In The NME Office - Behind the scenes at NME - Behind the scenes at NME

So, at long last, the (surely over-ripe by now) fruits of 'Chinese Democracy' have been offered to the masses, with the title track of the new Guns N' Roses album spraying itself all over the radio this morning.

null

continued...

Did you hear it? I was downstairs at NME Radio when they gave it its first spin. "Well, it ticks the boxes" seemed to be the general consensus.

Yup, big riffs, Axl's familiar squeal, most of the original members may have not got within a block of the studio where it was recorded, but this sounds like GN'R alright.

Post your thoughts on the song below.

THANKS FOR SAVING ROCK N ROLL AXL
Antony [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 14:37
I've listened to at least 10 of the leaks that are out there on the net and to be honest Chinese Democracy was the one I liked the least so i didn't expect too much. However, I was honestly stunned at the finished product which blows the leaks away. The layered vocals, guitars, and drums are great, especially if you crank it through good speakers as my neighbours will tell you. As a 20 year fan i've been waiting a while for this album but after this first taste I can't wait to get my hands on the CD as soon as it hits the rack.
Mango [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 14:52
It's one of my favourite new tracks, alongside Shacklers.
KillKurtsKids [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 14:55
It's a decent track. But I've downloaded all the leaks (i heard the live version of this in 2001) and this is easily the weakest of the studio leaks. I can't wait for 'Better' to be released or 'Madagascar'. 3/5... we're warming up to very good album. Just taking it slow... well it's been 15 years!
Dave Clements [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 14:56
I've been listening to the leaked versions for months now ... this new version is filled with more power, more guitar layers, new riffs, powerful vocal lines which have a classic Axl Rose two octave effect, and some hot guitar solos from Robin Finck and Ron Thal (on his Fretless guitar it would seem!). This is a VERY cool release and anyone who disses it is almost certainly going with the whole mentality of "I'm going to bash it because it's cool to hate on Axl Rose". Look, I love the old band more than anyone, but Axl's new thing is still excellent and I am looking forward to this album!
Eugen [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 15:07
so freaking great!
ErEr [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 15:21

Anthony [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 15:43
Fucking brilliant
nalA [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 15:43
Am i the only one that thinks it sounds suspiciously like the rift from the intro of The Darkness' I Believe In A Thing Called Love being played under heavy distortion?
simo [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 15:59
good single...the riff under the song remembers "Appetite..." times and the song is really good..well done..
Callaby [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 16:05
where can you listen to the album version of the track?
Leigh-Rok! [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 16:11
It's amazing to hear the finished product, and what an amazing song! For those that don't know, Chinese Democracy is stacked full of big guns that just keep on hitting you. Big shout out to mygnrforum.com!
darcy [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 16:18
greatest album of this decade is about to be released. glad ive stuck by him all along.
Leonardo [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 16:27
Great song....Axl is back again at the top of his game...still the best at what he does
Calum farquhar [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 16:29
I can safely say.... ROCK IS BACK!
Thiago [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 16:48
Well worth the 15-year-wait? ...
John [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 17:03
I can't believe this is finally coming out. It sounds fantastic!
[Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 17:05
CD will make an excellent record! The production is fantastic
Qtip [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 17:14
http://www.q1043.com/pages/news/gunsnroses/ It sucks - very boring
Carl Andrews [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 17:17
Really good single, the first "in youre face riff" says everything you need and the scream of Axl makes it clear you're on to something legendic.
MusicFan [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 17:21
You can hear the song here: http://www.iheartmusic.com/cc-common/ondemand/music.html?apid=4951 But only if you're in the US!
Leo [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 17:43
GREAT !Welcome back AXL:)
steveieo [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 17:49
amazing song! best music i've heard in years. rock is back. love it
KillKurtsKids [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:06
I Believe In A Thing Called Love was released 2 years after this song was peformed in Las Vegas.
jono [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:07
this is a shitty song and guns n roses are dead and have been for a long time. u cant have guns n roses without slash, duff, izzy and steven. Those days are long gone, and so is axl's mind. it'ss bordering on pointless. The proof is in the pudding and axl can stick his grooveless bag o S**e up is ass!!
jono [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:11
GnR now equals BoS = Bag o shite!
Jake [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:12
Phenomenal; great guitar works, powerfull. Looking forward to hear the story behind
Gnr Fan [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:26
This new song is great, its like a mix of its so easy with NIN nails. Its very different from old school gnr but its great. People are going to complain slash is not on this but the guitarist on this track are all very good. 4 stars out of 5
Helgo [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:27
pretty sweet song. Nice to see GN'R is back.
Alex [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:34
I'm suprised...it's actually really good!
Dave Clements [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:41
jono ... ah ... the expected response from some. Dude... get a life :) This band is a new band ... accept it. Slash and Duff have their own thing going on, with Velvet Revolver (who ALSO ROCK!) and Izzy is doing his solo thing, while Steve Adler is also getting his life together. So accept it. They have.
Peter [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:49
Awesome. Axl will get the "he took 15 years to make this?" a million times, which is sad, because THIS is a GREAT rock song. There's no discussion. And just wait 'till they release 'Better'....
Saul Hudson [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 18:57
It's absolutely rocks. I didn't expect much from the 'new' band, but my god this is outstanding. Go to www.gunsnroses.com and turn it up on a good set of speakers.
Dopedemand [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 19:25
Seriously overproduced, and nowhere near they're pinnacle. I would expect this to be a B-side not a single. To be fair, most bands have only one decent album in them, at the most two.
mike [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 19:54
Awsome
thoughtles [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 20:02
i can believe axl changed the name of one song ' the blues' to ' street of dreams', not only is cheesier than it already was but to make your fans think they're getting 4 unheard songs when there's only 3 'sorry' 'this i love' 'scraped'.....it's just shitty.
Tavis [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 20:08
Guns N Fuck N Roses are back! As the slogan for Guiness says "good things come to those who wait"... And I believe it will all be worth it come 24 November when Chinese Democracy hits the shelves.
joe [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 20:21
amazing agree with the poster above the leaked unfinished version was that promising compared to the other new songs,.. the finished version sounds HUGE
Egon Ronay [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 20:29
Shit song, shit band, get over it!
Anon [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 20:34
Fucking badass track!!! this is what the music world needed, some REAL rock music, not shit like ''Nickleback'' and ''Fall Out Boy''. this track is killer and imo one of the weakest tracks on the album so the rest is gonna be bloody brilliant. Oh, and they didn't rip off ''the darkness'', this song was made and performed live before ''the darkness'' even brought their album out.
Robin Finck [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 22:24
CHINESE DEMOCRACY STARTS NOW!!!
Nevin [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 22:48
Craptacular! I can't believe anyone waited around this long to eat this shit sandwich.
Ironfin [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 22:48
Was driving into to work this morning and this popped up on the radio! Its great to hear Guns n'Roses again. Love the choppy guitar riff - very appetite as someone else has said. Vocals are cool too, good track
Mark [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 22:50
I'm not even a GnR fan although I do have the Greatest Hits album. Have to say I'm actually really impressed with this track. Took a couple of listens but it's a blinder! Another one for the Christmas list i think
:-D [Visitor] //October 22 2008 at 23:27
14 years to produce! What a load of wank!
António [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 10:47
Axl Rose acts like he's some kind of Messiah. In the years it took to write such a so-so song, music has changed. All this hype is just that... a huge, hysterical publicity stunt from a band that ceased to have any importance quite a while ago. Chinese democracy, the song, couldn't be placed among 2008's 500 best...
LastHardMan [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 12:02
Oh, Man, this is Rock N Roll! I love this new shit! Axl - Rock N Roll God
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/COBAINREED [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 12:38
WHO FUCKING CARES AXL ROSE IS A LOSER HE IS THE ONLY ORIGINAL MEMBER LEFT SO I COULD IT BE GNR RECORD THEY FUCKING SUCK SO MUCH ASS
RANJIT [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 16:02
a song that may have sounded good 8 years ago when it was written but sounds old now.
Jase [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 19:11
Seen the new band 3 times now and Axl is still one of the best live performers around. Unique, rasping vocals. As far as I'm concerned Axl IS Guns N' Roses because anyone can learn to plat guitar / bass and Axl provides the distinctive sound to the band. Glad to see him back and I love the new songs that I've heard.
jono [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 20:13
i have a life thanks dave clements, it seems you dont know much about good music, feelgood stuff. its simply a bag o shite.... accept it!! 15 years people have had to wait for this? im sure slash is smirking, quietly chuckling to himself, cos if i was him i surely would....
kollin [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 20:15
savage stuff! looking forward to the album.
winklepin [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 20:26
i have to agree with jono et al on this one, the riff is a big time steal , didnt get any of that shit from slash, the vocalist doesnt feel like hes getting along with the rest of the backing track, not really gelling...sounds a little fake to be honest... dave clements ditch your technical bull , cos if it aint got feel its not real ;P
badasskid [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 20:56
best thing axl could do is go solo and leave the guns namer behind, wow embarassing or what? who thinks this rocks? are you insane? desperate?
james [Visitor] //October 23 2008 at 23:04
great fucking guitar on this-and considering it was my least favorite of the leaks i can't wait to hear the other finished versions-specifically Better
immealright? [Visitor] //October 24 2008 at 00:01
I was really expecting this song to be so bad that I would turn it off before the seonds had the chance to hit double figures. But, I really didnt think it was too bad....quite catchy...had it in my head all day.
Jon [Visitor] //October 24 2008 at 12:00
Guys , If you like it listen to it , if not just shut the fuck up ........ Man all you guys are like bitches winning .....just enjoy the free drink and have fun ..... A G'N'R fans since they started. True there is no original members and slash is great and compared to these guys but reality is he is not there .
moc-moc-a-moc [Visitor] //October 24 2008 at 12:07
this overblown piece of shit would have been an embarassment even if it had come out in the right decade :crivvens:
MIC95 [Visitor] //October 24 2008 at 15:11
I'VE HEARD IT ON THE NET ALSO AND THOUGHT ITWAS ONE OF THE WEAKER ONES BUT THE POLISHED VERSION SOUNDS AMAZING. CANT WAIT TO HEAR THE ALBUM VERSION OF BETTER. AWSOME.
Ciprian [Visitor] //October 24 2008 at 16:06
Finally some kick ass Rock music, as expected from Guns N'Roses- Welcome Back!!!-and Thank You,-for those posting sh....t GET A LIFE!!!!
Lau Chi Hang [Visitor] //October 24 2008 at 17:48
really great CHINESE DEMOCRACY!!! youtube.com/sk8hang
Lau Chi Hang [Visitor] //October 24 2008 at 17:49
'Chinese Democracy' great GNR
Simmo259 [Visitor] //October 24 2008 at 17:55
I expected to hate this but must confess I actual like it. No, wait! I think it's great. Imagine if the detractors (many of whom sound like complete morons on here) heard Chinese Democracy in connection with a new band - a band with no Axl/Slash, etc baggage? You'd be drooling. It's great, can't wait for the rest.
CodenameV [Visitor] //October 27 2008 at 12:28
I love Slash but he left G 'N R years ago so why not just move on accept this song for what it is, a decent "balls out" rocker! So what if it sounds dated, there's still a big market for this stuff, just look at AC/DC
thebiz [Visitor] //October 28 2008 at 07:50
it took them 14 years to come up with THAT!!??
visitor [Visitor] //November 1 2008 at 19:39
G'n'R blows donkeys. They should never have let Slash go. Now they can compete with Spinal Tap in the "where are they now" file.
Jake [Visitor] //November 3 2008 at 16:16
It might not be as good as their old stuff, but I can firmly say, ROCK IS BACK! And its gonna beat the crap out of indie. :)
