In The NME Office - Behind the scenes at NME - Behind the scenes at NME

As Noel Gallagher himself pointed out towards the end of the opening night of this three-date lad-rock event of the decade, it's insane that gigs of this size run off clunky, smoking old generators.

Even more surprisingly, enormo-show glitches aren't entirely unknown in this city - the Gallaghers' last run at Manchester's Eastlands Stadium was stopped in 2005 due to a barrier collapse and Arctic Monkeys were beset by similar sound issues at Old Trafford in 2007.

When last night's Heaton Park show cut out for the second time (during a glitchy 'Lyla'), the mood quickly darkened among the 70,000 fans. Boos rained down on the stage. The sky was awash with bodily fluids. The security looked decidedly nervous.

And The Rev, fresh from his last minute support slot? He was worriedly leading his disciples - The Makers, The Rascals, his parents - to the sanctuary of the backstage. "This is gonna get ugly," he prophesised, motioning to the crush building on a nearby barrier.

Thankfully, his Nostradamus predictions proved wrong for once and after 40 minutes, the problems sorted, Liam and co returned in triumphant mood.

continued...

Frankly, only a band with as much raw rock'n'roll power as Oasis could recover after such a horror start and ver classics - 'Wonderwall', 'Slide Away', 'Roll With It' - soon had Manchester in raptures. Most bands would be crushed by such an embarrassing fuck up, but then this lot have never been most bands. Just to underline the jubilant mood, Liam even managed a few quips.

"I remember coming here at as a kid to watch the Pope," he grinned at one point. "He was alright, but he didn't have any tunes."

He later laid into a local newspaper journalist for daring to suggest in her latest column the gig shouldn’t have gone ahead in the first place.

In fact, the Pretty Green label boss was in better spirits than this writer has seen onstage in years - where Noel was grumbling about a "farce", his brother was still voicing his confidence of bettering Knebworth.

"We're still gonna give it a real fucking go," he roared before a triumphant 'My Big Mouth'. And you know what? Even after the fuck ups, you still wouldn't bet against them bettering their seminal moment on tonight's (eventual) form.

Roll on Saturday - and please, get the number of a decent electrician, lads.

oasis are the pits
Ant [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:13
Once the glitches were sorted out they were brilliant. Where we were the mood was getting a bit grim but as soon as they came back on stage all the anger disappeared and left every person singing every word.
Joe Poole [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:16
Class band .. anyone who thinks anything differently is a bell end. Live Forever x
Tom [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:19
Going tomoro and cant wait, the setlist looks really good, all that is missin for me is Hello, Stay Young and Rockin Chair.
clive [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:27
terrible band. yawn. nuff said.
Josie [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:31
I can honestly say that in spite of all the trouble this was probably the best gig of my life; even the support were INCREDIBLE. I won't be claiming my money back coz they were worth every penny.
Paul [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:35
I was there. Nobody really minded the wait from where I was - gave us all chance to go to the bar and toilet again! When they did come back they showed why they are loved. Liam's voice was the best I've heard it in 12 years. He was loving it and to be honest so were the other 70,000
joe poole 2 [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:39
i like you
Craig [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:41
Agreed! Great gig. Sound when they came back on was not as loud as previously so they obviously sacrifcied power for stability. 70,000 singing along though made up the difference. You would have to be a sh*thouse to refund your ticket!
m shepherd [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:45
fucking ace night oasis rocked manchester... fuck the glitches they will die out the band will live forever..
[Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:52
There nice lads really, giving everyone thier money back! Bring on Wembley!!!
Carl from Preston [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:54
A few glitches but they totally blew the crowd away with an absolute storming set, the best band ive seen in years even with the generator fowl up. Dont ask for your money back, keep your ticket and remember a great come back by Britains NO.1 band.
oasis are cack [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:55
Joe Poole, you are the bell end for seeing that pile of crap
Ian Haggarty [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 11:56
It was a damn shame the boys were let down like that! Organisers got it wrong right from the walk on stage. After all that rubbish was sorted, they played another fantastic gig. They are only ever brilliant! Oasis forever!
Tom Watney [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 12:00
I didn't realise it was a 40 minute wait. Their 24 song set does not warrant a refund, so anyone who applies is exactly what Noel says ["a c**t"], get over it you know it was brilliant throughout.
Paul & Laurie [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 12:01
Aside from the glitch they were fantastic again, at last! Even Liam stopped that feckin annoying habit of backing away from the mike half way though every line. Top show!
graham [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 12:04
alot of people left after the second glitch as it started to look like it could turn ugly and was takin an age to sort out...refunds all round me thinks.
Shejken [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 12:05
Sounds good. Can't wait for Wembley, get in !
joe [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 12:24
Off tomorrow, hope the generator can handle the rain.
Matt [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 12:31
Last night was amazing! I for one will not be requesting a refund, it was worth every penny baby!
GRIZ [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 12:34
Stop slagging Oasis off suppose your all fans of muse or them f**king toss pots Greenday !!! Get to france you f**kers. See you in the Rain. NE
Graham Coxon [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 12:35
Well i think that Oasis deserve a big round of applaus for offering a refund love Oasis. However Blur wont be offering any refunds for our poor performances across the country.
ace!! [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 12:41
love the way noel thinks he's still a burnage lad down with all the nine to fivers 'Everyone can have a refund' - then realise he's actually a multi-millionaire londoner now 'Actually, forget that, you're a cunt if you do!' ha ha
jo [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:02
the crowd were wondeful and really supported oasis who were fantastic once the tech errors had been sorted out . To those who go tonight be aware the park and ride situation with the shuttle buses was terrible but hopefully that will be sorted for the next two nights , enjoy
Charlotte [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:07
I certainly didn't see anyone leave and the mood was ok - like Paul said just gave us chance to have a break! Fantastic gig, on top form - anyone seeing them in the next few days is in for a treat!
jamie [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:07
any nob, who decides to apply for a refund, is exactly what nole says, a cnt, 24 set list, cant moan wiht that. bes oasis have been in years. live forever.x
Carl [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:09
Can't wait for Sunday... and to all the haters who are popping up waffling shite. I just wonder what fucking tripe bands you actually think are good. Bet your fans of some cheese rock shit. HA HA. Oasis best band on the fooking planet by far.
Caroline [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:11
Every cloud has a silver lining. I spent the 40 minutes wait getting to know a rather nice guy called Luke from Portsmouth. When Oasis came back on they rocked, worth the wait and every penny. It was a top night. Unfortunately Luke and I got separated in the crowd at the end...almost a perfect night...
visitor [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:27
so how do u get a refund?
Anti-clive/oasis are cack/anyone who wastes thier time writing hatful comments [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:28
Trust someone called 'clive' or 'oasis are cack' to comment on a story about a band they don't even like. 'Yawn' what losers!!!! 'Pile of crap' well I think someone should shut their crass mouth...
jo(visitor) [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:28
wasnt a bad night really, after the problems, but just how do u get a refund?
NME DESPISER [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:29
Can tell who all the NME worshipppers are, on these posts. I quote "shit pub band", what complete cocks. Its called social commentary, being young and fun music. Unlike pretencious shite endorsed by the NME, that is quite simply breeding the gay boy, soo called "indie" aka "emo" aka "mindless", fan. I hate the NME, and its fans, im disgusted i had to read this review on their site. :)
BethDarlington [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:39
Amazing gig regardless of the technical difficulties. Oasis were brilliant and the whole show was fantastic!!
Tom [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:42
'Oasis are cack' your the bell end mate, you dont know what proper music is. Why dont you stay at home listenin to your shit music (Muse, Manics, Radiohead etc) and do a bit of self harm whilst knockin one out over Thom Yorke, you said little boy A 24 song set is really good value for money, anyone who trys to get a refund is not only a cunt as Noel points out, but also a cheap one.
Lamby [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 13:55
a crackin gig. oasis nailed it. the technical probs were no worries. people who r pissin an moanin bout refunds need to av a word wiv themselves. ithe lads earned they`re money last nite. buy the DVD fuckin quality
[Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 14:04
The gig was incredible, forget the glitches this is a live show after all and anything can happen, Oasis completely redeemed themselves with a quality setlist, Noel was on top form and Liams voice was better than ive heard in a long time
This-charming-man [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 14:13
Why do these Oasis haters feel it necessary to come on here leaving stupid comments, (Oasis are cack) what band do you listen to ya mug? Must be a radiohead fan or fuckin Franz Ferdinand, Oasis are still the best band this country has because the rest of em are all tone death wankers like you.
Manny [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 14:18
I went to see Oasis yesterday, n they were unbelievable. The generator problems jst seemed to add to the atmosphere. Liam was on best form and back to his best. Maybe the generator fiasco put him under abit of pressure n it made him rase his game. Top nite, top music, cups of piss everywhere, booze... proper gig, mega, live forever!
Lou & Bri [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 14:33
AMAZING night...hiccups all added to the fun...Liam's voice was better than i've heard it for years...liked the 'first come first served' for the pit wristbands aswell...usually prices are inflated for the priviledge but these were free!!!
Toon Knights [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 15:48
Only Oasis would have gone on to rock the 70,000 fans after the initial technical nightmare. Real proffessianalism from Liam (who would have said that a few years back, eh?) Brilliant stuff from the the best band in the world.
Big G [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 16:10
Fucking amazing. Easily best gig of my life. Liam is an absolute legend. "generator blew up so we borrowed one from an argos in Manchester..." Great save.
Rabz [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 16:18
Every band has technical difficulties someday, I'm sure there isn't a successful band the world over that hasn't. But there's only one band I can think of who would rebound from that and entertain 70,000 in the way only Oasis can, nice save lads. Can't wait for tomorrow! To the NME hater I just have to say: what the f**k are you doing on NME.com if you hate it you thick tosser?
Kev J [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 16:20
I am going on sat night, how strict are they on taking booze in. Cant wait ROCK ON...
Deepdaler [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 16:26
gig was superb and lets not forget Kasabian - played out of their socks. These events are insured against breakdowns so i'm getting a refund - about time the fatcats coughed up.
Brian [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 16:26
The gig itself was quality you just can't fault the lads. The set list was awesome and liam was on fire. Having said that the wristband situation was a joke. Only the first twenty thousand could get anywhere near the stage so why sell 80,000 tickets. Also the shuttle bus back into manchester after was a joke, 3 busses where waiting outside the gates after the gig, THREE FUCKING BUSES FOR 80,00 FANS. was queing up for ages. The whole 40 minute break to get the power back on didnt really bother me and it didn't seem to cause much of a problem but the stadium gigs will be better, wembley here we come !!
katie [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 16:36
even though there were a few problems it was an amazing night! i loved every minute of it, when oasis went off stage people started singin oasis tunes like dont look back in anger. it was amazin, only oasis could come back after that n carry on with such passion. what a bunch of legends!! best band in the world, no doub about it!!!
Chuck [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 17:02
Sod Oasis go buy tickets for The Cribs
Stokie [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 17:22
Were you all at a different gig last night? It was sh1te. Dirty b@astards pissing in pint pots and throwing it around; crap venue, full of kids singing football songs. Ill forgive Oasis for the power cuts but the venue was diabolical, no organisation inside or outside, day ruined... Last gig i went to in Liverpool was 100% better, and i didnt get covered in some local oafs urine.
Ramshaw hpool [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 17:41
Showered in cups of p!ss.. Power cuts..The long walk back.. Do we want a refund? do we F**k! Cracking gig! ps lay off the sugar puffs your p!ss stinks! ha ha
Bring your raincoats chaps . . . [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 18:16
Sounds like it was worth every penny to me. :) Legendary band, can't wait for tomorrow, just hope they've got that generator fixed! Bring on the rain! :D.
[Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 18:39
I do hope they surprise everyone by making another album on par with the first two then it will be worth the wait.
gazza [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 19:37
amazing gig!! but i for one will be claiming money back - event was not well organised i live 40 minutes drive away from gig concert finished at 11:20 but i didn't get home til 2:45am park and ride was poor ended up walking to car which took 45 minutes and still beat buses back!! Sorry oasis but you can blame the organisers for me wanting cash back! make sure it comes out there pockets!!!
jack [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 20:00
top gig! the technical problems made the crowd more up for it! long live oasis, i certainly wont be askin for my money back, worth every penny
Winston Smith [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 20:36
Oh. My. God. What the fuck has happened to the standard of grammar and spelling in this country? You lot are the future...but your spelling and grammar is awful, dreadful! 'Txtspeak' isn't cool, you know. Read more books; starting with '1984' by good ol' Eric Blair. He died for you.
Bob [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 20:58
It was mint the break ups dint feel anythin like 40 mins and 24 songs it flew by, great set too! kasabian and reverend and makers was class too! OASIS!
Miss Victoria [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 21:21

Leon [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 22:50

Baz from Boro [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 23:20
I'm with the people saying the delay added to the atmosphere. Gave us a chance for a piss and a pint, and there was no trouble where we were standing. The set was awesome, the whole gig was, well worth the money!
spurs mark [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 23:31
get there early and get the front pit wristband!! great gig, shit transport arrangements make sure you get the metro back(a bit of a walk rather than wait for the buses, we were back in the city centre by 12.15 some of our friends who waited for buses(or even walked back)didnt get back until after two Were the enemy really ill???or did the Gallagherstell them not to bother turning up?? Stand out track had to be half the world away excellent gig and not too many cartons of piss being thrown during Oasisthough the same cannot be said about the supports!!
Joe gez [Visitor] //June 5 2009 at 23:38
last nite was the best gig ever oasis are legends and will never die. live forever

Jon [Visitor] //June 6 2009 at 17:38
I was there and I can tell you it was getting brutal where I was at the front. But like it was easily the best gig of my life as well. Kasabian had everyone going really well and Twisted Wheel and Reverend played a good set list.
Sonny-D [Visitor] //June 6 2009 at 22:31
Oasis --> *yawn*
kieran [Visitor] //June 6 2009 at 23:30
it wasnt theyr fault this happened anyway, i even bet they still played one of the best shows ever. Roll On Murrayfield On The 17th June :) Mad Fer It
JoeF [Visitor] //June 7 2009 at 00:04
since we had all been there from about 4pm onwards, a 40 min break wasnt too much hassle. I did see people leaving tho - i myself thought it was all over when the smoke poured out the back of the stage! Brilliant set though, better than eastlands in 05 maybe? Only thing that put a downer on the night was waiting 2 hours for a bus back to the city center..
Yellowjacket [Visitor] //June 7 2009 at 03:56
It would be nice if all those refunds were directed towards the homeless shelters in the Uk......
Jordan [Visitor] //June 7 2009 at 11:50
wow last night was absolutely amazing despite being covered in p**s but it was worth it. oasis are brilliant. live forever lads.
Bored [Visitor] //June 7 2009 at 13:31
Oasis Saturday- Musically brilliant, personaility, showmaship, audience interaction-crap.
NICK [Visitor] //June 7 2009 at 19:21
ALL I CAN SAY IS ' LEDGENDS'
[Visitor] //June 8 2009 at 14:26
worst gig i've ever been to! anyone that enjoys standing miles away from the band whilst getting piss thrown over you every 5 seconds obviously hasn't been to a proper gig. They should stick to arena gigs, these things are a fucking waste of time
Paddy From Belfast [Visitor] //June 8 2009 at 20:11
saw them in the oddessy arena in belfast, they were immense. cant wait to see them at slane castle! and 'carl from darlo'...in the words of noel gallagher i hope u catch aids and die
Makka [Visitor] //June 9 2009 at 15:18
Dodgy sound, pilled up piss heads making a fool of themselves, same setlist as November and stage level screens, apart from that - great! Musn't grumble it may be 5 years 'til we see them again.
raffo [Visitor] //June 9 2009 at 20:10
u sad fs oasis r the dullest group ever not scouse manc sentiment some of the better groups scouse some of the best groups manc but oasis ffsake slade anybody dull (coldpklay etc) oasis are the worlds shittest and most boring band ever it would be difficult 2 b either more boring or more shitter if u tried imagine gervais dance - oasis would dream 2 b able 2 do that
jackil [Visitor] //June 10 2009 at 00:46
