In The NME Office - Behind the scenes at NME - Behind the scenes at NME

You know how it is: you go to the cashpoint expecting to withdraw £360 million, and – d'oh! – your account is empty. At least, that's the situation that Courtney Love found herself in, according to a statement issued by her lawyer yesterday.

It's thought the missing third of a billion was siphoned off by fraudsters. Now, even post-banking meltdown, when trillions of dollars get tipped into fiscal black holes to no perceivable benefit, that seems like a pretty major oversight. How out-of-it do you have to be to fail to notice the disappearance of such a vast sum?

Then again, musicians have always been easy targets for embezzlers, since they're usually away on tour, or simply too wasted to keep an eye on their finances. It's not cool to have you accountant (as opposed to your drug-dealer) on speed dial. But white-collar criminals know this, and have exploited the financial negligence of celebrities to enrich themselves time and again.

continued...

The Charlatans, for example, kissed goodbye to the profits from their first four albums, thanks to the machinations of a dishonest accountant. Trevor Williams, a friend of the band as well as an employee, squirreled away £300,000, telling Tim Burgess and co that he was offsetting future tax bills (you can well imagine Burgess' eyes glazing over at that point). The fraud saw Williams imprisoned for 20 years. "We are staggered at the depth of his deceit," reflected band manager Steve Harrison, ruefully.

It's rarely possible to recoup such colossal losses. Recently, Leonard Cohen was reluctantly spat back out onto the live circuit by the need to plug a gaping hole in his retirement fund left by a former manager. Kelley Lynch allegedly helped herself to £5 million of the singer-songwriter's savings while he was away training to be a monk (you turn your back for one minute etc). So if you thought prices for his O2 Arena shows were a little steep, now you know why.

Cohen's plight proves that it's not only drug-addled hedonists who fall foul of fraudsters. Even the wisest, most abstemious musicians can be victims. More frequently, though, it is the naked, starry-eyed desire for fame – rather than an inability to scan the small print – that causes musicians to get ripped off.

This is especially true of boy bands. 'N Sync began a bitter legal battle against former manager Lou Pearlman in 1999, claiming he "took advantage of our trust". In 1998, the Backstreet Boys filed a lawsuit alleging that in the preceding five years, they had received only $300,000 in royalties – despite selling almost 100 million albums.

Although you could argue that, while being cheated out of potential earnings by an avaricious manager is unfortunate, mislaying £360 million of your own money is just monumentally careless. And a bit embarrassing.

I can see this happening...to Courtney. Wastoid idiot. I loved Kurt but have no sympathy for her being so stupid and Kurt being so stupid to marry a sow like her. No wonder he offed himself.

yeah to lose £360 million is pretty daft, as is selling the rights to your dead husbands music to a jock like computer sports game company.. if he had a grave he would be spinning in it.. i miss nirvana, they rocked (until they sold out) best live band ive seen, had a light hearted atmosphere about them, despite the shit around them

It's terrible that this happened to Leonard Cohen. 'Fresh Air' replayed a great interview with him from 2006. Read about it here: http://onthebutton.wordpress.com/2009/04/08/leonard-cohen-on-how-to-write-a-son/

Nirvana were big, but £360m? She must be still off her tits if she thinks he made that much from a few decent selling albums. Ledg doesn't always mean wedge.

Least that bitch can't spend anymore of it,now she might have to actually do something.

Fact is, the successful bands are making far more money than anyone is aware but no one talks about this - so you end up with the weird scenario where people like Graham Coxon are talking of 'struggling to get through the winter with the fuel bills going up', when in reality he's a multi-multi-multi millionaire, Jarvis driving around in a Hillman Imp when ditto, etc etc. Paul Weller releases a record called Stanley Row allegedly about his childhood road and roots, that's all fine but he's pretending he's still living in the working-class world when he's made zillions. Point 2: even bands like Kaiser Chefs (ha ha) are already mega rich. And PETER DOHERTY but they and mags like NME basically pretend otherwise. Any band that does a stadium tour is making a lot of money cos the profits to be made are sizeable - would you do a gig in Amsterdam for £20K, think about it, a whole tour or summer's worth of festivals and the band start laughing. THAT is all where the £360million comes from - but what is sad is that you get the feeling that Kurt had to turn himself in to a drug addict to somehow make himself appear reasonable (ie, not rich, not wealthy, not playing along with the straight world's game) to the wider public - killing himself slowly in the process (hard to imagine he would have killed himself if he'd been clean, eg).

Courtney was always awful - and her band. Amazed that NME put her on the cover and give her so much coverage all the time, what did she 'give to the world', like? Nirvana had a coupla fine albums...

Yeeh , i agree with Thomas. I think she maybee lost the money when she was high or something like that, e_e. And i think Kurt would never let this money, i mean , it's a biig money, he wasn't stuptid ... and i think he realised the sheat that he made ( marry her ) in the end of his life .

Kurts gone and Courtney spent alot of time wasted, like lots of rock stars, easy targets. I can't see Courtney masterminding anything like this. Things should turn out interesting as it unfolds

Something similar happened to CSS. It's pretty sad.

What's all this talk of £360 million? Take off a few zeros – the sum at issue is a quarter of a million. Big, but nor ridiculous.
