So… the first truly interesting chart battle of the year is over and out. And the metal overlords won it by a pretty large margin – Metallica’s ‘Death Magnetic’ is Number One in the UK albums chart, Glasvegas’ self-titled debut is Number Two.

Earlier in the week, for at least as long as it takes to belt out a quick rendition of ‘Daddy’s Gone’, it actually looked like the Ray Ban-welded Scots might beat off Lars Ulrich and co., so to speak.
It was an optimistic notion – in the end ‘tallica won by a chasm. And, as it turned out, my writing of a blog bigging up the ‘vegas was an act akin to fronting out Mike Tyson at 3am in a nightclub. Then flicking a peanut in his eye and pinching his girlfriend’s arse.

Metallica’s legions soon descended on the comments box, filling it up with all manner of vitriol and bile. All of which I clicked ‘approve’ for, of course, bar messages of downright abuse and one that suggested I should have been “aborted”.
One threat to “beet you up” (sic) aside, it was an interesting enough debate – surely similar to one any swipe at an act of Metallica’s stature would have initiated.
But just to clarify, I don’t wish Metallica any ill will. Indeed, if hats in any way suited me, I’d doff my cap at their immense achievements throughout their career.
But come on Metallica fans, in your darkest, deepest, double bass-drum pounding heart, don’t you agree that it would have been more interesting if Glasvegas – the most exciting new band since The Libertines – smashed the top off the UK albums chart like a big black guitar through a vase instead of a band who must surely now be called a “veteran act”?
