In The NME Office - Behind the scenes at NME - Behind the scenes at NME

And we want it… NOW!

There’s been a lot of talk about what would be the best lasting tribute to Factory Records legend Tony Wilson – the man who brought us Joy Division, New Order, the Happy Mondays and, erm, A Certain Ratio.

continued...

A tribute concert would be a good idea, naturally, but we reckon a plaque on the Hacienda building, as has been suggested, is a bit yawn-some, especially as the former super-club is actually just a bunch of flats now.

No, what we need is a Tony Wilson statue in the middle of Manchester, preferably decked-out in Wilson’s favoured safari-style suit and tennis shoes – a look we should surely help preserve in time for all eternity.

So, what do you think? Leave a comment below if you agree with us.

This would be despite the fact that Wilson himself was against being put on a pedestal as a statue? Well done there, NME.

He would hate a statue! Surely he would have wanted the money which would be wasted on it to go back into the manchetser music scene he worked so hard to protect and build?! A tribute gig then an annual festival in his name would be a far more fitting tribute to the great man so his legacy can live on for future 'madchester' generations.

that is a pathetic idea. i bet all the manc scene kids want it to help them when they pretend to know who he is

Maybe they could create a statue with a donation slot. The donations could then be used to fund a Manchester Record label to help new talent record and produce music.

Not necessarily a statue - perhaps best to ask his nearest and dearest to see what they think...it's clear that Manchester needs a permanent tribute to him for the fantastic contributions he made to the city - a sculpture perhaps? Tony was a truly wonderful guy.

No offence n all i understand what you guys are saying about that we should use the money to fund new manchester bands but we cant just forget the past. We must remember he did'nt just improve the manchester music scene but the city of manchester itself. I believe a statue would be perfect way to celebrate his life. A way of saying thanks tony for all you did for us.

Whoever suggested this is a complete tool. It's very sad that he's died but he didn't exactly add to the sum total of human knowledge did he?
