Isaac Hayes, who died yesterday, is one of the most sampled artists of all time.
Here are just a few of the tracks that owe Hayes a debt…
Portishead – Glory Box
Lifted the lugubrious descending bass line from Hayes' 'Ike's Rap II' - as did Tricky's 'Hell Is Round The Corner' a year later.
Dr Dre – Stranded On Death Row
Sampled 'Do Your Thing', from the 1971 'Shaft' soundtrack.
Wu Tang Clan – I Can't Go To Sleep
In addition to sampling his brooding version of 'Walk On By', Method Man and co persuaded Hayes to contribute a guest rap to the track too.
Public Enemy – Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos
Based around a high-pitched piano sample from 'Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic', from Hayes' album 1969 'Hot Buttered Soul'.
Young MC - Know How
The Wimbledon-born rapper, better known for his 1989 track 'Bust A Move', sampled the bass line from 'Shaft' to great effect on this track.
