Bass. Does it matter? You notice when it's not there: witness Metallica's famously bass-free album '…And Justice For All', which has all the sonic warmth of a trapped wasp chewing its way out a flannel.

Then again, stripping out the bass can also prove a masterstroke: see Prince's 'When Doves Cry', or Blackstreet's 'No Diggity'. Klaxons made ironic reference to this seldom-used production trick when they covered the latter song, beefing it up with an outrageous splurge of filthy sub-bass.

Trouble is, playing bass is just not as glamorous, or aspirational, as playing lead guitar. You look at Johnny Marr, or John Squire, or Eddie Van Halen, and you think, yes, I'd kill to be able to play like that. Conversely, you observe the masters of the bassist's art – people like Jaco Pastorius and Pino Palladino, with their liquid, fretless, floppy-fingered ways – and you think, hmm, perhaps I'll leave it.

For the budding four-stringer, there exists a tipping point in expertise, a critical crossroads, beyond which lies only danger: specifically, the howling musical dead-zone that is slap bass. Practice too hard, and you may end up looking like this chap:

continued...

Furthermore, there's something undignified about people who are really good at playing bass - a lingering whiff of gym lockers and sweaty socks. This is mostly the fault of Flea, whose shirtless, dick-swinging antics have implanted in millions of people the subconscious assumption that all bassists are perma-mugging, 'I'm bonkers, me', attention-seeking berks.

But that's unfair. Many bassists exhibit charisma and poise. Generally, the matter is governed by Hook's Law, which dictates that the lower you swing your instrument, the less of a muso bell-end you appear. Hence Nicky Wire: unspeakably cool. Mark King: not so much.

Some bass players, meanwhile, rank amongst the coolest musicians who have ever lived. Take James Jamerson, Motown's in-house bassist who played on an estimated 95% of the label's recordings between 1962 and 1968. A legendary boozer, he recorded the rangily lubricious bass line to Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin' On'' while lying flat on his back, after a marathon drinking session.

Debauchery in itself is not cool (Jamerson's alcohol addiction ultimately killed him), but insouciance, and effortless brilliance, is. In his own way, Jamerson was as 'punk-rock' as Sid Vicious. His armoury was minimal: two fingers, grubby strings (which he never changed), and a Fender Precision Bass with a warped neck. But with those tools he fashioned riffs that have made the world dance for the past half a century.

Indeed, 'What's Goin' On' is instructive here, since it marked the first time Jamerson was ever credited on a Motown release - which perhaps illustrates the bass player's predicament through the ages. It doesn't matter how good you get, you will always be less famous than the singer. And the guitarist. And the drummer. And this fact will haunt you until eventually drink yourself to death, penniless and alone.

But perhaps we can redress the balance now, by celebrating the men, and women, who best honour the bass player's art. Let us pay our respects to the unsung craftsmen who construct the girders and rivets on which rock and roll stands. It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it…

Luke Lewis [Member] //July 31 2009 at 14:51

Kennyken [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 14:55

Michael [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 14:57
Um, this is a popularity contest, only flea and cliff burton are worthy to be up there - what happened to Juan Alderete from the Mars Volta? He plays circles around your 18 other losers... sorry for the harsh words, but come on!
walker [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 14:59
you forgot Jaco (Jaco Pastorius). Otherwise Geddy has my vote.
Luke Lewis [Member] //July 31 2009 at 14:59
A popularity contest is exactly what it is. The Top 20 you're looking at is simply the most recent rankings, based on reader votes so far...
Dec [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:03
Where is John Entwistle????? And seriously, Sid Vicious at number 1? He couldn't even play the fucking the bass, that just shows how clued up the readers of this blog are.
TBC [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:04
Norman Watt-Roy
Simon [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:06
Oust est le Andy Rouke? Bassline to Barbarism Begins At Home warrants a top 10 place alone!
Alan [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:07
Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle and Fantomas, and Billy Gould of Faith No More should be in there!
Luke Lewis [Member] //July 31 2009 at 15:09
OK, thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to add some of these names - John Entwistle, for example - to the rater. Andy Rourke's in there already though
Pedronius [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:10
Can you be famous because of 1 loop ? I think so : Bakithi Kumalo on Paul Simon's Graceland (esp. Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graceland_%28album%29#Credits
The Edges Hat [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:11
Adam Clayton....the wildcard of U2's music...can make seemingly simple pieces work amazingly...see "New Year's Day", "With Or Without You", "Mysterious Ways", "Moment Of Surrender". plus he's cool as f**k.
[Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:16
hahaha nicky wire is not unspeakably cool
Melanie [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:22
The list could use more girls... Michael Steele - The Bangles Joanna Bolme - The Jicks / Quasi Kathy Foster - The Thermals
[Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:32
I gave everyone 1 except Flea, Cliff B and Steve H, who get full marks.
brother jake [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 15:34
Yet another dismal attempt to reduce rock to a popularity contest. So much for the mag which once boasted Swells, Quantick and Maconie. Next week, name your fifty favourite percussionists.
Luke Lewis [Member] //July 31 2009 at 15:36
Don't be ridiculous. Next week we're doing 50 most punctual roadies

Adam Clayton has class written all over him. On top of that..he's a wise sage now but was once the wild child of U2 and married a supermodel lest we forget.
Lee [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:08
Re Hooky's law - I interviewed him for a fanzine in 1988 and asked him why he played his bass slung so low - he said he got the idea from watching clips of Paul Simeonon from the Clash - he said it makes the bass more difficult to play "but it looks good".
Anon [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:12
Where's Jared Followill....?
E Stals [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:15
Being REALLY good at bass is as anoracky as being REALLY good at guitar in my opinion. Who cares? The girls initially go for the best looking one anyway! Look at bands like Fall Out Boy and The Enemy!

Mike Mills of R.E.M., easy. He's the true MVP of the band - his bass lines, backing vocals and piano contributions all add so much to the band.
Boback [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:27
Les Claypool?

Mark Sandman - Morphine. One of the very best
Tom M [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:39

Emmett C [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:45
id like to see Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs, Dead Weather, Greenhornes) in this. hes pretty underrated and is an awesome player. just listen to Attention.
Dressler [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:47
Why no mention of John Deacon? Try to imagine "Another Bites The Dust" and "Under Pressure" without his sick bass lines! And what about Nikki Monninger from the Silversun Pickups? Or D'Arcy Wretzky from the Smashing Pumpkins? There are some glaring omissions here!
r rw visitor [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:47
gotta be JONAS HELBORG at no1 with j entwhistle at no2.
Dressler [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:49
And no mention of John Paul Jones?!?! WTF?!?!
Dennis Blandford [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:50
Every time bass players are rated, its always John Entwistle who comes out on top as he really was a player like no one else ever has been since. Pity so many Who recordings made his playing inaudible, but if anyone wants to hear him at his peak, check out The Real Me from Quadrophenia and Dreaming From The Waist from Who By Numbers - you'll see why other bass players just want to give up and go home when hearing these tracks...! He combined melody with rhythm in a truly unique way.
Richard Thomas [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 16:53
Jah Wobble Charles Mingus Danny Thomson Steve Hanley Phil Lesh

Lewis Fieldhouse [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:22
Paul Turner Nick Fyffe Stuart Zender all these bassist played for Jamiroquai and to do this you must be able to pull anything out of your arse mid set because you never know what the hell JK will play next. the best of the lot has to be his current player tho, Paul Turner. Incredible.
Dave [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:30
Where is Nicky of the Wire???!!! WTF??
Dale Black [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:31
Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller & Victor Wooten...SMV!
linda grant [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:33

Perry [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:34

Dennis [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:44
Craig Adams Of The Sisters Of Mercy + The Mission is missing... and where is Steve Severin of Siouxsie & The Banshees???
Ron The Shelf [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:46
McCartney!!!!???? Wyman!!!! In an era of great innovation these two have to be the most boring and over-rated bass players of all time. Entwistle wins by a mile. From the punk era JJ Burnel, no contest. Honourable mentions for Norman Watt-Roy, Bruce Foxton and Paul Gray from The Damned
Harry P. [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:48
Dave Best of the Pigeon Detectives? great bass player
Matthew [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:48
This article is just plain retarded...this guy clearly has a grudge against musicans..."howling musical dead-zone that is slap bass"?!? WTF...no wonder Victor Wooten and Marcus Miller aren't on this wack-off list of mostly bass "owners" Mike Mills? Seriously!?! And that dig at Mark King...what a douche! The fact that Entwhistle isn't there is enough of a tip-off that this is total BS (not to mention...Bernard Edwards, John Taylor, Jaco, and all the rest...I got tired of looking...was Bootsy there?)...this is seriously a bunch on crap
James [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:50
Chris Wolstenholme of Muse...Hysteria,time is running out and many more of his riffs are amazing. Im surprised he isn't mentioned more here
Sonny-D [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:51
Horace Panter should be in the top 10!!
Sara [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:55
So where is Kim Deal etc or is this poll just for blokes as usual ?
Ricky [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:55
They have a bunch of crap bass players on the list and i'm pretty sure ...and justice for all wasn't without bass. It had bass but you could barely hear it
[Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:58
And what about johnny christ from avenged sevenfold? Scream is a pretty good bass song
Laura [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 17:58
Steve Harris? Where's Steve Harris??
ryan [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:00
JOHN TAYLOR Duran Duran! I mean Rio, Girls On Film, Notorious, and the list just goes on.
Angie [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:01
Tired of a page that takes forever to load...Is John Myung from Dream Theater on here anywhere????? At least Geddt Lee and a couple others are . Why are people voting for fav bands instead of true players?
Hannah [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:01
Where is Jared from Kings of Leon?
Chris [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:06

McCartney without a doubt. "Paperback Writer", "With A Little Help, "Old Brown Shoe", 'nuff said.
Polar [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:08
Cliff Williams AC/DC Duff McKagan Gun N' Roses Paul McCartney Mike Levine Triumph
Darren [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:11
If you would all just LOOK AT THE VOTING SECTION you'd see that plenty of the ones you are saying 'where is..' about are there - Nicky Wire, Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Mike Mills, Kim Deal, Les Claypool..seriously people, wake up. Anyway, the one big omission for me is Tim Commerford (RATM/Audioslave). Also Phil Thornalley purely for 'Lovecats.' We should also celebrate some bassists who are part of super-tight rhythm sections, like AC/DC's Cliff Williams and the Quireboys bassist, don't know his name but I saw them live recently and the bass and drums were solid as a rock throughout. Also should name Bill Black, Elvis' early bassist.
Rog f [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:17
Jaco Pastorius....as any bass playing musician will tell you
Dylan [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:18

Lordnyra [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:37
WHERE THE HECK IS CHRIS SQUIRE?! Also, kids, metal bassists are not good, Geddy Entwislte Jamerson and Jaco are the top ones here, u say otherwise, u got much to learn
ladlenitz [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:38
Geddy is tremendous and got my vote, but this is more of a "who's your favorite bass player?" poll than who's the best. Where's Chris Squire? Not on the list. Anyway, Rush has been riding a wave since "Snakes and Arrows", and I'm glad to see them finally enjoy some mainstream recognition after paying their dues for so long. Not that they seem to care much one way or the other, but as a diehard fan, it's nice to see.
casper [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:42
where is bootsy collins?? and paul mccartney above les claypool? BLOODY OUTRAGE!!!
ollie [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 18:44

bill gould - faith no more. his bass playing on ' The Real Thing ' and ' Angel Dust ' is amazing. very influential.
Jen [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:17
Jack Casady needs to be on this list. He did more than just White Rabbit, a whole lot more.
Jose Cuervo [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:18
What about Wences
Ashish [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:18
This is clearly a mediocre list at its best.. except Geddy Lee every other bassist is just a 'great' bassist.. you want to see some kick ass bass playing try Victor Wooten.. he is in the league where people like Geddy Lee hang out
David [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:23
Justin Meldal-Johnsen ,no need to say anymore than that.
thirdshiftboss [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:31
what about chris squire
chrissybelle [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:32
Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads have once again been shamefully overlooked. Oh, and Jah Wobble - he's in a league of his own.
thirdshiftboss [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:35
what about chris squire and mike rutherford
Mark [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:40
No Chris Squire, Bootsy Collins, Justin Chancellor, Tony Levin, Stanley Clarke, Tal Walkenfeld, Pete Way, Glenn Matlock (the guy in the Pistols that could actually PLAY the bass), Barry Adamson, Pino Palladino....the list goes on...oh dear...
OhioBob [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:40
Could I have missed Chris Squire?
Kevin [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:40
I like Geddy Lee the best, and he does have wonderful chops. Chris Squire used a pick and forever changed how bass could be played. These are musicians serious about their craft. Being a nut is about image, but being thoughtful is rare. These two are such in my opinion. It is only an opinion.
Constant Supply [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:41
Alex James from Blur, fuckin amazing bassist. Krist from Nirvana as well, very underated.
Keith [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 19:52

marbled [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 20:00
Alex James from Blur, For Tomorrow!? Simon Gallup from The Cure, much better player than Hooky. Morgan from Senseless Things (now Muse). Depends what you want from a bass-player though, a good groove and backbone, then every pub up and down the land has a legend in it. Stef Kamill Carlens from dEUS has it for me though when you want to take all aspects into account beyond just playing.

John Michael Richards [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 20:37
Dave Pegg - Jetho Tull / Fairport Convention Chris Squire - Yes and Jah Wobble (John Wardle) - PIL Whilst I have been a life-long fan of my favourite band, Rush, since 1978 I mus conceed that John Wardle outshines all of the above!!
Dave [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 20:48
I think Luke, you've unfortuantely got the attention of the slap bass brigade. The type who put up videos on youtube of them doing flea covers to perfection with thier tops off wondering why they have no life or girlfriend. Macca all the way, its not about how fast you can play his basslines complemented the songs geniously. Listen to I Want You its brilliant. John Entwistle was something else though good to see him at the top. The bloke from Kasabian is also shit hot but i think he will be overlooked.
Magzy [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 21:02

Sam [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 22:44
BOOTSY!! Seriously, though, I would consider Lars K. Norberg (Spiral Architect) and Steve DiGiorgio (Death, Sadus, etc) the best bass players, along with "duh" choices like Jaco and Geddy. They're not the greatest, because greatness takes into account things like mainstream reputation and legendary achievements. But in a contest of pure skill, as a matter of being better than others, these two players could actually in fact outplay everyone else.
Alex [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 22:46
Wheres Alex james of blur! His bass riffs are unreal!!!Should definately be in the top 10
allan [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 22:49
Simon Gallup is a really underatted bassist, A Forest ,Lovesong, Fascination Street are all really good basslines . Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam also deserves mention.

i love nirvana but why the fuck is krist novelic on there twice where is nicky wire? or colin greenwood?
Randomer [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 22:57
Wow, the person who made this article is fucking clueless. FYI: Drummers are the ones who sit at the back unknown Bass is not as pointless as an instrument as you might think, an interesting bassline makes a track listenable If you apply some logic, bass is technically harder than guitar, regardless of whether there are more bassists getting away with playing simple shit Anyway, glad to see Geddy Lee at the top of the list. No matter how good any other bassists are, their basslines don't get much better than Geddy Lee's, and I'll bet my left testicle none of them can play them while singing so well and activating foot samplers.
Mark D [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 23:17
Jason Newstead, the man is god & the reason i have a bass guitar in my house
Keith [Visitor] //July 31 2009 at 23:20
Although there are a lot of unsung heroes, Geddy Lee is great, My favorite is Tommy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band. Listen to the runs on songs like" 24 hrs at time" and other jams. Talk about unsung, and he played with his thumb!

Any list about great bass players that doesn't have Larry Graham and James Jamerson on it is a bad joke. Chris Squire and Squarepusher are both notable omissions. And why the fuck is Kris Novoselic on here? Because he played on Smells Like Teen Spirit? Kris was never a great bass play, and has no business being in the top 5.
Mike Brown [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 01:55
Where the F@#k is Les Claypool on this list should be top 3
Jeff [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 02:02

Drew McConnell. 'Nuff said.

Andy Rourke is the best bassist to walk to earth, whether he wrote the bass lines or Marr did they are still phenomenal. Typical of NME that he aint even in the list...
Elias [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 04:07
Calos dengler de Interpol es muy buen bajista
Sam Spagnola [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 04:12

Odd list. Entwistle, Jack Bruce and Jaco P are all there - as it should be. But Sid Vicious???? He could NOT PLAY. The most utterly pointless 'icon' ever - the poor sod was dead meat while still alive. Where on this list are Tony Levin, Crun Walters (Stackridge) and Chris Squire?

people should be voting for bass playing, not for songs they like, or bands ehty like , bass playing only ,whether u like the music of ehe person or not.
benji [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 13:21
nick oliveri of courseee
Alex [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 13:22
The greatest bass player is probably pastorius but have you ever tried to listen to weather report album - challenging to say the least. I'm a big fan of Mcartney - melodically brilliant in the Beatles (Revolver onwards). Flea is also great on Blood sugar sex magik.
p.j.proudhon [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 13:31
was wondering why no Carol Kaye- session player on pet sounds/smile, spector and most west coast 60's pop/rock type stuff. and why no MIKE WATT. minutemen, firehose etc. also dont know the name of the player but the bass on Gainsbourgs melody nelson is the biz. also Sam Coomes brought a nice melodic touch to the final Heatmiser l.p. ummm and James Jamerson should be at number 1 but as we know there is a gulf between how it should be and how it is. peace and love to all
Colenso Parade [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 13:31

its an absolute crime that tony levine isn't on the list- peter gabriel's bassist, sledgehammer has got to be one of the greatest bass songs of all time
PunkRock93 [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 15:27
WHERE THE HELL IS MATT FREEMAN?!?!?!?!? Maxwell Murder has the greastest bass line ever without exception, he truly is number one!
John [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 15:28
Why isn't Jean Jacques Burnel at least in the top 20? It's voting such as this that make me question whether today's NME readers actually know anything about music. Sure there are a lot of great bass players in the poll, but obviously the voters have no increment of an idea what a great bass player is.
Peter [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 15:38

Oh the poor girls, forever overlooked by the press unless they are obnoxious loud-mouthed cows or cookie-cutter pop wannabes. Melissa Auf Der Maur and D'Arcy, who have eons of class, kept their heads low and their playing amazing. Oh and Kirsten Pfaff, R.I.P

You are talking about a Bass GUITAR! Say so. The best BASS PLAYERS were jazz musicians, people that could READ MUSIC and REALLY play their instrument.

Ocaniawarning [Visitor] //August 1 2009 at 20:38
"people should be voting for bass playing" I kind of agree but I find the writing of interesting/complementing bass lines equally rewarding... therefore my vote went to Geddy Lee who is master at both. (the bass line for The Big Money is monstrously powerful and melodic, as is the line under the song after it... Grand Designs, heck, Power Windows is a great album for rock bass and a great album overall, as are many others of them, okay a Rush fan speaking hear obviously)

Guto Pryce from Super Furry Animals deserves mention. Tim Commerford and Bill Gould should also be here.

Steve Terebecki of White Denim is one of the most exciting modern bassists I've had the pleasure to listen to, he should definitely be represented. And, not sure if he's on there already (he really should be!), Carlos D of Interpol. Ira Wolf Tuton of Yeasayer plays a mean bass too.
Glenn D Wright - Composer [Visitor] //August 2 2009 at 04:05
One of the most under-rated Bass-Masters, is Stuart Hamm (Joe Satriani's band). Have you seen his solos? .. you really should.
