NME Festivals Blog 2009 - Festival action, all year round - Festival action, all year round

In the wake of Glastonbury 2006 organiser Michael Eavis fretted about the creeping gentrification of the festival: "People say we're getting middle-class. The demographic is changing and it's worrying. We need to get the youngsters back."

The result of this all this self-questioning was Jay-Z's headline set in 2008, which resulted in a heap of positive press - but also the slowest ticket sales in over a decade.

That experience seems to have shocked the Eavises back into conservatism. The full Glastonbury 2009 line-up, which was announced yesterday, includes such heritage acts as Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, The Specials, Spinal Tap and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

On Sunday, on the Pyramid Stage alone, festival-goers will be entertained by Madness, Tom Jones, Tony Christie and Status Quo. It will surely be the first time in the festival's history that the greatest combined age of the day hasn't belonged to the Glastonbury Town Band.

Of course, there will be plenty of other, fresher acts to enjoy - Passion Pit and The Big Pink on the John Peel stage, the mesmerising Marina & The Diamonds (and, er, The Glitterati, for some reason) on the Queen's Head. But does anyone else think a lot of the line-up feels weirdly geriatric?

I was definately thinking this when I read the line up yesterday! Was totally not impressed. You see these amazing younger orientated bands such as Pendulum on The Other Stage and then you see the OAP Tom Jones and Tony Christie on the bill. It just feels wrong lol. Weak line up this year, really glad I didn't get tickets!
Rich [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 11:38
Will be a great festival, but I'll just be staying away from the Main Stage on the Sunday (apart from the Blur reunion). The other and John Peel stages though look good - will still be awesome!!!
Joe [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 11:46
As a 19 year old, these are the exact kind of bands I want to see at glastonbury. If I wanted to see Indie/Hip-Hop/etc I would but a ticket to Reading/Download/another youth orientated festival.
Charlie [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 11:51
There is deffinately something in there for everyone, which is probably what they are going for but it could do with an injection of more new bands on the smaller stages but I am realy happy with the diverse headliners
Mark [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 12:01
Best line up ever for a festival this year and considering! The other big 3 Festivals line up glad I bought a ticket!
andy [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 12:08
Maybe the lineup highlights the fact that there aren't many 'young' acts that can pull off headlining a festival. The musical landscape is littered with bands/artists who promised so much and then put out a poor second album.
String [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 12:08
Come on, there is something for everybody. OK Friday at the Pyramid looks tame to me but you just scoot off to one of the other stages. It's not a case of standing in front of the main stage and seeing the commercial successes of 2008. It's an event and I for one am chuffed that I am going. And I'm reasonably old and bald! Now then, which way to the Dance Tent.
Ash [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 12:48
I'm an 18 year old, this is my first Glastonbury. I couldn't be more stoked! Bruce Springsteen is one of the greatest live acts I've ever seen. And I've seen Nine Inch Nails, Blink 182, Leonard Cohen, Rage against the Machine, Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon and Metallica amongst others before. I may be an exception, but this will be one of the most fun festivals ever. Thousands upon thousands of people bellowing out tunes to the likes of Tom Jones and Madness. It'll be great. All you haters can bugger off to V for younger music. P.S I'm going to Reading too, so I can have my teenage kicks :P
Markodw [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 12:54
fuck glastonbury. come to benicassim
Dan [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:01
So yeah, some of these bands are for the older generations, but that doesn't mean they're no good! Admittedly I won't be at the Main Stage too much, being only 18 and having lots of acts to see that interest me (La Roux, White Lies, Enter Shikari, Gaslight Anthem, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Doves, Bloc Party etc), but I'll definitely be there for Status Quo and Bruce Springsteen. Glasto is better than Reading/Leeds etc in that it's not afraid to diversify a lot, and it keeps on doing it. You're never going to see The Boss at Reading/Leeds are you!
Una [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:03
I think this is a good line up. This is my 3rd Glasto and it is all about the mixture of music. If we wanted all the main stream crap we would be going to V etc. Glasto is about the whole musical mix and that is what we are getting. I do think the Other Stage is lacking what other years had. It will be great though as it always is
Mattie [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:04
Unlike other festivals, Glastonbury offers more than just the bands on the bill. Going to Glastonbury is an experience that you can't experience at any other UK festival. There's so much to see do that having the most amazing line up full of clashes would actually make me enjoy the festival less because I'd be running around through mud trying to see everything. As hippy-ish as it sounds, Glastonbury is all about the atmosphere. It's not about going there to see a band in particular - perhaps why they never release the line up until nearer the time. The festival itself can sell tickets - unlike other UK festivals which require decent acts. What else is there to do at Reading if there's no bands on? At least at Glastonbury you can go off and see some weird/interesting nonsense. That said, I'm not going to Glastonbury this year because I am a student and can't afford it. I do think the line up is pretty poor if you ask me. But then I am a lover of new music.
Leckie [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:13
I can't bloody wait, it's the best line up in years and if you don't want to go see any of the headliners on the main stage then there is plenty else where to see. I still so please i was given the Glasto bug and i don't want it to leave!
Chris [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:17
After the Jay-Z debacle, Michael Eavis said he wanted 'the NME crowd' back, well your right, he isn't going to do that by getting Bruce Springsteen, the ultimate 'Dads favourite'. The line-up at Leeds is much more geared to the 'NME crowd.' Obviously the headliners are only a small detail in the whole experience, but still dissapointing, especially as this will be my first Glasto.
Mark [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:17
The kids are not ok. Their music tastes leave much to be desired. As for introducing more "hip hop", because supposedly, that's what the kids listen to, all I can say is that hip hop artists tend to be terrible live performers.
Chris [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:18

Glasto is not just for the music, although it's the main reason for going. I'm just gutted Blur and the Prodigy are playing at the same time!! Why not have all ages at the festival? I go to V festival and I see all ages there too, I don't think the line-up is that good for V this year, but are still going cause the atmosphere is better than the local pub!
Chris [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:26
I don't know about anybody else but the appeal of Glasto to me is the older audience. There's so much more than the bands to enjoy at Glasto anyway, something which the drones at Reading and V will no doubt be unaware of. The older crowd invariably means not having to put up with a bunch of sixteen year olds pissed on cheap Cider and setting fire to the Toilets ala Leeds. Anybody who judges Glasto purely on the musical lineup is missing the point, though I think the eclectic policy is one of it's greatest strengths.
Philipooooo [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:55
LEEDS!!! LEEDS!!! LEEEEDSAAAGGHHH!!!
Louise [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 13:58
Andy makes a good point - what do you want from a HEADLINER at a festy - one and half albums of stuff that sounds a lot like the rest of the bill earlier in the day did, or a diverse mix of classics and new material from an act 3 or 4 albums in (or more)? I know what I prefer.
[Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 14:07
I think the line-up is pretty good personally. Some bigger, old school acts on the main stage and the newer acts on the smaller stages. Plus Blur reforming on the Sunday. Going to be a great festival, bring it on!
skelter [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 14:22
graet line up!! kasabian right before bruce cant get better den dat!! wud of loved a bitta of oasis at dis year tho!!
Chris [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 14:23
I believe that glasto has become too middle class. However the eavises may be trying to purposefully tap into the middle class audience because "the kids" will prefer to see indie/dance/rnb/metal at other festivals like reading, v and download. If manchester orchestra has been booked then all is forgiven

At first look I was fuming. The line up just has no balls. Compared to Reading this year, there's just nothing to me that leaps out. At second look, I begin to see the advantages, John Peel Stage in particular, as well as Dance East. I still think it's wrong to release the lineup after the refund date, mind.
Ed [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 14:39
There's a certain amount of ageism from a few, but Glasto was alwasy about a diverse line-up, far more so than Reading/Leeds. And it's not as conservative as the V Festival. I haven't been since 2000, when I moved to Scotland, but the atmosphere was always better at Glastonbury than T in the Park.
Mr Fender [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 14:49
FUCK OFF! I'm 23 and would sooner listen to Neil Young than half the shite you promote in your magazine!
[Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 15:09
Glasto is a great festival, the main stage never has the best line up. It would be good to see some more current major acts headline The Pyramid like Foo Fighters, Green Day and The Prodigy for example - Leeds line up is better this year. Come on Glasto get it sorted!
JIM [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 15:39
i'M 26...I'LL BE WATCHING A LOT OF THE OLDER ACTS AT GLASTO THIS YEAR PURELY BECAUSE A LOT OF NEW BANDS JUST DON'T HAVE IT. IF YOU GO SEE KASABIAN THIS YEAR JUST TAKE A MINUTE OUT TO REALLY LISTEN AND WATCH THEM...THEY ARE ONE OF THE MOST OVER-RATED BANDS IN MY OPINION. BLAND SONGS/LYRICS AND ABSOLUTELY NO STAGE PRESCENCE WHAT SO EVER..
Sam [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 15:42
I think this line-up is perfect for us young'uns! Personally I am sooooo excited! We are all going to be able to see bands we grew up listening to because of our parents, when most of us never thought we would be able too! Roll on June 24th! Woop woop!
2plus2isjoe [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 15:49
Honestly, anyone who'd choose Reading/Leeds over Glastonbury this year is brain dead. Middle-aged lineup? I think you mean eclectic.
Jamie Hood [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 15:51
Thats an amazing line up, its so diverse!!!
Blah [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 15:54
Where else do you get to see Neil Y, Crosby Stills and Nash, The Boss mixed with Passion Pit. I think we would be more disappointed if it was the other way around - these folk are history. We should be tipping our hats, not wishing for another Reading/Leeds line-up, we have one of those already.
Alan Woodhouse [Member] //May 26 2009 at 16:10
Green Day at Glastonbury? Give me a break, They'd be laughed offstage. The same arguments take place every year - a lot of the time the music's a hindrance, there's so much else to do and see. I love Neil Young, so happy about that. The Boss - not a big fan, but atmosphere will be great. Not bothered either way about Blur, but they are an obvious choice, and I know many people who are beyond excited about this. It will be great, it always is. Unless it pours down.
Nazr [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 16:35
Not enough ATP-hipster acts!
Phil [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 16:35
Glastonbury has got all that reading and leeds has plus loads more. You can see a few old names in there but there not exactly unknown to the new generation of music! Even then there is Blur, prodigy, pendulum plus many more bands that any young person would love to see
Oscar [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 16:52
to dismiss the music of Neil Young, and Bruce Springsteen as middle aged is foolish beyond belief...these songwriters have defined popular music in a way many of the younger bands have not and probably will not...both acts, and their songs are as relevant today as they were 20 or 30 years ago. I love many new bands but I would more happily part with this much money to hear music as valuable as theirs than to go and see Kings Of Leon for example...and Youth & Young Manhood is one of my favourite albums of all time.
IBlameAlex [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 17:45
Well what do we have here? Namely, another piece of idiocy from the world's most stupid music weekly. Who really gives a shit if Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young were popular 30 years ago? Does it detract from their strength as headliners? I really don't think so. If Luke Lewis actually LOOKED at the line up, he would see that interspersed with the older big hitters are the best of the younger acts (Brand New, The Maccabees, Little Boots, Passion Pit etc). So I really think it is unfair to accuse Glastonbury of pandering to the middle aged. All in all, this is a piece of badly thought out, puerile, twattish garbage from the world's most stupid publication. Before any accusations of being past it, I'M 14 YEARS OLD.
Glimmers_of_hope [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 17:48
As always, it's a line up which has something for everyone. I love glasto it's amazing. I love new music and I think there is easily enough to be exciting along with some big sing-alongs on the main stage. There are going to be a few suprises as well to look forward too.
Luke Lewis [Member] //May 26 2009 at 17:48
@IBlameAlex - I agree with you. Perhaps if you'd read my final paragraph before exploding with rage...
jason [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 18:29
how is the line up middle aged? maybe on the pyramid stage but thats it. I completley disagree .
Dan [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 18:53
Personally I think the main stage should be left to so-called 'heritage' acts. Neil Young, The Boss and Blur have an abundance of tunes and stamina to keep the crowd going with. Springsteen in particular could still outlast a lot of the younger bands on the stage. We've seen in the past bands like The Killers and Arctic Monkeys flounder as headline acts simply because they haven't got that many tunes compared to the bigger rock heavyweights.
glenn [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 18:55
I first went in the early 80's and it was a breath of fresh air to experience such a mixture of different music and other entertainment. However it is a reality that there are so many other festivals now concentrating on a particular kind of music that Glastonbury has to focus on the customers it thinks it can appeal to. Frankly I lost interest when they turned their nose up at dnce music. I like a mixture of top class acts, Tom Jones, Orbital, The Cure, The Orb, Royksop, New Order....I know they aren't all around these days,,,,,,maybe that's the problem. Labout has pretty much eliminated muscians on the dole. Maybe that affects the kind of "new" music we are seeing.
Matt [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 20:00
This article is TOTALLY MISLEADING. Tinchy Stryder, Calvin Harris, Mr Hudson (Kanye West), Pendulum, Prodigy, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Dizzee Rascal, Ting Tings, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, La Roux, Wiley, Glasvegas, Kasabian, 2 Many DJs etc etc etc. Come on NME, get you facts straight...
SteveDave [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 20:35
Middle aged? Balls. I've never seen the NME Board so united on one topic. Everyone loves this line up.
jt [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 20:57
whoever said friday at the pyramid is a bit tame has not been to the recent specials gigs where the front of venue is not for the faint hearted but come see for yourself you might enjoy yourself.
Magicbusjim [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 21:09
Legendary line up, but it's not all about the commercial headliners, Glasto is another world compared to other festivals...Nick Cave, Dig yourself...cannot wait!
K.F. [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 21:18
im starting to worry about Glasto. i think Eavis is starting to lose it. after the disgrace that was Jay-Z i thought hed go back to a proper Glasto. but this years line-up seems overly trying to prove a "diverse" point. its starting to disappear up its own arse, it reeks of pretentiousness ever since Jay-Z. Sadly i think Oxegen has overtaken it as Europes best all round festival.
graham [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 21:45
worst line up in a long time, where the hell are radiohead? how did reading get them and glasto never. thinking of giving my dad my ticket.

It's not a mind-blowing line up. The festival is much more than the line up at the big stages but still, not the excitement of previous years. Bit bankable and I think Glasto can do better than this. Will still watch it and will be going next year. Still one of the greatest festivals - a totally lovely trip.
Quinner [Visitor] //May 26 2009 at 23:33

@Luke Lewis, okay sorry for that little outburst, over the last few years I've probably made the NME more money than anyone, but I was just a bit riled at the general way the article was put together. Looking at previous line ups (2007 had The Who, Shirley Bassey, Madness and the whole lot on the Sunday, 2008 had Leonard Cohen and Joan fucking Baez) i just thought that it was quite wrong to try and accuse the festival of being 'conservative' and backwards, when you've got bands like Little Boots and Metronomy on there as well.
Powderfinger [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 00:08

if youve ever been to a festival you will be aware that you miss more than half of the acts you want to see its about hanging around and getting f**ked and if youre lucky you catch a few decent preformances as well
Kripes almighty [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 01:11
I'm most looking forward to the second band on, on The Other Stage on Sunday - a band called The Boxer Rebellion. People are gonna walk away from that set thinking the world has changed... for the better.

Jock [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 12:09
How any festival that has two of the greatest, revered and influential singer/songwriters in the history of popular music, who both are still recording, could be considered outdated is beyond me. Great music is ageless and as long as they're performing their material to a decent level, there's no lack of relevance whatsoever.
Courtney [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 12:30
I think the line up is a bit too middle aged. I think having Bjorn Again is just terrible though. I think Blur headlining and Spinal Tap on the mainstage will be great though. Bloc Party shoulda been on the main stage
More Like Old Age!!! [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 13:26
I would say Springsteen & Neil Young are more OAP than middle aged. The only OAP I'd like to see at Glasto is Macca! Personally, I'd have been impressed if proper middle aged bands like Green Day or Foo Fighters were the headliners.
Andy [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 13:32
By far the best festival line up this year. People like Neil Young got more talent in their little toe than the majority of the leeds/reading/v lineup put together. The killers and arctics etc had 1 decent album and suddenly think they can headline a festival....what's the world coming to?
ClareCHAOS [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 14:19

Jay [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 16:18
I can see why some of the acts playing on the major stages may be getting abuse from reading and Leeds fans, but have you ever been to Glastonbury? There is such a variety of things to do that it doesn't really matter if Status Quo are playing on the Pyramid Stage because at the same time there will be something amazing happening elsewhere. At reading you have the arena and one silent disco, at Glastonbury you have hundreds of places playing music and a huge selection of dance tents that are all aimed at young people. Yes, Rage were sick at Reading last year, but I couldn't help but feel like i was part of a business in the middle of a city whilst being there, where as at Glastonbury you feel completely detatched from the real world. I'd go to Glastonbury even if Lost Prophets were headlining. P.S Can't wait for Roots Manuva, 2manydjs, Bon Iver, Animal Collective, The Prodigy, Neil Young, The Horrors, Rusko, Yeah Yeah yeahs, Fucked Up, Regina Spektor, The Maccabees, Deadmau5, The Soft Pack, The Big Pink and Metronomy.
[Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 16:26
The Kings Of Leon, Arctis Monkeys and Radiohead have already headlined Glastonbury so maybe reading is just a little slow... and didn't everyone heckle them when KOL were booked to headline for being too young?
Brett [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 18:40
My reaction to the line up? Oh My god what a load of utter bollocks! But nevermind, I'll still end up having the best time ever by a country mile, its Glasto, its unique and its brilliant. Even if I wont be watching much music this year theres so much more to do!!!
Nelly [Visitor] //May 27 2009 at 20:44
Really chuffed that I have a ticket I am actually wetting myself with excitement. Glastonbury can not be compared to any other festival - its one of a kind! The whole atmosphere is worth the ticket price alone. This is my third time and pleased that the lineup is not the same as the others!!!!! I am not middle aged - I am 27 - I just happen to have good taste in music. I do have to question what the f**k is Dizzee Rascal doing there?! - he is a complete waste of space - you can't call what he does music - its just noise. Looking forward to Regina though. She is awesome :) Roll on 24th June...

I'm flying in all the way from Singapore for this gig, and too know that Neil Young and Springsteen are supposed to be the main acts.... well, thats just Fxxxxd up. Excuse my French, but that's just wrong. No disrespect intended to the old legends, but it's not fair. I've been dreaming about going to Glasto, and I've throwin in so much money to make this happen, and the line up wasn't even reelased when they started selling tix... I gotto say that's just f.. nvm. There's something grotesquely wrong with where Glasto's heading. I hope I'll be proven wrong...

Terrible, terrible line-up. Nothing else to say. Gutted.
Dan [Visitor] //May 28 2009 at 18:42
To be honest I'm not that impressed by the headliners. I've never heard any Neil Young songs, the only Springsteen song I like is Dancing in the dark, and I always favoured Oasis over Blur. But there's plenty of other good acts, and one of the great things about festivals is you get to see bands you wouldn't normally go and see....Rolf Harris anyone?

Fleet Foxes are a great band but Crosby Stills and Nash are retirement rock ? Have you ever listened to these 2 bands ? Again, anyone who likes Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver is going to want to see Neil Young and Roger McGuinn (unless they have rocks in their head).
Snoop Ted [Visitor] //June 11 2009 at 10:37
Considering the Other Stage is bigger that every other festivals main stage I think this is a pretty sweet line-up - pleanty of up and comers, Neil Young - God Father of Grunge, Bruce Sprinsteen - one of the most celebrated songwriters of a generation and erm Blur

Anyone who complains about the lineup would appear to hate music in general. If there's not something for you, you're either a metal-head who hates everything else (Even then, Spinal Tap!) or somebody without any taste in music. There's something for everything, just look at the full lineup, not just the Pyramid Stage. Ah well, if there are haters, don't go. I'll let you know how amazing it was while you're sitting at home bored :)

Its not just about the music! Glastonbury festival is awsome I could happily go and watch no bands and still have the best 5 days of the year. See you there ;)

I've seen Bruce Springsteen live a few times and he is phenomenal live on stage. He's playing for nearly 3 hours on Saturday night and anyone's that going would be mad to miss it.
