In The NME Office - Behind the scenes at NME - Behind the scenes at NME

Last year Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin promised – threatened? – that the veteran grunge act would "write and record until we are dead". It seemed a wildly over-confident statement at the time, and so it has proved: on 21 March it was announced that Chamberlin had left the band.

This leaves Billy Corgan as the sole original Pumpkin. It was never even a proper reunion in the first place (the Pumpkins split in 2000, and officially reformed in 2005), since guitarist James Iha and bassist D'arcy Wretzky ("a mean-spirited drug addict", according to a typically generous Corgan blog post) were not invited to take part.

continued...

And yet, despite this handicap, Corgan vows to plough on with another studio album. Why? What's the point? To record another so-so studio album for the benefit of a dwindling audience? Another arena tour, visiting slightly smaller venues than last time round? The Pumpkins were magnificent in their prime, but the longer they go on, the less dignified they become.

Not even Corgan appears to enjoy it anymore; he's taken to lashing out at his own fans. In 2008, in response to a genuinely aggrieved heckle ("Last night's show sucked, man") the vocalist waited until his teenage critic had left the stage before unleashing a retort of quite startling puerility: 'Oh by the way, I like that song you wrote: 'Take Your Dick Out Of My Ass And Stick It In My Mouth'."

Classy. But Corgan's stubborn refusal to give up is of a piece with today's ossified musical landscape. As we pointed out last week, there are depressingly few acts who won't blithely reform at the first wave of a promoters' cheque-book. Even bands who openly despised each other first time round, like Spandau Ballet, are on the comeback trail.

Everywhere you look, the old guard reign supreme. Duran Duran are heading into the studio with Mark Ronson. Lionel Richie's doing a run at the O2. It reeks of death, frankly, and bears out the dispiriting accuracy and prescience of The Daily Mash's headline: Music To Stay Exactly The Same Forever.

What we need is a shake-up, a musical sandblast. We need more acts capable of recognising when their time is up, of taking themselves out of circulation to make way for a new generation of artists.

Which bands, then - beside Smashing Pumpkins - would benefit from a dose of sober self-analysis - a calm look in the mirror followed by the sad, but ultimately cathartic, revelation: 'Yes, we were great once… now it's time to let it go'..?

This should be a feature in the magazine, with the bands people most want to give it up named and shamed!

Oasis. What is the point of them? They were never that great to start with and they're just going to go on releasing mediocre crap for the next 20 years. It was nostalgic rubbish to begin with and now they're milking the nostalgia or their own back catalogue. Maybe, Definitely!!!!!

Leave the Pumpkins alone. This is tragic news for the fans, but I for one am glad that Billy is continuing on. He is a talented musician who still has a lot to offer and is more than capable of creating another amazing album. Ultimately HE is the Pumpkins and it is his vision to do with as he sees fit. Moreover the Pumpkins are more than a band. There is a certain guiding philosophy that they bring to the table- an approach to music, a mode of creating, an honesty of emotion. By keeping the name alive he is simply maintaining the creative freedom that banner gives him. The Smashing Pumpkins have always been about breaking the rules and pursuing whatever musical/ artistic vision is most authentic to them/ him at the time. I for one respect Billy Corgan and his decision. This band has seen many changes in it's lineup over the years, but it is Billy's vision and Billy's talent that has anchored it all. I for one look forward to seeing where he goes next.

We wouldn't have to have this conversation if there were more new bands from the last ten years that people got excited about. All of these 80s/90s legacy bands are hanging around still simply because they're filling a gap in the market - quality music.

Duran are great, always growing..not always successfully, but then who does? Their determination and openness to learning should be something newer bands can learn from.. Don't get stuck making the same album again and again..like ACDC for instance, who have never sounded like anything changed.

Frank [Visitor] //March 26 2009 at 22:43
You people just jump on the 'we hate oasis' bandwagon for no other reason than to fit in with the rest of the brainwashed readers. While Oasis are certainly not anywhere what they were, they have had some great albums and continue to write fine songs. Also, why is it that a band like Keane gets so badly reviewed by this magazine and its purist readers? Everything good doesn't have to be washed with guitars and have a punk rebellious fever at its core. There have always been bands who write good pop tunes, so why do Keane get a barrage of abuse? People who read this magazine should broaden their horizons and open their minds to something more than 'just what is acceptable' to like according to the ideology of NME and its readership. Duffy? Now thats a different story.......

there are so many shite bands i dunno where to start but to the fannies who said the verve and the who...are you fuckin mental? i dread to think what your cd collection holds. it ain't about who's got the biggest fan base or who is deemed 'cool' by nme or the masses. if a band still love what they do and so do their fans, i say keep em. even if i do think they're shite

Whoever said KOL are sell-outs now because more people like them-your an idiot too. Whats wrong with being succesful? Finally, U2 and Grewn Day should join force again, then agree to never ever make music ever again.

Morrissey needs to go away for good. He used to be amazing, but now he's boring and predictable. Stale, stale old sound. Only difference is now he just seems an angry and jaded old fool. The poetry in his art has long gone, much like his wit.

I left a comment on NME's main page about Micheal Jackson two weeks ago. Never published! This one wont be either. NME = Radio 1 i.e. paid to say and play accordingly. Don't blame the pumpkins etc, a fair and balanced media would help new bands come through. Now 'fuck off' and there is your reason to ban this post.

I would have to agree that U2 and Oasis are both far past their expiration date. U2's last great record was "Achtung Baby" and Oasis really lost it during this decade.

I don't get why everyone seems to despise oasis on this site but oh well thats there choice, but for me keep on going until the music starts becoming shit. Oasis had one v. good album (Definitely Maybe), one attempt at one (Morning Glory) and have written about two good songs since (Lazy and Shock of the Lightning, albeit the latter being in the Morning Glory vein). Having Noel on the NME cover what, 5/6 times a year, may shift copies appealing to the lads programmed to forever remember their youth as they get older but? you know...there's little difference betwixt what Led Zepp were to their generation and what Oasis are to this, mass market heavy rockers that not everyone likes and NME shd. stop promoting the dinosaurs to let some of the other stuff in: the wayward, the wild (the weary), the more *radical* (if that word can be used any more)...who listens to Zep these days but 50-60 year old men? Thats' where oasis are going and NME in close pursuit these days
Ossification [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 05:48
Radiohead without a doubt. We have had about 80 wailing songs ('someone took my rattle away, boo-hoo!'), a couple of the earlier ones were catchy-ish but they've sure durn it do death. NME only liked them in the first place because the journos could see them getting popular, same with Coldplay - they've got obvious weaknesses and aren't an NME type band (which is more street, more mod...less middle class) but you journos at NME just thought you'd better give the thumbs up to someone out thar or you'd never sell any pippers.
bizmo [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 05:54
yeah, nme should split up. All the origiinal members have been replaced and it's like a cover band of the original now. bring back rock n roll! knock over the nmes tape recorder these days and you get vilified by mr smooth masquerading as rock boy and find the 'industry' has been tipped off against you, a la Craig Vines; or give the nme Man a bad look in an interview and get pasted in the mag (Borrell)...another reputation gone down in flames

"as if oasis were rubbish to begin with sounds like the oppinion of a middle class person, trying to be conteversial.just give up you'll never be like us" Nice one with the reverse-snobbery Mr Goss. All the nominations of bands only about 5 years old don't seem particularly relevant here. Lynrd Skynrd are a rather different case, and I think their decision to carry on is admirable more than anything. piercingobsidian [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 16:18
Yes, we need a musicle revolution to take over from all of these old bands. However, It is not the old bands fault that there is not one. It is not there fault that the younger generation does not have the bullocs to create one or to stand behind the new bands that are out now. You guys are just a bunch of boring wankers.

It seems unfair to penalise bands like this, nobody is in a position to restrict anyone’s freedom of expression. If bands/individuals still feel they’ve got more to offer, then so be it. Surely anything musical is enriching.
Mick [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 18:16
We should push out patronising NME journalists who live in a world of their own. Younger bands should push the old ones out. Not the other way around. Not 'ooh ooh...please retire and let us in'. It's a sad state of music when people twice their age are still twice as good. ...and these old timers sell your paper and your wages.

David [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 18:49
I reckon that while we're all awaiting something blistering original that will blow away the cobwebs of music like a hurricane, me might just be waiting for something that isn't going to happen. The age of the population is going up and up and everyone seems to want to hear the songs that they heard by the bands they adored when they were young, and unlike the 1970's and 80's, and even the 90's when popstars had a convenient habit of burning out rather than fading away, we've got 60 and 70 year olds still peddling out the same songs because the record companies cannot afford to gamble on leftfield acts that may just as likely flop as take over the world.
Typique [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 18:54

radiohead, the first three albums were great, then they took being pretentious to new heights.u2 - a few decent tracks on the new album but lets face it they stopped being relevant after 1991.kings of leon - sell outs, use somebody makes me cringe its like some cheesy title track to a john hughes teen comedy from 1985 - horrible.embrace they were a good band until they started ripping of coldplay.snow patrol what is the point of this lot,who would actually want to be in snow patrol?there so bland it's hard to muster up venom for them.glad the verve made a comeback though, and oasis and depeche mode are still top bands, whatever people say.

O....A....siiiiisss, dear god end already!
Mike [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 22:58
Led Zepplein are still huge to this day only had to look at their reunion to see that they have a huge amount of young fans aswell as old,Oasis however i dont reckon they have had any substancial number of new fans for a good 10 years,In summary youre a total idiot
mike [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 23:15
it wasn't even a reunion tour anyway. stopped reading after realising that you don't know what you are writing about.
mick [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 23:16
genuinely aggrieved heckle? the guy even said that he was "kidding". get your facts straight please.
Bono [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 23:23
Hey guys, you know there's not much love for the music my band makes here, but we are enjoyong ourselves. We guys bond while we play our music (bum etc), but we are so friendly we welcome guests such as yourself! Then we all can make music.
cieran [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 23:26
ok, whoever up there said lynyryd skynyrd and zz top should stop may be true but "cousin-shaggin" is a little uncalled for the kaisers are rapid and only realeased 3 albums so no to that and if anyone dares say muse they're getting some major slappage
blueczarina [Visitor] //March 27 2009 at 23:51
assuming "Bob from accounting" is referring to my posts- I'm not Billy and he does still have fans! I doubt Billy Corgan even reads NME.
Kerrdizzle [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 04:10
I forgot to add the Killers. That boner Brandon Flowers needs to go back to selling bluetooth at carphone warehouse. What's with all the Oasis bashing? Andy and Gem have breathed new life into the band. Consider them Oasis 2.0.
REICHNROLLWILLNEVERDIE [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 04:22
U2.......same old boring recipe for the last 2 decades, Metallica......gonna ruin the legendary status......Thank GOD nobody said Depeche Mode......They've STILL got it!
Jack McMack [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 04:48
Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2 because they seem to go for quantity not quality these days. I liked Blood Sugar Sex Magic and Achtung Baby, but c'mon, their contribution to music now is "Hello hello....Yea yea yea yeah!" (Vertigo) and "Ding dang ding ding dang..." or something like that (Around The World) all based on the same guitar (U2) and bass (RHCP) riffs. And these are their singles! And I couldn't care less if they continue/stop making music, but I am answering the question!!!!
Somatozed [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 07:22
Listen NME I have had it with your garbage. Yes your damned magazine is FULL of garbage. "Oh you should listen to Artic Monkeys", "oh you should listen to Babyshambles", "oh you should listen to any talentless three-chord tripe". Newsflash: some people like to be able to listen to music and just LISTEN! We don't need you to tell us what's acceptable and what's not. Quite frankly the bands you promote are shit! I like music that challenges my ears and speaks to my heart, and Billy Corgan makes that. I don't care if I'm the only one listening to it, he should still make it. Who are you, you sad antagonistic bastards, to tell an artist when it's time to "give up the ghost"? If you don't like it, don't listen. It's really that simple. And FYI - your facts are all wrong, which proves how amateurish and under-researched your lamentable magazine has become - "And yet, despite this handicap, Corgan vows to plough on with another studio album". Wrong, wrong WRONG!!! Corgan isn't working on an album, he gave that up with Zeitgeist, he is now going to concentrate on alternative forms of music release. Maybe, all things concluded, the "veteran act" that is NME should "give up the ghost". Any thoughts anyone?
Jim [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 07:23
I went to see Smashing Pumkins last year and it was painfully bad. They raced through the classics and turned every song of their latest album into a ten minute guitar-shag-athon. Corgan even said "Welcome to my party; you're all very lucky to be here". Twat
S [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 08:55
wow people really dont like oasis and u2...... i didnt think the beatles were still carrying on considering two of them are no longer with us..... long live oasis!
ketha [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 11:15
you'd have more of a case if you hadn't spent the last year trying to set the agenda by promoting shitty 'scene' bands. It's no wonder people are looking back when the best you can offer is Klaxons, Libertines et al. really good music won't appear in a climate where music is the servant of fashion, and not visa versa. You try and claim that utter buffoons like Lightspeed Champion and La Roux are going to replace the old guard. If the music was any good you wouldn't have this issue.
this [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 11:21
oasis make great music, one more album then i think they'll call it a day. i really dont get why so many people dont like them when they've done so much for music. you cant deny that whether you like them or not and considering how good thier last album was and those unreleased tracks yet to appear i say another album isnt to much to ask. Also im 17 not an old man.
Criss [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 12:16
U2, Rolling Stones, Coldplay (but they COULD become better again - couldn't they? - well, I guess not). Simply every band with members older than 55. Whatever, music taste is so diverse anyway...
chuck_m [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 16:11
sonic youth? u2 can't get it up anymoor. the cure, are they still around? why? prodigy should definitely check out, their new material is crap. many ppl say oasis, but they don't exist anymore i think. michael jackson, can he still carry a tune or you're just selling stuff with his image for the remains of his cult?
alex [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 16:14
foals should give up. 1 album is far too much.awful band
Metal Man [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 16:14
Pete Doherty and any libertines offshoots should just fuck off, they were untalented, posing fashion-boy wankers to begin with and now they ALREADY seem like pathetic has-beens hanging on to past successes.
ranger [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 16:59
the black and white minstrels should reform
Anon [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 17:58
Oasis, U2, Coldplay, Rolling Stones, Green Day They are the cancer that is killing good music.
Metal Man's friend [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 19:15
Why has not metal mans comment bashing gay shits libertines been approved? approve it at once for it is verily a virtuous comment that was made!
Tony [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 21:15
Radiohead for sure. I believe they could easily release next year their previous album, and nobody would realize.
humdinger [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 21:36
people should be allowed to make a living how they want, plus what else would we do if we didn't have things to hate we're just zone out to all the crap band out there anyhow
bluesilver [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 22:50
U2 - it seems the only person Bono is really interested in is Bono. Yawn. Past it. Boring. Retire already.
Rhys [Visitor] //March 28 2009 at 23:03
Oasis. So bland and boring. They've been recycling their old music over and over again - get some new ideas... or just stop with the music. please.
[Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 00:01
Oasis, U2, The Cure, The Rolling Stones, and Dylan should definitley stop, unless they find a way to sound somewhat interesting again.
gruji-d [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 02:36
morrissey, innit
Psychedelic [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 05:51
Snooze...another pointless predictable article from a pointless magazine. NME RIP.
[Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 07:16
All rap, all of it name an artist or group of people get rid of all of them. Cant say band cause they dont play instruments.. I have a drum machine system and i sing in a mic and sadly it sounds the same as all that shite. My vote is to every rap artist out there.
[Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 10:01
Oasis are the greatest British band ever! I'd like to see The Strokes disband along with Franz Ferdinand.
Zoe [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 10:41
Blur, U2, Coldplay, Greenday, Manics, Keane, Kaiser Chiefs,
Sam [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 11:22
Why do people keep saying Oasis? they've just sold out a massive stadium tour. If new bands weren't so terrible these would be gone by now. Everyone seems to be making music but none of it is any good!
Kate [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 11:37
GLASVEGAS!!!! Worst band I've ever heard. Ever.
iskaldur [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 14:02

U2 and Radiohead. If only we had more bands like Oasis
[Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 16:25
BLUR i do like them but know there new stuff will be a big disappointment. I think you should leave amazing art.
sam [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 18:02
when did nme corp start offering such trite for publication. theres opinion pieces, and then theres just blatent biased garb. i thought as music fans we are supposed to support artists for fuck sakes. for the benefit and whatever credibility your brand name still has, how bout sharpening up those editorial skills and employing staff with at least a few IQ points.
calum [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 20:00
u2, nickelback, coldplay, stereophonics
george [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 20:17
metallica(tour only dont record), korn(just stop all together), u2(see metallica and stay away from new material), motley crue(vince neil's voice sucks now), unfortunately smashing pumpkins(i would only want to see the original line up doing the older stuff anyway) Guns n' Roses(lose the cornrows, the extra weight, get back your old line up and tour, he can still write music but we dont know how old those vocal tracks are)
Music Fan [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 21:23
Give it up U2, go retire or do some charity shit.
dan! [Visitor] //March 29 2009 at 21:55

[Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 02:12
RADIOHEAD?! METALLICA? Are you Insane? .. Metallica has done so much for metal music .. and I'm not even going to mention what Radiohead has done for music in general because the list is endless ... besides they are one of the few trully great fantastic bands today .. I personally think that Kiss should stop playing .. they were never good , and they still aren't .. And Oasis used to be acceptable but now they suck ... that's only my opinion ..
BT Schonewald [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 09:00
Metallica, Iron Maiden, Guns 'N' Roses, Limp Bizkit (!!!), Nickelback, The Verve...
Jojo [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 10:26
U2 and Colplay - Definitely. Oasis - no way. not yet. and the new album is extremely good - totally love it!
kwisj [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 10:41
God, U2 should definitely go away, and fukkin Take That should fuck right off, and take that bladder Williams with them!!! And someone should push Guns and Roses down the stairs...
Paul [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 11:46
U2 definitely, and Oasis. They've not recorded much of note sine '94.
Captain_Ralph [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 12:58
"I think the Beatles and the Ramones should call it a day" uhm, i'm pretty sure that 3/4 of the ramones are all dead, i think they gave up a whle ago!
Jeff from Rhode Island [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 13:03
Why should an artist ever stop doing what they love doing? That would be like asking a painter to stop painting. Who are you to tell someone to retire?
Skeldano [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 13:17
I don't think anyone should be stopped from playing music etc, rather the moribund recording industry needs to stop giving only the middle of the road rubbish (U2, Oasis, etc etc...) blanket marketing because of the appeal to the lowest common denominator (and so sell loads). Its just a business now. Come on youngsters, do what we did in 76 and do it yourself, punk style. We changed the world of music then and we didn't even have the internet... lazy bloody kids
evie [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 13:30
Coldplay. its just pice of crap :///
Chris from Virginia [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 14:46
What a stupid article. Luke Lewis - your best writings are behind you, you should just give up, find another profession. Playing music is what these guys do for a fucking living. If Billy Corgan wants to go on calling it Smashing Pumpkins and play to 1000 people then let him. Don't listen and don't go to the show if you don't like it. As long as a musician can continue to make a living at it it's their right to do it as long as they want.
nico rebel [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 14:50
Coldplay should quit as I think they are the most mediocre, boring band ever.
Subbeh [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 15:54
Loved the Pumpkins first time round and saw them live not long back, an absolute joke. Corgan should get together with Axl Rose and form the most knob headed super group in history. Surely its about time the Prodigy were put out of their (and our) misery as well.
dan! [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 18:47
while were at frank sinatra and elvis should def call it a day, what have they ever done for music?
Black_Milk [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 20:07
Anyone who suggests a band should give up based on how old they are is not a music fan but a fad following fashion victim. GTFO and stop pretending to be into music you poseur.
tom [Visitor] //March 30 2009 at 21:41
inxs.. when hutch died they should had stopped.
Oggi [Visitor] //March 31 2009 at 14:58
For all you ignorant midgets who cry that The Beatles should call it a day, The Beatles split way back in 1970. So, they have given up some 39 years ago, for your personal info. I cannot believe a person could be SOOOO musically ignorant... As per which band should call it the quits, as long as a band has the creative potential to write and record music and this music has even 1 follower - go on! Don't give up. And once again, when did The Beatles call it the quits??? :):):):) Do you still remember which year was mentioned a few rows above? :):) Retard, ignorant apes...
ellie [Visitor] //April 1 2009 at 05:54
haha who said the beatles? and since when do so many people hate oasis?!
Gaz [Visitor] //April 1 2009 at 09:55
Hmmmm. No-ones mentioned REM. I'm impressed...
Scoobysnaxx [Visitor] //April 1 2009 at 21:36
Smashing Pumpkins were always Billy Corgan's band so to be honest little has changed. However AC/DC's last album Black Ice went to straight to number one in 28 countries, mainly cause AC/DC are fucking awesome despite the fact very little has changed since they started in the early 70's. Imagine if they gave up post Highway to Hell for being too samey....
WacoKid [Visitor] //April 3 2009 at 17:44
"leave to the good music to the working class" [sic] - and you don't get more working class that Noel G living in Primrose Hill.

What makes me laugh is how almost every person on here hates oasis. But who voted them best british band at the nme awards? Your a bunch of fucking hypocrites who are as fickle as this magazine can be at times. Go and bore someone else with your hateful comments. If you don't fucking like oasis, don't spend your fucking time bashing them and then voting for them. Lets faCe it if oasis weren't around you still be bashing some other band, who you used to like last year but you just decided you got bored of them for the time being . Its the same with all these poisonous people on the internet who just want to bring a band down for the sake of them just not liking them. OASIS ARE THE BEST THERE WAS THE BEST THERE IS AND, THE BEST THERE EVER WILL BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
