Courtney Love video interview - Part 1
Courtney Love video interview - Part 2

Yesterday we saw Courtney Love in all her kooky Hollywood glory. But it’s easy to forget that beneath all the star stories, lies a pretty awesome rock star in her own right. Last week at the Henson Studios, we got to hear working versions of some of the songs that will end up on the new Hole album ‘Nobody’s Daughter’.

Courtney gives us a new sneak preview of ‘Samantha’ and ‘Nobody’s Daughter’ on the clip below. And to keep you going, here’s a sneak preview on some more of the songs set for the follow-up to ‘Celebrity Skin’.

'Samantha'
The big first single. Originally tagged on the end of the Linda Perry sessions, its rockular nature inspired the direction that would lead to the resurrection of Hole. Powered by a Billy Corgan riff and firing from all nu-grunge cylinders the rest of the way, 'Samantha' announces Hole’s return doing what Courtney does best – skewering a hooker waitress/model actress who’s no better than she ought to be. “Watch her wrap her legs around this world”, snarls Courtney, as only she can.

'Nobody's Daughter'
A complete rewrite of the version that was played live on her UK tour (you can listen to a live version here). The album’s title track has been reborn as a ponderous squall coloured the gothest black.

continued...

'Pacific Coast Highway'
One of the earliest songs on the session, toughened up from the Perry era, this confessional song is nonetheless one of the record’s more plaintive moments, in the vein of 'Malibu'. Lyrically, it finally addresses the scars she still bears over her husband’s death in the most brutal fashion: "I knew a boy who came from the sea/he was the only boy who ever knew the truth about me... I knew a boy who left me so ravaged/do you even know the extent of the damage? ... I’m overwhelmed and undersexed?/Baby what did you expect?/I’m overwrought and so disgraced/I’m too ashamed to show my face/And they’re coming to take me away now/what I want I will never have/I’m on the Pacific Coast Highway/With your gun in my hand".

You can listen to a demo version below.

'Skinny Little Bitch'
A balls-out, low-down dirty rock song, and as fine a signature tune for the new Hole as you could imagine. Tapping the same lyrical vein as 'Samantha', it's The Stooges fronted by a Joan Jett re-imagined as the Bride Of Frankenstein. And it’s the sound of Courtney having fun.

'Honey'
The most powerful and the most bleak of all the songs. And possibly also the best. 'Honey' tells her and Kurt's doomed love story in the most unflinching detail, without a single metaphor to act as safety net: “Did I not love you enough to save you from your doom?” It’s a dense, paranoid rock ballad with a minor-key chorus from hell itself: "He goes down, down to his bitter end...".

'Letter To God'
Courtney asked Linda Perry for 'Beautiful', the song that eventually went to Christina Aguilera. Instead she got this, a confessional power ballad from Perry’s box of hits, on which Love has the smallest of writing credits (for the line, “I never wanted to be some kind of comic relief”), Courtney has never forgotten the negative feedback from NME Editor Conor McNicholas about the song that “will keep baby in shoes,” but she isn’t budging. "You guys are the NME, you’re not supposed to like this song. I’d be worried if you did!"

'For Once In Your Life'
Mellow and reflective, even a little bit folky. And in waltz time. This is Courtney indulging her Stevie Nicks side.

'Codine'
A raw and Dylanish dirge, telling an old fashioned love story between a girl and her meds. Stripped down and acoustic, 'Codine' isn't finished yet, but it wears the scars of her recent experience in a hyper-real fantasy. Would be a shoo-in for album closer if it wasn't for...

'Never Go Hungry Again'
The ultimate rehab song! But also the ultimate survivor's song. "My dress is torn and I've got no jewels/And I'm hungry for life a little less cruel". 'Never Go Hungry Again' genuinely was written from the point of being broke and broken, and it's a simple, stripped down defence of her indulgent Hollywood lifestyle, and a vow to never go back to the bad old days. The crazy new days are working just fine.

So, how are you feeling about the return of Hole and the prospect of 'Nobody's Daughter'? Share your comments below.

i just can't believe that "letter to god" is being kept for a record that is coming out under the name of Hole. we'll see how this ends... i personally would have loved it if she had released the record as it was meant to be in 2006, with that vibe reminiscent of 90s patti smith and marianne faithfull, and then move to do a rock record. the idea of mixing these songs with a Hole project is just weird for me and for a lot of her followers.

fuck yeh last of the true icons!
Andrew [Visitor] //June 18 2009 at 14:48
I agree with DesperateK, it's a bit weird to see the Hole name on these songs, but your write-ups sound extremely promising. The lyrics seem strong. I'd be perfectly happy with a respected and rejuvenated Courtney/Hole.

i could not agree with desperateK more. this whole process of releasing and NOT releasing nobody's daughter has been tiresome to say the least and now to see that love's joining the 90s band reunion bandwagon to seemingly get some press for a record that should have come out three years ago, it's just disappointing. i'm still excited to hear the finished product of course, but my frustrations have far outweighed everything else over the last few years.

The tunes sound cool but her voice just sounds like it cant cope with the screaming anymore. The quieter songs sound great, vocals and all. But maybe its just the sound quality. Im certainly ready to be proved wrong.

What happened to 'How Dirty Girls Get Clean'? I love that song. I am slightly skeptical about the whole Hole reunion as it's not really Hole without Eric but I am really looking forward to this album and the finished product. She's still got something.
Ninety Nine Inch Waist [Visitor] //June 18 2009 at 18:46
This is Amazing. I just hope Dirty Girls is on the record. I think it's the only demo that actually sounds like CLASSIC Hole to me. Letter To God is pure cheese. I hope it works on the record..

Hmm, it seems a tad cynical to me. Suddenly re-taking the name Hole doesn't really make sense. If Melissa and Eric aren't going to be full members, what's the point? Courtney has a name that could carry another solo album, it's not as if, in the grand scheme of things, Hole were *that* well known. Courtney has always been the draw. Either way, I can't wait to hear it. It would have been nice if it had been released as intended, the demo's I heard were all really good. Glad to see 'Stand Up Motherfucker' isn't here though, that sucked ass.
Black Kat [Visitor] //June 18 2009 at 21:33
Yeah I agree with ELLE - shame 'Dirty Girls' appears overlooked; a brilliant song. And also I agree it's been a bloody saga with this album. What a turn up that she's going back to Hole. Daren't get too excited about a tour just yet.
wicked on the typewriter [Visitor] //June 18 2009 at 21:44
She´d be nothing had she not been married to Kurt. That´s the truth.

And the queen is back from hell with flowers in her hair...

Donatello Vesache's ugly sister anyone?
Dollie [Visitor] //June 19 2009 at 12:35
I CANNOT wait for this album to come out, also agree with some of the above, thought the earlier songs were really great, kind of different and stripped down which was nice. Hopefully this will be amazing when its eventually realeased!
Savage [Visitor] //June 19 2009 at 13:33
I don't mean to insult Hole fans or the band themselves here but don't NME have something better to be reporting on? You're out in LA, there's bound to be some new music of note being made, give us a blog about that! It's plainly obvious that Courtney Love's career as a musician is long over - that's not to say Hole weren't valid in their day - and that a new album under the name Hole doesn't merit this kind of attention. There are plenty of brilliant unsigned bands out there who would murder for this level of press exposure.
Berlin13 [Visitor] //June 19 2009 at 15:38
Courtney can't sing or hold a tune. She wouldn't even pass the first round of American Idol. She sounds terrible even for punk. If not for her name and connections and money she wouldn't even be in the studio. I predict it will be her last album (I hope.)

hope this is the true follow up to 'live through this'.celebrity skin was a bit shit, maybe courtney's got her demons back?
Sharee [Visitor] //June 20 2009 at 00:36
What happened to Nobody;s Daughter its not even reminiscent of the earlier version, and i agree dirty girls HAS to be on the album...wtf is going on...Letter To God is rubbish god courtney dont do it!
hurricanevenus [Visitor] //June 20 2009 at 00:38
Hole? Hmmmm. Unconvinced. Doesn't she have enough confidence to release it as Courntey after the uninspired response to America's Sweetheart? No surprise at the extended flattery for NME's faithful poster girl. Is the magic still there? The scepticism and anticipation mount...
Carlos [Visitor] //June 20 2009 at 10:06
I feel excited but a little disappointed; Im with the opinion that she should released the original "Nobody's Daughter" album. What about SUNSET MARQUIS, I think is a brilliant song... Car Crash is also good, let's just hope they make it to the final album. And hole without Eric and Patty, I'm a little doubtful, I mean look at the Pumpkins reunion without Iha and Wretzky, a complete mess.
T.j. [Visitor] //June 20 2009 at 11:03
Where are the other linda songs? i mean i'm all for a good rock song from courtney but the other songs showcased her talent shes not a stagediver anymore, i mean i'm just holding out for sunset marquis, and loserdust, and happy ending story, they better be on this record
Dude [Visitor] //June 20 2009 at 11:26
If she doesn't put 'Car Crash' on this records, she's probably as insane as Billy Corgan. That's the best Courtney Love-Song ever written.
Hole [Visitor] //June 20 2009 at 14:54
I kinda like the new version of NOBODY'S DAUGHTER :D
Mia [Visitor] //June 20 2009 at 23:28
I think she is really talented, but I hope the new album comes out (for real this time) and its released a CL solo album, not Hole, that's kind of strange ,but I really like 'Never go Hungry Again" sounds a lot like a Bob Dylan song, like "The Times are a Changing". I hope to hear some more electric/guitar oriented/rock songs. Anymore clips?
Ciderhse [Visitor] //June 21 2009 at 00:52
Just like a cockroach.
caroline [Visitor] //June 21 2009 at 06:01
keep up the good work, nothing is waisted when something comes from the heart!!
she [Visitor] //June 21 2009 at 22:26
If Courtney seriously wants to do music, she might want to consider altering her sound a little, to better fit her smoke, drug and age riddled voice. The acts that achieved fame at the same time or before she did modified themselves with time. She should try it.
Juice [Visitor] //June 22 2009 at 00:11
Courtney is Back Holeeee Backkkkkkkkk I'm so Excited
JASIN [Visitor] //June 22 2009 at 09:48
Live thru this and America's sweetheart are her best work. IDK why she gave up on that album-- it was so good!
