So, you should have already downloaded The Cribs’ comeback song, ‘We Were Aborted’.
Firstly, Cribs fans, exhale – it’s great. An unmistakable Johnny Marr intro riff slicing into Ryan Jarman’s newly understated vocals, now pulled back to something more subtle than his ‘Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever’ yelling, marking the moment that Marr’s guest spot on stage with the then-trio on the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour last year evolved to become something we can hold on our iPods for real.

Nick Launay’s production is classy, deft and thudding – the band’s tinny indie-ness wiped away in favour of something more adult. And if that conjures up images of coffee tables just imagine Ryan ploughing a guitar through the middle of one during afternoon tea – this is still vicious and raw.
The lyrics, meanwhile, concern masturbation and abortion – comforting (if rather… icky-sticky) reminders that The Cribs are still yet to place radio play-ability over artistic integrity.
For me, excitement has been bubbling and building about the band’s September-bound album since I heard vocal-less demos recorded during the band’s first ever rehearsal session with Marr. ‘We Were Aborted’ won’t be their defining moment as a four-piece – but it’s one hell of a vein-full of adrenalin to pump into the circulation system of anyone with more than a passing interest in what I’m hoping will be the album of the year.
Even if the song title does sound like something off a Marilyn Manson album.
