In The NME Office - Behind the scenes at NME - Behind the scenes at NME

So, you should have already downloaded The Cribs’ comeback song, ‘We Were Aborted’.

Firstly, Cribs fans, exhale – it’s great. An unmistakable Johnny Marr intro riff slicing into Ryan Jarman’s newly understated vocals, now pulled back to something more subtle than his ‘Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever’ yelling, marking the moment that Marr’s guest spot on stage with the then-trio on the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour last year evolved to become something we can hold on our iPods for real.

Nick Launay’s production is classy, deft and thudding – the band’s tinny indie-ness wiped away in favour of something more adult. And if that conjures up images of coffee tables just imagine Ryan ploughing a guitar through the middle of one during afternoon tea – this is still vicious and raw.

continued...

The lyrics, meanwhile, concern masturbation and abortion – comforting (if rather… icky-sticky) reminders that The Cribs are still yet to place radio play-ability over artistic integrity.

For me, excitement has been bubbling and building about the band’s September-bound album since I heard vocal-less demos recorded during the band’s first ever rehearsal session with Marr. ‘We Were Aborted’ won’t be their defining moment as a four-piece – but it’s one hell of a vein-full of adrenalin to pump into the circulation system of anyone with more than a passing interest in what I’m hoping will be the album of the year.

Even if the song title does sound like something off a Marilyn Manson album.

I'm a big Cribs fan and I like it. With the slightly heavier sound it's more reminiscent of "The New Fellas" than "MNWMW" which I feel is a more complete album anyway. Highly anticipating "Ignore the Ingorant"

The Cribs are not as recognized in Singapore as in the Brit but am glad am one of the few millions here to know them!! how i wished i could fly over very soon to attend at least one of their gigs! great job to the new song! cant wait for the new album!

sounds really good. better than almost everything on mnwmw (apart from men's needs and shoot the poets). I'm quite relieved cause I thought they sounded like some shite Breakin Benjamin type alternative band in the first couple of bars. the chorus is brilliant

was abit worried when marr joined the band that the sound would suddenly change with the addition of another guitarist but its clearly a progression, just hope that all the smiths and modest mouse fans dont push the band into the main stream cos of marr's fame

Hell of a song, like this blog says ti's more adult but it's a prgression not a sudden change and it's still bloody raw.

I really like it, it's a lot like what I was hoping for.

this song is ace. One of Britain's best bands back with their finest moment yet. I hope The Cribs get the attention they deserve, they have outlasted every scene since 2002 and they are still getting better. "Ignore The Ignorant" should be album of the year and this track is so much better than the dreary new Arctic Monkeys single. Wakefield 1, Sheffield 0

Took 3 listens until I was hooked. A really well rounded song. Definitely has a sound iv never heard in any of there previous songs. Thank the music gods one of the most under rated bands in the world are still firing on all cylinders.

Perfect next step for their sound. The last two albums have barely had a bad song on them. Hope this is more of the same.

i was dissapointed with this song, its just so samey, the vocals are too try-hard but the lyrics are quite clever. maybe it is a grower
