Check the new issue of NME, out tomorrow (December 5), and you’ll see an interview with the boss of record label Wall Of Sound, Mark Jones, lashing abck at Jon ‘The Reverend’ McClure for planning to release his next album free (as reported in NME, November 24 issue).
Now we’d like to know what you think of the free music phenomenon. 2007 saw free albums from artists including Prince, Ray Davies, and potentially Radiohead, with fans choosing how much to pay for their ‘In Rainbows’ album (two thirds paid nothing).
Do you think recorded music should be free? Do you feel guilty about downloading music free or burning CDs for other people so they don’t have to buy them? Do you think musicians need money from record sales?
And what about the labels? How can new bands and artists be invested in without money from record sales? Do bands need record deals at all? What do you think about the free music moves from Prince et al, and The Rev?
Please e-mail your comments along with your name, age and location, to news@nme.com with 'FREE MUSIC DEBATE' as the headline.
