NME Festivals Blog 2009 - Festival action, all year round - Festival action, all year round

T In The Park is the anti-Glastonbury.

There's no baby yoga. "Healing yurts" are thin on the ground. You'll search in vain for an artfully dilapidated stall selling organic buckwheat pancakes for £7 a pop.

No, the Scottish bash is all about the music. Well, that and the drinking. And the inflatable penises.

Happily, this year's event was as incident-packed and unpretentious as ever.

continued...

Blur played their "last gig". Lily Allen offered the crowd some oblique sex tips (would it kill her to provide diagrams?) and Bloc Party's Matt Tong whipped a banana out of his pants, in response to a fan request to glimpse his "dong".

It was all so sexually charged, in fact, I half expected Seasick Steve to start dry-humping the stage, Vanilla Ice-style.

If you haven't seen our coverage already, you'll find backstage video interviews with the likes of Doves, Regina Spektor and The Streets at NME.COM/video - and a bumper T In The Park photo gallery at NME.COM/photos.

But enough plugging of our "content". What were your highlights of the weekend?

James were amazing at the weekend, shame so many bands pulled out this year, what was that about?? Line up was poor this year, and will need to be significantly better for me to be back next year
Lisa [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 15:58
Where is the footage of James at T In The Park?
Jo [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 16:03
Ting Tings RUINED sat on NME stage if your late you shouldn't be allowed to play. Poor planning that Jane's Addiction only got time to play 7 songs. All wrong.
kieran [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 19:44
Anyone manage to see of Montreal?
Leave your bones [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 21:17
james were the best, as always! Tim, Jim, Larry, Dave, Saul, Mark and Andy- you made my day and the festival rock. :D:D
Corrie [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 21:38
I made the Matt Tong flag and got his banana!!
Fin [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 23:09
Kind of gutted at the pics and videos on NME.com and pretty much every other site that's covered the festival to be honest - all my favourite acts of the weekend haven't been featured! Foals were just insanely good in the King Tuts tent on Saturday, Beardyman was a stunning experience in the Slam tent, Nine Inch Nails were superb headlining the NME stage, and Mumford & Sons were delightful. The headliners this year were guff - total Radio 1 shite - and it's a shame you've not commented more on the smaller stages and the better acts that were on this year.
Jaime [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 23:27
Quite a bit of filler this year what with The Saturdays playing a lengthy slot at King Tut's (?!!) and The Game playing an even longer one on the NME stage (he cancelled). The Specials, The Streets and Seasick Steve made up for it though.
Dizzy McPhee [Visitor] //July 13 2009 at 23:55
Courteeners were amazing! Saw them in the King Tuts tent on Sat night. Awesome!
MOYO [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 00:56
WAS DISSAPOINTED I COULD'NT SEE KINGS OF LEON ON TV, TALK ABOUT POOR PLANNING
marc [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 08:35
So, when does the NME start with a proper festival coverage again?
irish boy [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 08:39
...what about oxegen... mars vol were brill so was nick cave and we got a longer set from blur :)
Scott [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 10:02
What a rubbish festival. That was my 4th T and compared to other UK festivals (Download for exampe) it falls way short. Line up really weak. Organisation and site rules - terrible. What was the crowd control cattle gates all about? Everyone still ended up crushed as they wouldn't let people flow. No camping stoves and gazeebos even though there was plenty space. Take a look around T and learn from the rest of the UK. They definitely do it better. Despite that Blur, NIN, Friendly Fires and Pendulum were excellent.
sum [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 10:34
Metronomy was a absolute riot. AMAZING. I'm really upset that T is over for another year. Just bought my ticket for next year.
mindy [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 11:37
the nachos were shite, bands were shite, waiting on bands that never played was shite... everything was shite.
Mike Shank [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 11:42
Twin Atlantic were the absolute diamond among the rough find this weekend. What a band, Scotland's brightest hope!
phil "the t" petrie, arbroath [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 12:46
can't believe some of those comments about t being rubbish, have u never heard the saying "its what u make of it", well me personally i had a great time, jason miraz and the manics in king tuts being personel highlights, 1 complaint, too many jobsworth stewards, i.e. walkin up to them and they,re puttin there cap on like the polis, WHERE'S YOUR BAND/TICKET ETC, come on guys its a festival, lighten up
scotty [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 12:47
i wasnt there but it did look a bit bollocks compared to glasto n saying that i was at slane for oasis and the was a bit drabb aswell look out for suicide dolphin bombers in 2010
Sarra [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 13:10
This was my 1st TITP and couldn't wait for KoL. After seeing them I was really disappointed in their performance, they just weren't into it. The Killers and Blur on the other hand were amazing, blew my socks off!!!!
Grant [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 13:17
yeah bad organisation, had to rely on word of mouth for cancellations and even then was not informed of horrors pulling out so watched some bag of shite thinking there was a delay. the pit at the front of the main stage is really frustrating. you pretty much have to que to get in from the side during the set beforehand when you really have no time to wait between getting a drink and seeing another band.
Garry Boy [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 13:26
Too many new bands in the line up. Would it kill them to get the New York Dolls or JAMC in there somewhere. I feel the festival suffered from dropping its Pet Sounds arena this year, I think Mogwai and Nick Cave would have been better suited in there than where they were. On the other hand, The Manics was a life changing experience and Nicky winked at my girlfriend :)
Char [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 14:35
First time at T. Loved every second. Highlights for me; Jason Mraz, The Script, The Killers & Keane. Was slightly disappointed with KOL - it was as if they just couldn't be arsed. I know they were having sound issues but still....the only time they showed any emotion was when Caleb decided to smash his guitar, throw it in the crowd & storm off stage.... Bring on T 2010!
frustrated [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 14:41
Has any1 got photos of the couple that were dressed up in popcorn from friday t in the park
sam [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 16:15
yeah yeah yeahs, mogwai and 2manydjs - easily the highlight of my weekend.
Hoffa [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 16:42
Toatlly agree with Sarra KoL where pretty mince by thier high standards, Killer where awesome and the Gaslight Anthem are my new favorite band what a set for 2pm!!!
Visitor [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 16:55
NME should take note of some of these comments. TITP was a travesty this year- far too expensive, not a great line-up, technical problems, lots of bands cancelling with no word given afterwards. The problem? Too many festivals on the same weekend. Used to be that T was the only gig on that weekend- now they share the bands with oxegen on alternate days. This is leading to lacklustre performances from the bands, technical difficulties etc. The ting tings literally texted in their performance- they looked exhausted and that came across to the crowd. The solution? These bands need to wise up and choose t in the park or oxegen- don't try and kill all the celts in one weekend because it just isn't working. This will sadly be my last T, and I'm an old timer from the strathclyde park days. But I hear rock ness is pretty good...
Bruce [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 17:30
I had an amazing time, all these comments about not being able to get near the front or the crowd in the pits etc. Heres a tip go in a band early and you will get to the front! Glasvegas, Kings Of Leon, Blur, Elbow were all amazing. Great party atmosphere as well, celebrated my 18th there on the Thursday and loved it. However compared to Reading (the only other festival i've been to) the organisation of the thing was poor. Why the fuck do you need your ticket on you all the time if you have a wristband?! Still great fun, and isn't fun what festivals are all about?
david [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 18:35
I'm in that there picture!!! So happy that i touched him. Blur were amazing but too short. The pickpockets were absolute fucking pricks, got my wallet and phone stolen. Line-up wasn't as good as last year but still loved it. Specials had the most jubilant crowd ive ever seen. There should be some way of getting the news of cancellations to the campsite tho coz the horrors was gutting. I think ill go to glasto next year.
Samantha [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 18:49
My friend Corrie was the girl with the Tong's Dong poster and got the Banana! It was AMAZINGGGG! I love Bloc Party forever!
Dauphinemichelle [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 19:55
Agree that KoL were disappointing, espececially after Franz Ferdinand who put on a good show. My friend and I stayed for 3 or 4 songs of the KoL set and then decided to leave... Blur and Killers on good form. And I'm definitely not a fan but Lady Gaga and Snow Patrol did well.
Nicola [Visitor] //July 14 2009 at 21:38
4th and best T! it is what u make of it!
Ian [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 00:39
This was my 14th TITP, and I can tell you the lack of organisation is par for the course. You would think after 16 years they would figure out how to run the thing better, but no. Ultimately I still had a good weekend, but every year come away shaking my head at the idiotic organisation and the news ways they come up with to screw up. It only survives because the crowd are always determined the make the best of it, and are probably the most up for it of any UK festival. But TITP could be turned into the best festival around if only someone who has a clue took it over from Ellis, because the problems clearly come from the top and not from the staff on the ground who are generally pretty good, if a bit jobsworth.
John [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 02:39
I thought it was absolutely brilliant. Pendulum were the highlight of the weekend, and The Killers were just stunning. Calvin Harris was a surprise as well, I'm Not Alone had the whole crowd going. Can't be arsed with all the people moaning about the organisation - it's a goddamn festival! Just get pissed.
The Gutless Wonder [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 09:08
Didn't actually go but watched the clips of the Manics performance and it looked amazing!
AlexRB [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 10:18
My weekend was a 10/10, absolutely brilliant. I saw Florence & The Machine, The Virgins, The Noisettes, VV Brown, Broken Records, Lily Allen, Passion Pit. All memorable performances, roll on 2010!
sally [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 10:43
i thought it was amazing and all you moaners are prob too old for it now - get a grip and relax! Highlights for me Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Florance and the Machine, hate to say it but gaga was good, tv on the radio, say a bit of bloc party and Blur were amazing
jackie 25 [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 17:59
does any1 know who won the fancy dress comp
Stew [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 18:36
Didn't manage to T in the Park but highlights looked brilliant best music for me was when Keane came on great set tom chaplin always seems to put all his energy into the music but thats just my opinion but the rest of the Festival looked great the crowd seemed to be really getting into the sounds and gave the singers and groups a great reception throughout the weekend .
james26 [Visitor] //July 15 2009 at 19:34
me and my mates had one of the best T festivals for years!! Kings of Leon were amazing! Highlight of the weekend, you obviously don't know good music when you hear it!! moaners like mindy and the rest shouldn't be at festivals......... if all you gonna do is complain
Itsumo [Visitor] //July 16 2009 at 01:11
T followed by The Boss at Hampden.. Pure T in the Perked oot ma nut ma man! The View were awesome.
Jimmy [Visitor] //July 16 2009 at 11:40
Saw Glasvegas for the first time. They were dreadful. Apart from that had a good time.
danielle [Visitor] //July 16 2009 at 12:55
thot it was a great weekend. the killers and lady gaga defo made up for other acts not being so good. kings of leon were disapointing tho.
Helena [Visitor] //July 16 2009 at 17:33
The Killers were definitely the best, a really dynamic performance, and what a frontman.
CurlyVik [Visitor] //July 17 2009 at 14:38
Well this was my 10th TITP & I had a wicked weekend as always - but think that was more to do with me n my camping buddies making the most of it as we do every year! Altho I'm a staunch defender of TITP - I have to say I was disappointed in the line-up this year. Most of the headliners were the same as TITP 2007 - there's just no variation anymore. TITP needs 2 shake things up a bit. For the first time in years I haven't bought EarlyBird tickets for next years festival... am waitin to see if T step it up a notch n get a gr8 line-up before I shell out another £180!
Peter [Visitor] //July 17 2009 at 22:29
Well.... Hipparade(T-Break) were amazing As were Go:audio, you me at six,the courteeners, the killers and Tommy Reilly(T-Break)
Jack [Visitor] //July 18 2009 at 18:57
The line up was great, Paulo Nutini and Elbow were superb. But I can't hack to toilet situation, the food and the rubbish. In the end its a corporate rip off.
Kate [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 15:40
1st T experience ever, but mann i would do it again. Fair enough the planning was crap, but I didnt go with an iron schedule and i expected i would have missed things i wanted to see, so all in all i had a belter of a weekend, and i'd go back for sure!!
francisco [Visitor] //July 23 2009 at 14:33
Foals were amazing
Arran [Visitor] //July 24 2009 at 03:14
Great weekend, although was gutted about missing out on the horrors. I felt that there wasnt much on on Sunday until Pete Doherty, apart from Seasick steve in the morning. Manics were superb, as were Friendly Fires, The Specials and The Law. Blur were by far the best band of the weekend, even though they had us fearing Snow Patrol would be headlining the festival.
t time [Visitor] //July 24 2009 at 14:53
there are reasons why you dont see certain bands on tv...the bands sometimes dont let the bbc film them or require approvals before broadcasting can happen. the KOL only allowed a small amount of tracks and nearly didnt allow any filming that isn why they werent on tv. it was their choice
rfmh1 [Visitor] //July 26 2009 at 12:19
The Killers were outstanding and obviously most people got the chance to see a brilliant performance but Glasvegas almost burst the tent with a performance that will live with me forever-amazing!
Brian [Visitor] //July 27 2009 at 03:09
First time there...and I seem to have went to see folk ot a lot of people did, thought Idlewild, Penduljum and You Me At 6 were the class of it this year...and please, no more Lily Allen or Lady Gaga, then again Allen's backking band did a decent cover of Day n Nite
Jess [Visitor] //July 27 2009 at 13:12
T is an AWFUL festival. Full of chavs - never seen so many tracksuits in all my life or men and women just pissing everywhere. And did they clean up the rubbish at all that weekend? We had to wade through rubbish to get anywhere. Chav twats threw bottles of water at all the decent bands. Bad food. Bestival, Glasto and Big Chill beat T in Park hands down. Scotland should be ashamed. Rockness is way cooler
