'm in. Metallica with their tedious posturing and repetitive songs, or some bright-eyed upstarts from Glasgow? I'll take Glasvegas every time. But I won't be buying it, I've already got the illegal download. I won't be getting the Metallica album even though it's free.
Greenlander [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 12:09
Metallica are a total cliche of a band. Childish in the extreme, see (some kind of monster) for the evidence! Glasvegas are real deal and they couldn't give a flying fuck about chart postitions unlike washed up rockstars who need to feel loved.
Jim [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 12:44
Well i've brought both and quite like both so f*** the lot of ya!
Kevin [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 13:54
Rarely does an album come along that is life-changing. Glasvegas' is just that!! Go out and buy it now!!
Chris [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 14:01
It is official. Jamie Fullerton needs a labotomy. No matter how fresh anyone can claim Glasvegas to be (and that is dubious) it is ridiculous to compare them to musical behemoths such as Metallica. In all fairness, I think Glasvegas themselves would be embarrased at reading that article. They are not in the same league as Metallica. Metallica have been a top metal/hard rock band for over 20 years. The new album has had mostly rave reviews (some people dislike that fact). Glasvegas is just another UK Alternative Rock act. Every year the British press push a relatively unknown UK band, until they are hyped way above their musical capabilities, then fail due to overly high expectations come the second album or next record after the hype. Glasvegas will be no different. Who will know Glasvegas in 20 years?
Sub Arc [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 14:24
Metallica needs a stong effort here to stave off irrelevance. Let's hope this is it. There is much truth in their music and lyrics. Learn more truth at www.subversivearchitect.com
Everyone [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 14:26
Seriously? I just can't understand why anyone would even think of claiming this new band are anywhere near the greatness of Metallica.
scott lomas [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 14:37
Glasvegas will be about for around 2 years or so, Metallica have been going for 25, longevity is the word you're looking for. The new 'tallica album may not be as epic as the BLACK album or anything before it, but, it will still be a decent buy and they are no pretenders, i'd like to see assvegas fill stadium after stadium on a world tour, or even just fill any stadium just once. Wembley july 2007, 60,000 plus fans, screaming word for word relentlessly to every Metallica song, glasvegas will never ever achieve this. thank you.
JSANTOS [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 15:08
These really are great marketing skills... All of the suden a lot of people heard about Glasvegas. This is really great publicity. They are hitching a ride on Death Magnetic's release. As far as I'm concerned they are welcome. It's good to see Metallica's name helping new bands. Now, don't even begin to compare the greatness of these two bands. Good luck to Glasvegas in their carreer but.. hey... stick to your little island and play... DEATH MAGNETIC RULES!!!
JadenUK [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 15:27
I'm sorry WHO are Glasvegas??!?? Am I the only one who has never heard of this trash they call music nowadays? Death Glasvetic!
Sam [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 15:35
Another One Of these with metallica fans, Sadly I dislike metallica. Glasvegas have came out with such a stunning album, It does deserve to be number 1, Stop hogging the limelight, metallica fans. Glasvegas to be number 1. x
Tom [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 15:45
What a ridiculour article how much are Glasvegas paying you? There is no discussion to have, Metallica pee on them from a very great height, whilst laughing and pointing and perhaps throwing the horns!
Francisco [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 15:48
Who's Glasvegas anyway...why i have to buy something of them?...sorry for that, but it's true. No chance to compare two of these Bands, no chance to compare any new band with Metallica.
[Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 15:59
Fuck Glasvegas! What a punch of pussies! Metallica Rules! Metal Up Your Ass!
Mark [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 16:10
I think it's good to see people support up and coming new bands and for this band to be in contention for Number 1 album means they have a good fan base going as well which is good I'm always in support of new bands coming through. But don't go knocking legends that are already there. Metallica are still at the top because they are still producing great music and play phenomenal live shows. I saw them at Wembley last year and it was the best concert I've ever been to. So my point, support up and coming bands but don't knock down legends that are already there because if Glasvegas stick around for a while there will be some up and coming band who will look to knock them down.
Dan [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 16:50
This guy for real?? Really does sum up the NME. Who the frig are Glasvegas anyway. And why on earth do the NME think its going to be better than Death Magnetic by one of the greatest band to have walked this earth.
dawz [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 19:41
fuck glasvegas metallica rule!
RONNIE T [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 21:13
All you metal freaks should go have a wash. Metallica? What a joke!
JB [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 23:29
This somes up everything thats wrong with NME and the rest of the music press.... its not about the music, or what's popular, its who these moron music journalists want to make "cool" and want to write artices about/play on Radio 1, fact is regardless of whether Glasvegas are any god or not, Metallica sell out Wembley Staduium and headline Reading/Leeds festivals, Glasvegas will be playing the Carling... more people will buy the metallica album, whether its better or not, imploring people to buy an album to stop another artist who are synonomous with a musical genre your magazine doesn't like, is petty and pathetic... no wonder Classic Rock Magazine has abigger readership!! Grow up Jamie Fullarton - whoever you are
Mr Metal [Visitor] //September 12 2008 at 23:42
Who gives a crap about Metallica these days, just some smelly old metal band that have passed their sell by date. Metal died in the 80's thank god.
Billy [Visitor] //September 13 2008 at 00:17
Jamie Fullerton (whoever he/she is) is a chump. Metallica rules. Death Magnetic is upon us, and it feels good!
Jo [Visitor] //September 13 2008 at 06:39
choose beauty, choose dark, choose Glasvegas ...the first album proper to be released since the 90s.
metallicarules [Visitor] //September 13 2008 at 13:59
glasvegas drooools!
Elaine from Fife. [Visitor] //September 13 2008 at 14:42
Aging rockers and aging fans should move aside for real music that depicts the noghties and all the shit we live in that we can all pretty much relate to through the lyrics of Glasvegas songs. All that head bopping of Metallica fans and pretend air guitars is pretty sad.....its the same old ,same old from Metallica.
smellyBO [Visitor] //September 13 2008 at 15:01
i can just tell all the stinking metallica fans are sitting 'bashing' glasvegas, while stewing in their own filth. Moan the Vegas! They will be around for another 20 years no doubt!!!
Incey [Visitor] //September 13 2008 at 15:06
Glasvegas deserve to be number one. The album is incredible.
Moan The Vegas [Visitor] //September 13 2008 at 15:09
No competition. Glasvega is just beautiful music. Jamie ure a dude, they'll kick metallic's butt
rob [Visitor] //September 14 2008 at 00:18
metallica=beat metal band in history Glasvegas=peice of shit
Keir [Visitor] //September 14 2008 at 01:53
looks to me like a lot of Metallica fans that never read the NME have descended! I don't expect everyone to love Glasvegas as much as I do, and I could go on forever about why they're great even though I've been generally totally disinterested in new bands for many many years, but the number of people here insisting that they are completely without merit is ridiculous. Hell, they way they're describing them, even Coldplay are better than that.
Rohan [Visitor] //September 14 2008 at 11:49
Assvegas?? We seriously need to clean up our shockingly bad album charts with a bit of metal, and I think death magnetic is the way to do that.
Declan [Visitor] //September 14 2008 at 18:15
"Back Of The Net!" 'Tallica are No. 1!! :)
Shaunathan [Visitor] //September 14 2008 at 21:42
Glad Metallica are number one, having a band who take their name from the youth's nickname for their homecity is mundane. I was hoping for some epic, big band music from Glasvegas, no chance. At least I know where I am with the Bay Area legends...meaty riffs and yodelling, get in!
Andrew [Visitor] //September 14 2008 at 23:33
At the end of the day it doesn't matter who has been around longer who will be around longer and all that bollocks. You can only buy both albums and decide which one is better no matter how long a career a band has they are only as good as their last album.
Nme wtf? [Visitor] //September 15 2008 at 14:23
I thought this was a home for good music, i saw all this "hype" on Glasvegas and had a listen. Its pure stock, its nothing special at all. And you want them to beat a band like metallica in the charts? I am disgusted by this website and the writer of this post. Its people like u that make this UK chart 99.9% of the time screwed
"GOOD MUSIC" FAN [Visitor] //September 15 2008 at 15:26
cmon people, stop sitting in boxes throwing stones at everyone and everything outside your box. i love metallica, the new album is absolutely blistering, a 72minute assault on the ear drums of epic proportions, but I also love glasvegas, maybe its because Im from glasgow and undoubtedly rather biased but they are a fantastic band, sonically they are a breath of fresh air from the generic indie of bands like the courteeners (who i quite like to be fair) or the view (who i cant stand) and their lyrics are clearly passionate, emotive and genuine and they are more capable of pulling on the heart strings than anything ive heard in a long time. To be totally honest im not even sure were im going with this, I just wish people would be a bit more open minded, at the end of the day its only yourselves that are missing out due to misguided loyalties and ignorance!. Long may glasvegas and metallica continue to make music on par with the best moments on both of these albums!
oadiedoadie [Visitor] //September 15 2008 at 20:36
Glasvegas- Already Legendary.
Jonno [Visitor] //September 16 2008 at 18:07
i bought them both so im not arsed
Tbag [Visitor] //September 17 2008 at 07:16
Yeah, well Metallica is number 1, so that's that. Next.
