NME Festivals Blog 2009 - Festival action, all year round - Festival action, all year round

It never rains but it pours. Well, it didn’t rain at all actually. But yesterday (July 17), on the second day of Benicassim 2009, a massive fire burnt our festival walkway to a crisp. Then the wind got ridiculously chaotic, blasting sand into every conceivable orifice and making walking in a straight line so tough it looked like every festival-goer was communally failing a road-side drunken-ness test.

Unsurprisingly, the Kings Of Leon hot-footed it back to their hotel before you could say “Limousine”. The Horrors had even less chance of playing – the second stage was cordoned off by a line of sinister looking guards with miles of tape, making the stage resemble the location of a recent murder.

Sometimes you’ve just got to know when to call it quits. And so the announcement was duly made – the place was shutting down and the Kings wouldn’t be leaving the comfort of their Jacuzzis until the room service champers ran out and Caleb’s muscular arm couldn’t quite reach the phone without a quick step out of the bubbles.

A write-off night for many, not least many fans who, in full-on refugee style, were bussed to a leisure centre to bed down after the campsites were evacuated, namely by men in luminous yellow vests whacking on the sides of the tents until the sand-blasted inhabitants woke up.

BUT arriving on site today, despite the fact that our path now looks considerably more… crispy than it did this time yesterday, you wouldn’t know what had gone down. Hey, the line-up has even improved – Lily’s dropped out and Maximo, who had their set cut last night, are stepping in at the 9:30pm slot.

Franz have just sound-checked (there’s nothing like hearing half of ‘Ulysses’ ten times in a row to wake you up) and the first litre-glass, five-Euro beers are on their way. Which means it’s still a damn site better than V Festival already.

Personaly I don't think kings of leon are really a loss to the festival.
nd [Visitor] //July 19 2009 at 10:04
@girl, I agree. I used to be a fan but have grown bored of them. All I see now is a sentimental MOR rock band.
jack [Visitor] //July 19 2009 at 14:06
it's alright if you missed KOL mate, cos they're headlining EVERY FESTIVAL EVER, FOREVER!!! So sick of that band, gutted for people on site tho, got mates there who can't be enjoying themselves hugely. Also, no need for the Lily bashing
glasto_tom [Visitor] //July 19 2009 at 15:10
Nothin' wrong with V Festival. Another NME scenester snob.
[Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 10:50
I like nme but it pisses me off when people slag off v festival just because is supposedly not cool. self riotous, pretentious, stuck up, scenster dicks.
joe [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 10:50
u lot are so predicatable with kings of leon. I prefer the old stuff but it doesn't mean I have to abandon them. get over yourselves
katana [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 12:36
Benicassim just keeps dissapointing! last years weak line up and this years pants weather
Mark [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 13:09
I hear fighting broke out in the crowd? Interested, as have kept away from roudy Brit events, since moving to Spain, but was considering this one.
Jimmy [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 14:12
Benicassim was class! Oasis as per were the nuts! Weller was really gettin the place going before KOL pussied out!
HERBERT LOMM [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 14:30
KOL - were a great band, now MOR, so pulling out saved a lot of people getting bored Sh**less.. they've found their U2 chord progression, and it'll be used for the next 15 years...YAWN !!!!

dan [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 16:33
people whinging about kol being popular... aww diddums
Jane N. Ireland [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 16:43
When bands get popular they get slagged off. In the case of Kings of Leon I think they will shock people with their next album & alot of you will have to eat your words. You are Fickle.
J [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 16:51
Just got back from the festival and it sucked for all those who loss their belongings in the wind and recieved no help from the organisers.
girl [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 18:34
Benicassim was brilliant, everyone is complaining but what are people meant to do about the weather!! Its something that cant be helped, I had to sleep in a car all festival and it was still a great 4 days!!
J. [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 18:55
I was at the camp site and wasn't evacuateed...five hours stuck in a tent with 3 other people...it was like being in a hurricane and too scary to get out due to all the things flying around..Nobody from the organization bothered to find out if we were there..instead they just left us mercy to earth wind and fire
YYEEAAAAH BOOOOOYY!! aka Shifty [Visitor] //July 20 2009 at 18:57
The weather was disappointing but on the plus side, it blew the covers down from the showers......lethal!!!!
Geoff [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 10:58
yeah the weather ruined the camsite, but the atmosphere was still electric, the organisers did well to salvage anything after the friday night the whole area was like a bomb site, the main stage didnt even have a full roof, Franz rocked the shop saturday night tho.
FIBER [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 12:13
I was in Benicassim and I think NME is focusing too much on the weather conditions on Friday to discredit the festival and they dont say anything about the great time people spent the rest of the days. The weather and the fire is not the fault of the organisers. By the way, the fire took place outside the concerts site and separated by a road so it didnt damage the cam site.. It is true that they werent prepared for that and the situation in the camping area was a chaos. For me the festival was amazing, Franz, Oasis (even with the sound problems) and The killers were awesome.
Emear [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 13:32
Bummer about the weather. Hope no one was hurt
Stu [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 13:41
People don't hate the kings cos their popular they hate the popular music. if arctic monkeys started making music like spandau ballet i'd hate them too so fuck off calling us 'self riotous, pretentious, stuck up, scenster dicks'. SHIT MUSIC IS SHIT MUSIC WHOEVER MAKES IT. Peace out.
Claire [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 15:32
Was campFIB evacuated? I had to stay in my tent so it didn't blow away! My first beni adventure and it was pretty feckin' awesome, despite KOL pulling out, I still saw plenty of amazing bands.
boy [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 16:10
best 4 days ever!
Barry [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 16:12
I was in the hurricane in my tent and was not evacuated, just an incredible experience in a tent in a hurricane, the festiva rocked, Oasis rocked but the killers where justifiably the headliners, roll on benni 2010

Great festival. Wind was very exciting. Gutted to miss KOL, but festivals aren't only about the music....
Ste [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 17:21
J you're exactly rite, no official came to check on us lot further up the hill or tell us what to do- we just sat in our tents drinking, playing cards and praying we'd still be there in the morning- we didnt know what else to do?! still it all made for an incredible experience, and as ever we all had a fantastic time. the crowd and atmosphere for oasis was awesome, same for elbow and 2manyDJs made me forget all about the previous night!
@bofthebrian [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 18:48
Sad that no-one is giving any credit to Tom Tom Club for putting on a great performance when no-one else was prepared to brave the weather.
albert ross [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 19:04
when will you all realize that Kings of Leon suck?
chilly [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 19:12
i've been to beni before - two years ago and it was amazing. This time the organisers cared less about the festival goers and more about the money, they oversold the venue, gave no help to anyone, and the festival turned out to be a coplete farce. FiberFib should be ashamed, we missed many great bands and had an awful week and FiberFib didnt care one bit. We had to deal with chavs on MDMA fighting in the campsite, posh Daddy's girls going to far and not being able to handle their drugs and a complete lack of organisation. If only they were as good at organising a festival as they were taking our money (And that comes from a VIP wristband holder.)

Whats this about campsite evacuation? No one told us! I now know how it feels to be a resident of New Orleans!

Beni B Goode [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 23:26
Just got back from Beni. What a great festival! The only downer is lots of moany Brits bitching about each other - you just couldn't keep your mouths shut could you?!
em.x. [Visitor] //July 21 2009 at 23:44
I never had to evacuate the campsite either. Who were this lucky ppl that got to stay in shetler while the rest of us were trying to keep our tents to the ground?
Home now [Visitor] //July 22 2009 at 02:15
Long live the Spanish vodka free pour and the beautiful bar staff who kept forgetting to take tickets.

Better than V!!!! are you serious. V is the best of the festivals I have been to. I was at Bencassim this year. What a load of CRAP!!! Sound was crap, organisation was CRAP, wind was CRAP, the expensive beer was CRAP, the expensive food was CRAP, The Kings of Leon were CRAP, Lily Allen is CRAP and still was CRAP, the whole festival was CRAP and I will not be attending again ever, Bring on V!!!!
Bonet [Visitor] //July 22 2009 at 11:59
Kol was a disappointment - but a blip on what was a fucking awesome week. A tad laddish this year but still a great week - also, the beer was 7,50 - a fucking rip-off ... Lidl all the way!
L [Visitor] //July 22 2009 at 16:13
It was a shambles. No one knew what to do apart from get out of the site when the wind got really bad - no info from staff at all and they just left people to wander into town to sleep in a variety of doorways till morning. A ridiculous amount of bands not playing and lineups changing. I think the festival has outgrown the site and its capabilities. The campsites were far too overcrowded.
